The only thing the Mini 3 does is make the Mini 2 a much better deal. Usually I only suggest buying an older model over a current model if you're looking to save money and don't need the latest specs, but in this case, I can't think of any reason why it makes more sense to buy a Mini 3 over a Mini 2. I really like Touch ID, but it's not worth an extra $100.

It also makes those who already have a Mini 2 not at all interested in upgrading.

All the mini 2 owners be happy because it's such a minor upgrade you don't need spend money on a new one. :)

It's an obvious waste of money to upgrade a tablet every year. I'm finally retiring my launch day iPad 2 for a mini 2. I've had 3 ½ years (or more precisely 3 years 7 months and 7 days = 40c per day) value out of the 2 and it runs the current version of iOS.

Why would you buy a new one every year? The upgrades aren't that significant (perhaps the only one being the addition of a retina display).

even if it was a major upgrade, it doesnt make sense to me to upgrade from model to model (it's a kind of modern hysteria, money wasting/trashing)

my ipad 3 is still running smoothly

i will get an Air (3,4,5) when the Ipad 3 will get broken (now in the hands of wife and little son)
-i dont use it because when i did i noticed i prefer a lighter 7'' tablet-

Did you really expect apple to put a chip with 3 billion transistors and shove it in a mini? It probably doesn't have the TDP headroom anyway!

A7 is thermally constrained in the mini 2 already. The chip has more transistors than a six core Xeon and Intel gets $400 each per chip on an older, cheaper and more mature process. Apple is not magic

The mini is going to die in a year or two. The air 2 is now even closer in weight to the mini. Also with a convergence of desktop and mobile operating systems, the mini won't cut it due to small screen size.

Yosemite is the setup. Looks like iOS 7/8 and will kick off some sort of convergence in the next 1-2 years.

And to all the nay sayers , spare us he whole Apple said they'd never merge the two OSs. They also said they would never do a small iPad or an iPod with video.

I respectfully disagree with the suggestion that the mini will go away, and in a year or two is even harder to believe. Yes the new Air may be closer in weight than ever before but the choice to go mini is not exclusively due to how light it is. I for one was an avid iPad user until the first mini and I havnt looked back since (mini, mini 2). The portability has me hooked and that's all because of its size.

Duh the small size is why people want the mini. The convergence you speak of is more than a year or two away. It will be a while before a tablet can replace an actual computer.

No, it's not worth it and nobody should get it out of spite of Apple completely ignoring their Mini userbase.

Yeah, sure, if I had a gen 1 Mini I'd probably vouch for the 3 due to Touch ID, but aside from that... there's not a chance I'd upgrade.

I was really lenient about wanting to upgrade this year. In fact, I would have even if they just barely upgraded the specs. I was hoping for a thinner form and lighter frame, but the fact they didn't even put it on the same chip as the Air tells me that they're not viewing the Mini in the same category, which differs from how last year seemed to work with the Mini.

This is tremendously insulting to all Mini users.

How is that insulting? Unless you pre-ordered it before they announced it (which is impossible), they owe you nothing. Unless they ditch support, or take away features from the previous Minis... there really isn't much you can argue.

You get more than you got for the same price last year, so it's a good deal if you don't already have a Mini and want one.

BUT... I don't think anyone will buy one over the 2 unless they have lots of spare cash.

These devices have a short life cycle, we expect they'll drop the price about every year, so the mini2 was expected to drop in price. We also expect to get more every cycle.

Consider: what did Air buyers get:
-better screen
-thinner
-wifi
-touchid
-faster chip
-barometer...

what did mini buyers get:
-gold color option
-touchid

It's not enough that we get more for the $399, we always (almost always) get more for the same price (sometimes they up the price).

Computers devalue pretty fast, even tablets and the mini has been mishandled from the start.

Mini 1: late with a poor display
Mini 2: late (compared to Nexus) never went on sale at retailers whereas full size did.
Mini 3: everything is outdated. TouchID is not new... everything about the mini3 is OLD NEWS.

Only good news is the mini2 (if it goes on sale this XMas season) will be a good deal.

Target offered about $70 or so gift card + some $20 off retail ... ONLY on the full size, never on the mini2.

I really hope Apple will be introducing a Mini4 this spring and it'll be a FULL upgrade to at least where the Air2 is (at least).

Everyone pass on the mini3, let Apple know it's a dud.

$100 more for Touch ID and gold option?

The thing killing the mini is the iPhone 6+. An iPad pro that integrated ios and OS X would be the best of all. Then they could get rid of the MacBook Air as well. The many Windows tablets like the Surface Pro will force Apple to do the same whether they like it or not, just as the prevalence of larger Android phones in the market forced Apple to make The iPhone larger despite all that talk years ago about never making a phone where your thumb could not reach all the way across.

I know personally that since getting my iPhone 6+ I'm much less inclined to reach for my iPad mini 2 than I used to except when using apps whose iPad version is still a lot nicer than the phone version, as in the app I'm using to write this..Tapatalk. The app makers need to make more apps on the 6+ work like the iPad version rather than the iPhone versions of the past.

Apple introduces iPad mini 3 that sucks.....people flock to the cheaper iPad mini 2 as a great deal = Apple makes billions. #marketing

Just looks like Apple is turning into another Samsung. How many different Ipads do you really need? How many Iphones do you really need for sale at one time. This whole thing is turning into a mess.

Most manufacturers of phones and tablets, Android, Windows, or otherwise have a variety of models of varying sizes and capabilities. It is not out of line for Apple to do the same.

In the Apple Refurb store, why is there always so many AT&T refurbs but hardly ever any Verizon, the used iPads air and mini's are always AT&T.

I just bought a refurb 64GB AT&T rMini for $449. I would have preferred the Verizon one but I plan on using it on AT&T / T-Mobile anyhow.

I'm wondering if Sprint will now let me use it on the Sprint network since the new iPad supports Sprint without having to buy a Sprint one.
