That's what we plan on doing. I want to get that shipping back and try and buy something else a lot more worthwhile. I'd buy a PC, but I already have tonnes of those and quite frankly, I'm bored of the old PCs. I want some old Macintoshes.

Gooddeal-888 on eBay

The user is actually selling some very nice HP laptops, 12" 1024x768 displays so they're the same size as the 12" PowerBook G4. Only except these are supposedly Intel Core 2 Duo machines and support up to 4GB of RAM. Too bad my experience with this seller will prevent me from purchasing said laptops.

I do not know how it works with eBay in Canada so I would check if the dispute process is the same as the US.

The issues first presented themselves as soon as I powered it on for the first time. It was the first thing that I noticed. They didn't appear after a couple days or so. If the claim doesn't go through I will simply resell it on eBay for parts or not working, for about $40 and have the buyer cover the rest for shipping.

Good idea. I think your claim will get resolved.

To get an idea of what's happening I have some images here:

Someone may need a hammie... :D

Someone may need a hammie... :D

No hammies needed here. The last died out in 2010 and its duties were rolled into DeathRaker's duties. DeathRaker, I didn't name it, is an old tray loading G4 Xserve that just won't freaking die.

Someone on eBay may want a hammie and this PowerBook would be the perfect contender if the claim gets denied.

My friend wants to try swapping the logic boards between my PowerBook G4 and his iBook which he no longer uses. I don't know if his is 12" or 14" and he doesn't know either.

Assuming his iBook is 12", would the logic board in that laptop fit in my PowerBook?

Square peg, round hole. Ford engine in GM car. Black ink on black paper. Somethings just don't work.

He won't believe me when I tell him, or he'll still insist on trying. Can you explain why it won't fit? Sorry to bother you with something like that.

Type into Google Images "iBook G4 Logic Board" and "PowerBook G4 12 inch logic board" and you will see. Completely different designs. Even if you fit it in the case (which it may) the mounting would be completely off.

One of these does not look like the other.

iBook<->PowerBook.

If you put the iBook next to the Powerbook, you can easily see that although the screen is about the same size, the iBook case is noticeably larger, the I/O port configuration is different, the internal connections to virtually all devices/display/power are not similar, nor in the same locations, etc. etc...

"square peg in a round hole" is an apt description.

But, if one wants to try, be sure to get lots of duct tape and superglue... :D

Impossible is the better answer.

What I noticed about this PowerBook is that it really only seems to work when it has warmed up a bit. This might take a bit to do, rebooting it or trying to get it running enough to get it substantially warmed up. Because it sits in my basement, it's going to take a while for it to warm up. Once it has warmed up internally, it seems to work fine. The problems don't disappear immediately as it gets warmer. They slowly go away, then once they appear minimal, when the screen changes (especially to something more graphical) they go away completely.

Does anyone know of any proper hardware test software (particularly Apple Hardware Test, where can I find it?) for this PowerBook? For those who don't already know, it's an 867MHz PowerBook G4 aluminum, 12".

2.5.4 is the minimum version disk that you can use. 2.5.8 is the latest as far as I know.

Do you know where I could find it? I looked on the Internet, but I didn't find anything.

Links to it are not allowed to be posted and discussion of how to obtain it is not allowed on MacRumors as it falls under the no piracy rule. It was never released for the general public's use and is still under NDA.

Ah, I see now. I didn't realize this. Do you know of any other hardware test utility? I have a bunch of free ones, but they're all for Windows and Windows machines, so if they worked with Macintosh systems they'd only work with Intel ones, not PowerPC.

----------

Your local Apple Authorized Service Provider may have the disk. I do not believe Apple Stores will carry it anymore.

You're probably right in that Apple Stores won't likely have the hardware test anymore. The chances of them actually servicing a PowerPC machine now are slim to none. They might try and figure out a problem, but if it is a hardware issue I highly doubt they'd actually fix it. And even if they did, it'd cost me a lot of money.

Apple Hardware Test was available on your original disks. It is model specific and you can order disks on the worldwide garage sale called eBay. Apple Service Diagnostics was never sold.

Not every Mac's restore discs have AHT. Mostly it's just the newer Intell ones that came with discs. Even then, they don't do much more than simple tests.

I thought the later G5 disks came with it... I am pretty sure I booted to AHT on those disks IIRC but I may be wrong.

It seems to work when it has warmed up, and when it does work, it works quite well.

Either that or it could be complete luck that it is running.

I'll give it a shot.

I think I have a working 867ghz board 12" PB board. There was something on it -- it think it actually was the video cable that I broke and that cable ONLY works on the 867ghz boad. I opened up the machine to fix the cd drive and ended up breaking that cable.

Yours for 20 bucks if you want it. You would need to use your video/display cable on it to work. I also have a 512mb ram chip on that board.
