The launch of a new high-end 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a Mini-LED display may be "delayed" until early 2021 due to the device's "complex panel design," analyst Jeff Pu said today in an investor note with Chinese research firm GF Securities.

Back in December, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple was developing up to six Mini-LED products, including a 12.9-inch iPad Pro with an A14X chip for release in the third quarter of 2020. This was before the global health crisis began, however, so it would be understandable if the timeframe has been pushed back due to supply chain disruptions and Apple engineers being forced to work from home until at least early May.

Last month, leaker Jon Prosser said a new 5G-enabled iPad Pro with an A14X chip and no other hardware changes would be introduced in late 2020, barring any delays. If that proves accurate, it would seem really soon for Apple to update the iPad Pro yet again with a Mini-LED display in early 2021, so rumors are not entirely lining up right now.

Apple just refreshed the iPad Pro last month, but it was a relatively minor update, with new features including an A12Z Bionic chip that has since been found to be an A12X chip with an extra GPU core enabled, an Ultra Wide camera that enables 0.5x zoom, a LiDAR Scanner for enhanced augmented reality, and better sounding microphones. It was the first update to the iPad Pro since the device received a major redesign in October 2018.

Pu also reiterated that Apple is currently on track to release three new iPhone 12 models in September, including one 5.4-inch model and two 6.1-inch models, followed by the highest-end 6.7-inch model in October.

I won’t complain if they don’t release a mini-led version of the 12.9” iPad Pro this year, as it will keep me from wanting to upgrade my 2018 version. I’ve got zero interest in 5G at this point, and although I’m sure an A14X chip will be a real boost in processor speed, my A12X isn’t really showing signs that it can’t do what I need it to.

I’m not sure I’ll keep it as long as I’ve been using my early 2013 iMac (21.5”) or early 2013 rMBP 15” (maxed out version), both of which continue to perform without issue - my wife uses the rMBP for her work currently. But I can definitely see keeping the 12.9” iPad Pro for 4-5 years before upgrading, especially if the new Magic Keyboard case is as good as I think it will be.

I hope they at least put 8gb ram ffs. It will be 2021 and still 6gb ram when more pro apps are coming.

As someone who has just purchased the 2020 IPP (mainly to go from 11 inch to 12.9 and 256gb to 512gb), I'd still be looking to buy the next version as soon as it comes out. But to push it out to next year will definitely feel like I'm getting better value from the 2020.

This iPad will come out in about 16 months, just as the iPad Pro release cycle dictates. You‘ve read it here first ;)

It would be really odd for two different updates coming out. Obviously I have no information one way or the other, but I'm going to guess that the model with Micro LED and 14X chip and 5G are all the same model. At least I hope so. That's the version that will tempt me to update from my current model.

Honestly the prices are insane for having to buy every 3 years the whole lineup new. I would expect a cheap upgrade plan.

with luck you can get good bucks for your old device, but with apples inferior built quality the last years, it’s harder and harder. If you are not lucky your 3 year old device is worth 100 bucks, and you paid around 100.

this would probably be the iPad Pro Max to coexist together with the just released iPad Pro. This way, they do not have to lower the price of the current one. its the strategy they have been doing for years now. Release something "more Pro" with a higher price point so you do not have to lower the price on something already released instead of the new product just succeeding the existing one for the same price

I am very confused that they only talk about 12.9 iPad to get the new screen. There is already a laptop announced with mini led. Cannot imagine 11 pro to be left out from the mini led development. 2020 iPP is an extremely small update. A “real update” needed with A14X at least soon.

I hope they at least put 8gb ram ffs. It will be 2021 and still 6gb ram when more pro apps are coming.

Apple is so efficient it only needs half the DRAM of competing products.

In wide release yes.. I still think they'll announce with preorders (limited) by the end of the year. This is what they do.. virus or not.
