just wondering, what other cats names are out there?

10.0 Cheetah
10.1 Puma
10.2 Jaguar
10.3 Panther
10.4 Tiger
10.5 Leopard
10.6 Snow Leopard
10.7 Lion
10.8 ???

Cougar? Wildcat sounds a bit lame, Mountain Lion?

Well the way Apple first announced/mentioned Lion few years ago in the keynote as a preview of the next OS, I think they mentioned that the lion was the biggest cat and there was nothing bigger. If you want to look deep into that, it wouldn't make sense to name the next OS as another cat. Each version of OS X starting from cheetah, the next version was followed by a bigger cat meaning the newest OS was better than it's predecessor.

Lion being the last, I personally think this is the end of the line for OSX.

I think biggest in this case means "king of the jungle".

This. But I'm thinking, why is Leopard after Tiger? I know nothing trumps the lion in the jungle but is leopard really above the tiger in the "hierarchy"? I guess it's less of physical size, instead it's more to do with the status surrounding the cat itself.

I think since the OS size is decreasing and now we are seeing more iOS features drift into our beloved Macs, they should go with OS X Ocelot.

People who don't like the iOS drift would be happy to see the next one with more evidence of that drift get a name like Polecat, or Civet.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

To those who are saying Mountain Lion: they already released Puma, and puma, mountain lion, and cougar are the same cat (felis concolor if I remember correctly).

Liger?

I'm willing to bet it's going to be Liger.

"It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed... bred for its skills in magic."

Come on Steve-O!

A very vague theory.

Leopards and Snow Leopards are closely related.
While a Lion is not closely related to a Mountain Lion aka PUMA or cougar.

I read about them recently and surprisingly the snow leopard is most closely related to the tiger! But that's not to discount what you are saying--leopards and snow leopards are still closer than lions and mountain lions.

The successor to Lion will be.....

Simba, the Lion King. :p

Hey it could happen, Steve IS a Disney guy lol.

Cougar? Siberian Tiger? Clouded leopard should have been this one with the release of icloud, and lion the following one. They should move on to another type of animal, birds maybe or something

I don't think they'll use the name "Cougar" simply because of its alternate meaning in certain situations.

Then again, they did come out with the "iPad". So I guess a name like "Cougar" is fair game.
