Apple will have to make a new OS for the iPad to make it standout from the iPhone. I would call it iOSX. Something that mixes a lot of the Mac OS and iOS together. Something that can have true multitasking, file management, multiple users, and iOS apps. It can be done and this would completely set the iPad mini to the "Pro" apart from the iPhone.

Then if it includes a Wacom pen (a must!) in all the iPads and magnetic latch for keyboards like the Surface on the "Pro" iPad version, then it would become a trully separate product from the iPhone. Imagine the new apps taking advantage of the pen!? It be amazing. iOS has the best app developers and they would make some amazing new apps to take advantage of the pen. Note taking would completely replace notebooks and pens! Imagine being able to actually just take the iPad to school?! This would be huge! Drawing and Photoshop on the iPad would be in another level. A more robust iOSX would make it even better in the workplace with file management and integrated keyboard. In other words Apple has to make big changes on the iPads for the better.

iOS for phones, iOSX for iPads, and OSX for Macs. Would be three separate products all working in sync with each other.

iOS and iOSX would be run with ARM processors and Macs with Intel. I can bet Apple engineers can make this happen and be a lot lighter than a Surface tablet.

This is my dream scenario with Apple ecosystem.

First of all, it would be called an iPad Pro.

It's more likely to have an A9X.

On a side note, hope the vibration thing with the iPad Air 3 is fixed b/c I gave up getting an iPad Air 2 from Best Buy because of that problem.

Without some change to the OS, I am having a hard time seeing why you would want such a big iPad unless you have a very serious vision problem. Just making things larger on the screen makes no sense for your average user. In fact, IMO the iPad Air screen is too large for my everyday use for most apps. That is why I have a Mini. Now if they were to introduce a major IOS change that would allow split screen's or app windowing that would change things completely. I really can't see this thing being much of a hit without some changes like this.

Thank you, I wanted to say the same thing myself, but I don't have to...

I agree. The sad part of it all is that the added screen space wouldn't yield us anything other than an added row of icons, or as the iPhone 6+ has shown, a blown up and pixelated UX.

I know the Devs will have to play catch up, but I'm crossing my fingers for a real workhorse tablet, one that may even trump the Surface Pro 3 which runs a full OS.

The iPad Pro won't run OS X, but it'd be nice to see some real advancements on the iOS side in terms of functionality.

Did you seriously just compare a Surface Pro to an iPad? Man, those commercials are really getting to some of you aren't they? :p

In actual use they're confusing as hell and they're double the weight of an iPad. They're poor tablets and poor laptops mashed into one. There's a reason why Windows 8 flopped, and it's not just because Surface Pros are bricks.

Apple will continue to add features to the iPad but they need to keep it simple so mere mortals like my parents can use it. With a detachable keyboard, I can already do 90% of what my Mac/PC does, but without 90% of the complexity.

Give it time. Apple needs to push technology forward, not merge it with old technology simply because that's all people know.

I do think that the split screen feature will be introduced with this larger tablet. But I don't think the device itself will have a limited appeal. Big screen is good for video, and so are those stereo speakers. Business folk may like it, but I think families will like it too (though the current iPad doesn't do a bad job at that)

I'm sure this could be done without a whole other OS. As it already responds differently on an iPad than an iPhone, it must be possible. Also, as you can make iPad only apps, and have an iPad only section of the App Store, it wouldn't create confusion.

I agree though that it would be nice to have proper distinctions between devices other than screen size. Tim Cook has said a couple of times that we're in the "first innings" of tablet history, so it would be nice to see a grand vision of what the future might bring.

If iPhone replaces things like a PDA, camera, iPod, etc then an iPad could be seen to replace a pen & paper notebook. Thin, light, great to take to a meeting, do some document editing, tweak a photo, take some notes, etc.

Heck, even if the vision was just "A Mac tablet" but using iOS then that would be great. More PhotoBooth like iOS apps... Xcode for iPad, Final Cut Pro for iPad, etc.

This whole giant iPad thing seems rather pointless to me. At such size I'd rather just get a Macbook Air 11' and have a full OS X experience with a keyboard.

I get your drift,IMHO, the 11" is Apple's best laptop,so wish it had a touch screen, while not for you, the iPad Pro with a NEW Logitech back lit Keyboard, would be a boon to Physicians, Surgeons,Painters, and Photographers, as well as me, for no particular reason

I envision a Pro model of the iPad moving into this space.. I think Apple could really polish this device up and make it a "must have" for a lot of home and professional users and I could see this replacing the Mac Mini as well. Don't flame - just read the reviews available.

and do what?

without a stylus what exactly would professionals do on a ipad? they cant even install office suites or have a dedicated file system.

ipad pro makes zero sense continuing with iOS.

giving users full blown osx does.

I agree. But it's unlikely that Apple would just release a "large print" version of the iPad, so I think it's a given there will be adjustments to the OS. Also the battery will be larger, and there will be more pixels on the screen.

If Apple is indeed working on a larger iPad, it certainly won't be like the larger house that Steve Martin built for his family at the end of The Jerk (identical to the old unpainted shack in every detail, but larger--including oversized rockers on the front porch that dwarfed the family and doorknobs that were above eye level on the giant doors.

It's silly to be concerned that Apple would do something like that. When the iPad was released, iOS was enhanced to allow apps to do more with the extra real estate. Even the iPhone 6+ has more split panel displays (within apps) that aren't available or practical on the smaller iPhone 6.

Completely Agree!

At some point we are going to end up with a 15" screen tablet. Wouldn't that be great? Imagine having the power of a laptop... in a laptop size tablet!?!?!? Can't wait for that future and to ditch my MBPr for an iPad Plus Plus tablet.

<sarcasm off>

Hahahaha, I am literally crying here :)

For christ's sake Apple, forget about this nonsense and just give us a retina MacBook Air, or an improved MacBook Air with a bigger screen/smaller bezel. The whole iPad thing is overrated anyway, I'll take my MBA 11'' any day over my iPad Air.

I think it's funny how a lot of people here talk about Apple is all well known for being the company that provides products people didn't know they want until Apple made it. Then you'll immediately turn around and talk about how something is useless, and Apple won't make it because "people don't care about that".
Apple doesn't make people do things they didn't want to do before, it just makes it easier to do them. Lot's of people listen to music, most people use email, most people use a web browser, a significant portion of society is play or has played computer games or games in general. People have used maps for navigation for centuries and most people use them at least from time to time. And I could go on.

However, very few people actually like to draw or paint or do pixel-level work in Photoshop.

Come one Apple, release a MacBook Air AND a larger iPad. That will make everyone happy, except those who don't want me to have a larger iPad, and their feelings aren't important anyway.

I'd buy it.

Remember when "real work" was only done on "desktop workstations"? The idea that anyone could do "real work" on a laptop would get you laughed off the IRC.

The future is coming, no matter how much we protest.

What you're basically saying is "people don't like making stuff". Hell, Apple was built on people making stuff.

Think Different.

No kidding. At the moment it's basically just getting different sizes of the same three things which can get stale. Be nice if they expand a bit however Apples way of thinking for awhile is huge profit and devices that everyone wants which leaves out a lot of possible cool ideas for devices or features.

I do think a lot more people would start using (and demanding!) decent active pens if Apple included it in their tablets.

Including decent pen support in a mainstream consumer tablet would increase the demand for pen support in other tablets by orders of magnitude.

There are literally hundreds of tablet models out there... but only a handful have stylus/digitizer support (Surface Pro, a couple of Samsung tablets, maybe others)

But... if Apple decides to do it... the entire industry will respond?

Seems legit... :D

What you're basically saying is "people don't like making stuff". Hell, Apple was built on people making stuff.

No, I said the vast majority of people don't like drawing or painting or doing some aspects of graphic design. Yes, loyal users in that category was what kept the company afloat in the nineties but look at the Mac's PC market share at the end of the nineties when maybe half of its sales went into the creative sector. That is the portion of the population that is addressable for such tasks. And you still have to subtract most photographers (those that do little to no pixel-level work) and people creating layouts. If the creative sector was maybe 50% of Mac sales in 1999, it down now to 10% and in terms of iPad sales 5% or lower.

A lot of people like making stuff, but for very few that is drawing or painting. You'll get a much larger share with people taking photographs, doing any kind of mechanical workbench type of objects, almost anything that is now considered a craft.

They've got so much money now, they could start futzing around with whatever idea pops in their head, and not have to worry about whether it makes money or not.

All I know is I want more powerful tablets. The iPad gave us a taste of the future. The SP3 has gave us a sampling. Now I want the smorgasbord!

I hate the "vast majority" argument. It's used to justify so much, without thinking about what it really means.

...which in this case would mean "Apple makes the best products designed for the lowest common denominator". That's not to say that their current lineup is terrible, but if they were to ignore the creative niches to chase the vast majority, do you really want to support the company that'll eventually end up being known as those people who make overpriced facebook machines for grandmas?
