i dont think in any MACS Apple will put anything but Intel ,because of the desktop Yosemite app requirements. But i can see a year from the release of the 12" rMBA, the others 11 and 13" will be dropped. So from late 2015 we will have ultra thin 12" MBA and 13&15" MBP.

So you want worse performance especially when asking the GPU to push ~4x number of pixels with a Retina Display? I'm not sure you understand what you are asking for.
So the internals being fried is a better alternative?
It appears to work fine for the iPad with a Retina display. Most likely the new MBA won't come with anything but a ULV chip, or similar.

This seems like apples answer to the chromebook. My guess is it runs ios and apple will try to price it cheap, around $599.

Think about apples recent push for productivity and iCloud support. A device running off of arm and 16gb memory makes perfect sense. It'll be touch screen and runs ios so no need for a right click.

It'll be called the ipad pro

What? If Apple makes any traditional laptop touch screen, I'll stop believing they know what they're doing. Touch screen laptops and even desktops in their current iteration make little to no sense from a user experience point of view.

When you have to move your hands from the x plane in front of you (keyboard) to the y plane (screen), it's not a comfortable position to hold your arm at as your arm and hand are unsupported. Just the movement required itself slows productivity in working, as you have to stop typing and raise your hand or hands to go to the screen to do some move that could have been accomplished faster with a gesture based trackpad, as Apple has been offering for years.

Beyond that, who in the right minds wants fingerprints all over their laptop or desktop screen? I get it that with a phone or tablet, it's easy enough to wipe clean as needed, but when you go bigger in laptop or desktop form, the ability to quickly clean becomes more problematic. I hate it when my kids point to something on their laptop screen, touching the screen and leaving fingerprints everywhere. There just is not a good reason to interact with any computer this way.

That's strange. Mavericks added new power saving features which *should* mean your MBA runs cooler, not hotter. My old 2010 13" gets noticeably better battery life on Mavericks than it did with Mountain Lion, and the fan hardly ever comes on.

Fan is always on. You can't hear it but it works. If it wasn't working, your macbook would heat up instantly.

Anyone else but me wanting a cheaper plastic MBA available in a number of colours?

O.k. maybe it's just me then!

Do miss those fun days. But at least we're in the cool days. Nothing comes close to the coolness of today's Macs in terms of industrial design. Can't wait to see what's next...

What could be so dramatically different between the 2011 and 2013 MacBook Airs? I have the 2013 and never hear the fan no matter what I do with the machine.

My 2011 Air (13") spins up the fan doing just about anything. The big difference between the '11 and '13 Airs are in their processor's energy efficiency and the heat they create. In my office environment, it doesn't really bother me, but when I'm working at home, late at night, it's definitely noticeable. My early '13 iMac 21", with Fusion Drive and 8gb of ram is silent all the time - I've never heard the fan on that thing, regardless of what I do.

Forget plastic, they should keep using aluminum and simply offer it with different colors, just as they have with the iPhone, iPad and iPod. Anodizing can be done in a myriad of colors. I'm guessing Apple has tried this already - they probably have a room filled with different colored anodized MacBooks that didn't make the cut, because the color could be distracting in laptop form, or maybe it just looks cheap.

That may be true, but it's completely silent. No noticable fan noise even in a completely silent room, unless doing something which causes it to spin up (like run a gfx-intensive game).

Quite different to my SSD iMac where there is audible fan noise even when the machine is idle.

Please no fan. Ever since I updated to Mavericks my 2011 MBA sounds like a fighter jet.

I still use my older 2011 MBA for various things and especially for travelling. The only time I can hear the fan is when I am watching a lengthy video on YouTube.

I did however do a clean install of Mavericks. I'd never ever do an upgrade. Macs don't seem to cope with upgrades very well as they carry across all sorts of junk from the previous OS install.

you will know this bad boy is underpowered if its CPU specs are hardly mentioned at the show and they harp on about the fan less size and weight

MacBook Airs don't need to perform like Mac Pros. Good battery life and cool running are much more important.

off the topic maybe but: I receive today my MB Air 13 inch today $945
what a bad! decision I made... without retina this thing is so ugly, I feel that I have a toy... I compare this with my sister macbook pro 13 retina and the weight difference with the Air is not too much... more light weigth but not as I was think... so for $280! more I could have a macbook 13 with retina and more speed :(

It still amazes me that people are going for the 13" MBA when the 13" rMBP is a vastly superior machine for a small amount of extra money. In fact, if you buy from Amazon here in the UK, the 13" rMBP often works out cheaper than the MBA!

I hope apple makes it a standard 256gd SSD and possibly 8gb ram :)

Dream on!

The weight and battery life of the Air, for many people, is the reason they choose the Air and not the Pro. Real world use shows little difference between the two machines, as far as what I've noticed with our 15" rMBP and 13" Air. It's only apparent in doing graphics intense work. But for building spreadsheets, docs, emails, especially when traveling, the Air is all the computer lots of people could want or need.

So is this the much Ballyhooed ARM based Mac? The first in line to displace Intel out of the Appleverse??

Somehow it still seems unlikely, but this is the change (with an outside chance of happening) that could really shake things up.

Your point was valid 2 years ago, but not now. For a tiny amount of extra money you get a machine with that stunning retina display, much more power and more CTO options. The 13" rMBP also has a smaller footprint and only weighs a fraction less.

I do understand your point, but for me it's not really a valid argument when the diffence in size and weight is so negligible.

If you look at the broad market, you'll see people with a budget where $200+/- does make a difference. And others where an extra ~3 hours run time is the biggest deciding factor. And if you're like me and have to carry tons of product samples (or school books or whatever) that already weigh more than you want to carry, saving a few grams of weight on the computer is saving a few grams.

The weight issue has become such a big factor for me, the last trip I took I left the MBA and brought the iPad, even though it's not great for what I need it for. At least the battery lasts forever and it weighs even less than the MBA, let alone the 15" rMBP.

A macbook Air can't be a primary computer, its only for someone who travels a lot. But a 15" macbook pro can be. For some costumers with limited space or for those who make a few travels the 15" replace the imac
