so which will be the next Big Cat?

Lion should be the final chapter. Lion and Tiger are THE cat names.

Cheetah, Jaguar, Puma, Panther, Leopard have all been used and TBO "Lynx" or "Liger" or "Cougar" sound.. well... eh... less. :(

Who knows during summer WWDC 2013.... Mac OS X being evolved into a desktop based multi-user, multi-threaded iOS?
Huge amounts of iOS developers getting their apps over to the new Mac iOS. All the Mac OS X developers getting an easy "port" of their apps to the new Mac iOS: huge amounts of gr8 apps and games for Mac iOS!!

Maybe even drop "Mac" in the OS name:
iOS for iPad
iOS for iPhone
iOS for iPod
iOS for Mac
 
OSX-PussyCat?

I mean, come on, who wants a little cat? They could go through all the different types, RussianBlue, Calico, Persian, Siamese, etc..

"Oh, and one more thing...it repairs disk permissions by its self while it is taking a crap in your toilet. It's insanely great"

Wait....that's true. Why DOESN'T OSX repair disk permissions automatically by now???
 
I think 10.7.x Lion is defo the last we'll see of OSX.

I think OS 11 should be named after vegetables.

11.0 - Sprout
11.1 - Carrot
11.2 - Turnip
11.3 - Alfalfa
11.4 - Cauliflower
11.5 - Potato
11.6 - Sweet Potato (Just a more streamlined version)
11.7 - Ratatouille

But it's a good point - they're going to run out of cats at some point, and it's hard to see them reverting to giving each major release a dull 10.8 / 11.0 etc. name.

In which case, they probably will pick a brand new lexical field for OSXI, but what could it be?

Big cats are conceptually great because they represent power and elegance really well, and are universally recognised. What could match this?

  • Birds? (as suggested above)
  • Planets? (Mercury, Venus, Mars...)
  • Badass and/or elegant animals in general? (Shark, Giraffe, Fox...)
  • Domestic cat breeds (to represent how accessible/easy its become - Calico, Savannah, Sphynx...)
  • Astronomical phenomena (Nebula, Galaxy, Quasar - they do love it in the desktop pics)

Except Ratatouille is not a vegetable, it's a dish and a movie . . . a lousy movie at that.

11.0 - Falcon
11.1 - Hawk
11.2 - Owl
11.3 - Snowy Owl
11.4 - Eagle
11.5 - Golden Eagle
11.6 - Bald Eagle
 
I think we will have Lion for a while, then a "Mountain Lion" upgrade in a couple of years max - Mountain Lion will last a year or so, after that, there will be no OSX or OSXI, there will be one OS across all Macs and portable Apple devices (notice I omit "iOS", seeing as that will be replaced with this new OS, too, of course). This is the way of a "Post-PC era" and meshes well with Apple's "it just works" and "simplicity" mantras. Just how I see it.
