I can't wait for the unknown super phone either it is going to be the best thing in the whole world, unless it's not....

Because a new form factor, in and of itself, doesn't necessarily mean all that much (to me).

Of course, that's entirely subjective.

But let's say the form factor changes, and everything else remains the same - same display, same RAM, same camera...would the new phone be a significant upgrade to you?

Or would maybe the tipping point be if the home button goes away?

There's several ways this could go.

Sure, some people are like you and they tend to be on the "S" cycle. However, others get extremely envious of new form factors, and they're more likely to be on the non-S cycle. Not a good idea to make a general statement like "People will be..." especially given that we didn't really get a new form factor this year.

I personally can't wait for the leaks to start happening. OLED, glass housing again and all new design. It's quite clear to me the reason the 7 did not get a full on redesign is because of 10 years approaching.

Anyone want to speculate what it will be like?

  1. Apple is not even going to mention that it's a "10 year Anniversary" iPhone.
  2. It will have maybe 2-3 new features tops because:
  • Every hardware feature costs Apple money (The 7+ this year was $20 more because they added 1 additional camera to it).
  • Apple has a specific profit margin to maintain. In order to maintain that profit margin Apple has to either increase the price of the iPhone further or stick to their 2-3 new feature plan.
  • Apple needs to keep selling iPhones. It will hold off on introducing too many features in 1 phone

Expect a Ceramic case and maybe 1-2 other features.

it can still go either way. if rumors this early were always true, we would already have an OLED display with sapphire glass ;)

i'll be fine either way, since i just bought the 7.

but a new design might get me to upgrade next year.

Ceramic case ? maybe a ceramic back for wireless charging or just the section were the logo is but a full ceramic case ? I smell trouble..

Theres a few android phones with ceramic back so maybe we can check how they fare.

I hope you guys are just as excited as waiting because with the 7 release is going I'm expecting pre-order shipments to be delayed until Jan 2018.

Been thinking along these same lines myself.

The expectation has already been set for next year's phone to be something special. But Super Phone? Insanely Great?

Nope

Bookmark this guy's post. There's much truth in Point 2

it is a very, very different Apple Today than it was 10 years ago.

Exactly, it's going to be another incremental upgrade. A lot of people expecting a completely revolutionary iPhone next year will be disappointed.

It will be "The best iPhone we ever created" again (obviously :) )

Probably will be new ceramic case, OLED display, wireless charging, A11 chip, better camera, more battery life (another hour or so) and other smaller stuff.

Maybe they'll even get rid of the volume + power buttons and silent switch in the new design and integrate them into a wrap around OLED screen with haptic feedback.

When rumors suggested that the iPhone 7 would retain the same form factor as the 6 series, people called BS and insisted that it'll be a different form factor because it's a non-S update. Look what we got.

I guess they don't learn.

It will not be the same and expect it to be released in June...that is the time iPhones used to come out. OLED, increased resolution, no home button, and all glass. Can't wait!

People are finally waking up to the fact the Apple is making revenue focused decisions. Function is not even secondary.

As long as you guys keep supporting this by waiting for hours in front of your local Apple store on launch day, that's the way it'll be. Would you invest cash into development for a product that already sells out the moment you put it on the shelves? Neither would I...

'The best iPhone we ever created' is the minimum performance expected from Apple each year.

It's like an Elite Olympic athelete at the games looking over their shoulder at the competition, and then giving only what is necessary to win.

Maybe we'll see more diversity in the range next year...

I reckon we'll see a 7S and 7S+ perhaps even joined by a 4" 7S mini to replace the 5SE but these won't be the main event, if Apple do acknowledge the anniversary then I think we'll see a new model line iPhone Pro or iPhone Air to differentiate the new model and to give an excuse as to why only 20% of the range gets the new features.

Think about it, I know people think that the 7 is too much like the 6/6S but there has still been a huge amount of R&D and investment to only use that design for one year (let's ignore the 5C for a moment). To not make the most of it and not do a 7S seems daft, no, it won't be a killer S model by comparison to previous years but I'd still expect A11 chip, maybe 3GB in the regular and perhaps 4GB in the plus. Perhaps small battery improvements and reconfigured home button to match the 'new' flagship's buttonless design. The mediocre bump in spec will be rewarded with lower price points as these models take the place of the 5SE and 6S in the range though will hang around for two years without update until the 'new' models get bumped down.

I completely agree minus the buttonless design. I think the new home button is here to stay for a bit. We will see.
