As a backup.

I'd like to keep all my texts. I'm weird like that. Deciding to delete them all would be a big decision, I guess if I notice it's slowing my phone down I would maybe need to make that choice. I have multiple contacts with thousands of texts each and it doesn't make any different whatsoever.

That's why I loved the Facebook idea of integrating their messaging systems with texts and emails to create a history of your interaction with that person. It's just a shame it's not very slick in reality.

always restore from a backup.. Too many apps and app data to start from the beginning.

I will do a restore and then go through all the phone settings and new apps just to make sure everything is optimized they way i like it. Im OCD obviously.

I'll be setting them up here as a backup from my iPhone and the Wifes iPhone. The son will probably set his up as a new phone

From back for me.

However, I have a question. Will restoring from a backup that's from a previous iOS (not iOS 5) cause any issues?

I doubt it as the phone will already come with iOS 5 in it

Another question will you do it via computer or just set it up on your phone?

Shouldn't cause any issues. I've done it before with no problems.

If i set up as new, am i able to download my previously paid apps for free?

Yes but as already mentioned they should already be in your iTunes.

Regarding myself I'm going to set it up from a backup as I don't want to lose my texts, game saves and other important data. I've always done that with all my iPhones.

Fresh install for me.

Hate losing my old SMS and it's a major pain having to re-select/install all my apps and sort everything back into folders, but as I had to do a fresh re-install about 3 months ago when my iPhone 4 went a bit haywire, the prospect is easier to face than it was back then when I had 2.5 years of SMS to lose.

The reason I'll do it is that if (ok, when) my 4S crashes, I don't want that thought in the back of my mind that it might just be due to some old glitch I've just re-introduced from a previous backup.

Fresh Install.
The important things like contacts, calendar and mail are in iCloud, so when I connect my iPhone with my iCloud account I will have them.

Am i wrong in thinking that once the iOS5 is released (10/12/2011) and installed on the older iphone, all the data in apps (progress in games, etc), will be backed up to the iCloud. So, even if i do a clean install on my 4S, wont i be able to pull all the apps with their data back from the iCloud onto the new device?

I thought the whole purpose of iCloud and backing up your phone in iTunes was so that you didn't have to start from scratch. I will be updating my phone on the 12th with IOS5. When I get the new phone I think we can set it up from the phone and not in iTunes.

Remember: Those of you doing an upgrade swap with your phone carriers, make sure you call them or go into the store before activating and setting up your new 4S.
