How confident are we of a MacPro coming this month at all? I have a really big issue. I got this error in my "Disk Utility."

This drive has reported a fatal hardware error to Disk Utility.

If the drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a working drive.

And I see lots of red text. Is my computer dying? Should I just buy a MacPro now?

I had the same exact problem a month ago with my Mac Pro.
The hard drive was failing.I replaced it and all is well.

oh and.

The date is Dec. 11th not the 10th.

So it's not really a smart idea to accept a NIB PowerMac 2.66GHZ as payment for services since a new one is right around the corner?

Can we assume that whatever the new PowerMac lineup is, the lowest end will be more powerful than the current 2.66GHZ config and cheaper as well?

well considering apple does not make a powermac now, why would they reintroduce them? did they ever make a powermac 2.66?

i'm just giving u crap. but the powermac name is not used since the switch to intel. personally, i would accept it, and start enjoying.

wow.. how'd this thread reach over a hundred.. ?!
You guys have nothing better to do ? ;)

I have a new theory on these newbie thread starters..
They're actually aware of exactly when the pro will be released, people
within the know.
And they come in here for fun, screwing with everyone with false rumors.

All I have is a 10 gig and that will not suffice. lol I don't want to put any more money into this G4... Who said 11th now?

Spend the $ get a new drive. It's not like your G4 is going to turn into a boat anchor once your MP shows up.

I am not sure about the drives for the G4 but I just got a new 750GB drive for media files in my G5 that I can then move into the new MB when it shows up. But even if that doesn't work, I will still be using the G5 on a regular basis.

There may be a low end (BTO downgrade) 8 core option using slower processors. It may outperform the current base model on some things, but not on others.

How confident are you the MPs will move to 8 core as standard? That'd be sweet. Currently a, what, £960 excess over the Quad 3GHz? Crazy!

Considering a Quad-core Xeon is no more expensive than a Dual-core Xeon at the same speed, it would be a no brainer but you never know.

If I click my heels together 3 times, will I get my Mac Pro. I've been waiting for over a year for an upgrade and/or price cut. This has to be the longest "no price cut, no upgrade" period for any active product in Apple's history.

I think it is also

I have to agree, they normally don't go more than 8 months without upgrading the specs on the workstation machines. We will be almost double that by the time we reach MWSF. They either have something massive - improvements and not more weight - or they just don't care about it.

In the next 26 days I can't see Apple managing to make this "The year of the Mac" as we were promised before.

Did I mishear or did Steve Jobs say that one of the main reasons for switching to Intel was to improve the speed of progression?

With component prices having plumeted more than ever before to charge people the same price 14 months after release is a little on the cheeky side.

The local reseller near me is offering to install a 2GB stick at £77 (installation and V.A.T) and it's Kingston RAM.

Apple really have no excuse.

In your position I would go buy a firewire or usb2 drive or something. If you don't have the ports you can buy a super cheepo pci card, I got one at walmart for like $20. Use the drive to back up your stuff and then when you get the new MacPro when it FINALLY comes out (I heard some time around when hell freezes over from my source :p ) You can swap the drive over. If you get a big enough drive you can use it as your time machine backup drive.

Just some thoughts. I have been scrounging cheepo parts on my old G4 dp 800 trying to keep it running until the next machines myself.

As much power as the Mac Pro has, I wonder how much more power does a person need. Or how much more power can be offered. If a Mac Pro is needed now, I wonder why anyone would wait for Jan 15 unless they are hoping for a price reduction.

Because faster = better ;-)

Anyway, nothing wrong with an 8 way 16 GB Mac Pro,.... Can't wait to order mine..... whenever Steve decides to bring out the new ones.... on the 11th? :p

If a business budgetted for a Mac Pro then they would buy one. True businesses don't wait on updates to buy their PCs. Businesses buy what's out there.

On what plane is that? Last time I checked, every business (CFO, CTO, CIO or whatever other Cxx) will look at the best possible investment. If this means that they need something now, they'll purchase now,... but believe me, if they feel they get a better deal (read eg twice the performance for the same price), they'll wait.

Oh and euh, it's an urban legend that if you don't spend your budget, you lose it. It happens in government cycles but rarely in the private sector.

Just my 2cents

according to the last rumors, the keynote in january will be the most probable date for the announcement of the new Mac Pros. They say that Apple wants to optimize OS X for the penryn architecture (SSE4)

December 11th seems to be a very unlikely announcement date...

hmmm.... 100 for a new hard drive or 5k  for a new computer with old parts?

Stay Strong!;)

Well I have a 80, 200 and 500 external, and believe me, I backed up my stuff as soon as I saw the message. So maybe I will ride the machine til it blows. lol I just need to edit projects.

Just go to the Apple Store on-line and start picking upgrade items and you can jump the price up to 15K very quickly.

I just came back from the Apple store with a Mac Pro for $2200 with the option of two 2.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors. 4 GB memory will be purchased at OWC. This computer is way more powerful than I need, but I will not buy an iMac.

Actually, I think these newbie thread starters are PC users who are having fun pulling gullible Mac users chains.
