I really do believe, that Apple chooses this high prices on purpose. This happened with the iPad Pro, the Retina iMac and the Macbook (and years ago with the Original Macbook Air) to prevent the non-Apple-geeks to purchase it by mistake. This leads to higher costumer Satisfaction. The original Macbook Air had no DVD Drive (Steve Ballmer complained about this), the Retina iMac had (in the first months) no sharp content zu show (even some Websites were fuzzy), the iPad Pro has no real Pro-Apps and the Macbook (which I think is the future of the broad consumer Laptops; not for prosumer) has only one USB Port, which is fine, if you think of it as a iPad with a Keyboard and OSX (and bad if you compare it to a MBP or MBA).

Just in case you missed it... (video of the year last year)

Apple Engineer talking about the Retina Macbook:

Funny because it's mostly true. It's as if Apple is taking features away and raising prices to see if we all will actually pay and buy this crap. 2012 was the last year Apple got any money from me, the original rMBP 15". It's still a fine piece of hardware and I'll be using it until it's dead.

I'm not sure where or how you're seeing the slow down. I've owned the 1.2/512 model since the moment it was available and I have never noticed this sluggishness you discuss and I typically have 3-4 apps open at a time and sometimes Parallels running Windows 10. I am always amazed at how well this runs and how genuinely quick it feels doing most things. And I had a MacBook Pro 13 retina before.
Only real negative: I can say that I don't think I've ever really gotten 9-10 hours - more like 6-8 depending on what I'm doing. But it charges fast and the only USB-C dongle I use regularly is a USB-C to Ethernet one I found on Amazon to program routers and such. All in all a very nice laptop. If I didn't already own one, I'd jump a this price!

then there's always "this guy"..."oh no, mine doesnt do that, mine is super ridiculously awesome!"

It's a measely 1.2 GHz Core M processor....its going to be sluggish. stop with the nonsense already.

A couple of points. One, i'm sure best buy will match b&h on the sale price, and you can pay it off over a year, and 2, a big discount like this suggests the rmb has not sold well, and that there is big inventory sitting around. Screwed will now be those trying to sell their used rmbs. But it could be a buyers market for a used one. With new at 999, i wouldnt pay more than $700 used on ebay or cl.

How does that even begin to make sense?
Because early adopters paid full price, and its apple thats authorizing the low sales prices, and i'll bet the version 2 will start at 999, not 1299, and have lots of updates. Thats how it begins to make sense, brother.

Airs get discounted all the time - they sell very well. Maybe just clearing out for updates.

Stop trying to make this overpriced unpowered thing happen and give us the Macbook Pro's.
Nothing worse than tech snobs. Just because this machine isn't for you doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to exist. And last time I checked MacBook Pro's still existed...

If you're on the fence about picking one up, I'd pull the trigger before the deal is gone, because the sale price is better than the refurbished price at Apple's website. Unless, you're willing to wait and Intel sky lake is worth $300.
If one is on the fence you should definitely wait. The improvements are going to be worth it. If you can't wait get a 13" mba it's my current recommendation for my friends and what I did last year w my mba 2015

The price discounts aren't horribly bad, although I think it's still over priced. It's a beautiful looking low powered laptop with a gorgeous screen and no ports. Call it what it is.

I'm not quite sure why you think this is the case, but Apple doesn't control the price to the consumer. That's entirely up to the retailer. It simply depends on how much profit they want to make. B&H, Best Buy, etc. are Apple's customer in that instance. Apple makes it's money when the product ships to the retailer, not our hands.

Early adopters don't get screwed. They make a choice to purchase an item knowing there will be an update with more features. They can choose to wait or decide the current offering fits their needs. Always has been, always will be. The 2nd gen MB will have more features than the 1st, the 3rd more than the 2nd, and the 4th more than the third.

Apple Engineer talking about the Retina Macbook:

Oh my goodness that is hilarious. I laughed almost as hard as the "Apple engineer" in the video. Thanks for sharing.

I won't be laughing nearly as hard though, if Apple tries to sell us on a dongle for the new 2016 MBPs. Not. At. All. :)

My friend has one and I was a little shocked at how sluggish it felt with a few apps open and trying to open more. Lag on the app icon bouncing in the dock and navigating the OS just felt like I was beating the crap out of the machine.

Maybe I'm just used to ease of my quad-core iMac or something was up with my friend's machine, but I was disappointed. Looks great though. V2 should be good.

Yea the M processor is a step up from an iPad so I'm surprised that's the only processor option they put in the MacBook. It's small, light, and has retina which makes it nice but the moment you need any power pass typing a paper you may as well get an Air or Pro.

Nice laptop though for the avid traveler who is not a power user.

Would've much rather preferred a BOGO on Type C to go along with the discount.

While I agree on most except the price point. This needs to be priced $200 more than a mba. They can't cannibalize sales from their different versions of laptops.
IMHO: They will bring it down to $1199 and add one port more plus better processor. Easy fixes and similar to what happened with the mba after processors finally catched up w slim designs like the Mba. Then 2-3 years from now the mba and MacBook will be one. Leaving the pros as the other choices.

I don't like the keyboard, typing on it feels weird, the travel is too short, maybe over long use I would get use to it. Happy with my Early 2015 MBP 13.
