And how much would the mini-led iPad be when it is finally released? Like $3000 for the baseline model and all the way up to $4000 for the flagship model? Judging for the huge difference between laptops with IPS and OLED models, $4000 is not out of realm of possibility.

Officially the 2018 iPad Pro 1 TB 6GB LTE version may have been one of the best iPad investments ever. I don’t feel like I’m missing a thing. Will wait for the mini LED, I just want a new screen technology and will upgrade when that occurs.

They've done it before with iPads. Let us not forget the infamous year of 2012 when both the iPad 3 and 4 were released. I bought the iPad 3 and I will never forget. :)

Umm, first of all iPad 3 and 4, both released in 2012. Second, why do you think they say "Early 2020" and "Late 2020" when they release products? :)
I definitely remember the iPad 4 replacing the underwhelming and underperforming iPad 3 shortly after its introduction. That piece of crap iPad 3 should never have been released.

That situation, thankfully, is not analogous in any way to the 2020 iPad Pro.

Hmm this years “refresh” was pretty underwhelming- much more underwhelming then I expected and I was not expecting much lol - this is the true iPad refresh and I was hoping it would be sooner than later

This rumor has never made any mention of the 11", or has it? Simultaneous release or staggered.
It hasn’t as far as I can recall. The release last month was exactly on-cycle, which would put the 5th gen on a schedule for mid 2021 (and 6th gen for late 2022).

With all the rumors of a 12.9” earlier than next summer, it could very well be a staggered release. So the 12.9” coming early, but the 11” on-cycle in July-ish.

But maybe they both come a year from now, and the 11” just hasn’t been mentioned yet. Who can know? 🤷‍♂️

If there would have been an A13X instead of the A12Z, would it have no longer been underwhelming? There really would have been very little difference between the really, really fast A12X/Z and the really, really, really fast A13X.

People have missed the forest for the trees. Last month was the big release. According to some rumors, the next gen is just a bump to A14X. Nothing else. All the good stuff was in the release last month.

The rumors have also said that the A14X-based iPad Pro would have a three camera array along with the LiDAR. It makes absolute sense that Apple would push this release to 2021, either March or June. My money is on June. I also expect Apple is working on a larger than 12.9” iPad Pro that is going to start at $1299-$1499. Something between 15”-16” is very plausible. Everyone holding off should be prepared to pack it in for a long wait.
I’d love for you to be right

The last release only got a LiDAR camera & 2GB bump in RAM though

Well, a little more than that. Here’s my list:
  • A12Z; Just a small GPU upgrade; meh, but sure why not...
  • better thermals, according to Apple; has anyone done sustained performance testing? Geekbench is too short to be useful
  • 64—>128GB base storage, so price decreases at all capacities
  • 4GB—>6GB RAM on the most common models by far (128/256/512GB)
  • single—>dual camera
  • new LiDAR scanner
  • more (five) and higher-quality microphones
  • WiFi 6; must be a big deal because some claim Mac not having it is a dealbreaker lol
Compare that list to the possibility of just a bump to A14X. Which will have been the better gen-to-gen upgrade? I’m suggesting it’s last month’s 3rd to 4th—not next year’s 4th to 5th SoC bump.

Of course the 5th gen will probably have a few more features thrown besides the A14X, in all likelihood. So mini-LED display (some rumors say yes, others no); maybe 8GB (at least in the 1TB model); of course 5G for those who buy cellular; U1 chip; maybe a smaller all around bezel with the new, lower profile notch module (6-7mm instead of 9mm); and some other new goodies to entice us lol.

We’ll just have to wait and see what makes it into the 5th gen, and what ends up in the 6th gen in late 2022 (assuming normal refresh cycles).

I always saw the lack of 11” being mentioned as a sign that this could be something different to the usual ‘iPad pro’ with potential for there to be a 12.9” and something bigger 🤷‍♂️

Wouldn't be the first time an iPad product line started with just the 12.9” 😬

One thing I wonder about, for the next iPad Pro (or any iPad for that matter) with 5G cellular, is how will Apple deal with the power demands the 5G chips have? My Pro 12.9” isn’t exactly power efficient as it stands now, so they’re going to need to find some efficiencies in other areas. The updated A14X chip will save some, and perhaps this is the reason for going to miniLED in order to save on the other big battery draw.

Glad i got the 2020 one, previous one was an ipad 2, huge upgrade! wanted a 2018 but it’s like a car... never buy a redesign on year 1

A13x or 14x would have been a much more solid move - one extra gpu with no noticeable increase is not great - now don’t think I’m hating on it - the iPad is the best tablet by far on the market - just in 2 years it would have been nice to have a bigger jump than an old tweaked chip.

My iPad Pro already has 6gb ram so no big deal

Yes there were camera improvements (oddly not the 3 rumoured and they have no features like night mode which is odd)
Front camera was not improved from what I know

Lidar scanner we knew of , lack of u1 is weird
Prices stayed the same - only difference is if you wanted to spend the least amount you now get more storage

What I expected was not a mini led, or even a a14x

But it should have at minimum launched with what it did, plus a third camera, a better front camera, night mode, U1 chip, and a minimum of a13x or a13z
That’s not expecting anything crazy that’s simply just current tech apple has

I currently have the 11” 2018 iPad Pro and really wanted to get the 12.9”, but the latest 2020 model just isn’t enough of an upgrade for me. I hope this is one rumor that turns out to be false, and we do get the upgraded 12.9” by end of year.

I understand that they did this before. I did not anticipate they would do it again. And it looks like they aren't.

The update interval for the iPad Pro has been ~18 months since its inception.

We shall see!

Basically re-using an older processor in a brand new product update seems more like a delayed 2019 release more than a 2020 re-release. It would be just like Apple to surprise us and update before end of year.

However, you're right in one respect, in that the Coronavirus situation may throw a crimp into those plans, thus delaying to Spring 2021.
