Cool Thread

I will set it up as a new phone. At first, I thought that I will restore my data, but I've decided against it. I will load apps as needed to the new phone.

me personally I have never found problems restoring from back-up..

I restored from back-up after moving from my 3G to the 4...don 't see how it will cause any problems to be honest.

I'll restore from back up except for my apps. I always manage to mess that part of the restore up (don't ask, I'm illiterate) so as long as I manage to do my usual messing up of restoring my phone, I should have all my contacts/text messages/photos along with an absolute fresh home screen. Happened to me with the 4.

I'm using 3.1.3 and most of my apps are not compatible with my version of the OS. But I here ya!

I will manually load my apps, but syncing contacts would be cool. We'll see!

EDIT: I ended up restoring from a backup without a hiccup. Who knew?

I've already removed the pics from my iPhone. I'll update to iOS 5 when it is available, and then restore from backup on my new iPhone. Same goes for my wife's iPhone, though I still have to transfer off her 2K photos. Uggg.

Just to confirm, there is absolutely nothing wrong with restoring the 4S to an iOS 4.x backup (whatever version is on my 3G, I can't remember) and then downloading iOS 5 and updating? :)

My iPhone 4 was jailbroken so if I were to restore my new 4s from this backup, would it cause any issues?

I'd PREFER to restore from my backup simply because I had a TON of pics and apps, but if it's going to cause issues then I certainly won't. :(

FYI, when you restore from backup you are not necessarily restoring to the same OS version. All you are doing is restoring the data portion. So when you get your 4S it will have iOS5 on it and when you do a restore from backup it will still have iOS5 but will transfer the data from your previous iOS. That is one of the reasons I try not to restore from backup during a major revision change (iOS3 to 4, etc). That data is sometime stored a different way in major revisions (what I've been told???) and the re-write of it doesn't always go smoothly.

Just to be clear, is there no way what so ever to save old text messages other than restoring?

I have my old iphone 4 backed up but would prefer to start my new iphone 4s with a clean install

Will calendar also sync?

On Wednesday put iOS 5 on your phone. iCloud will save your contacts and pics. Then when you get the new phone, use iCloud to put those back on. Works great.

Will my calendar also sync to iCloud and then onto my new 4S?

Been backing up/restoring for every upgrade from iPhone 1 through now. I don't see any issue upgrading to 4s.

Set up as new and later backup?

Can I set up my new iPhone 4S as a new phone and then later restore from back up, or some other option, so I can get all my text messages, apps, app data, etc?

If so, how do I do this? My main computer runs Windows XP and can't have the iCloud, but I have a NetBook with iCloud capabilities, but my backup and all the app data, calendar, etc. are not on the NetBook.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you.

If you guys are only using iCloud for the new iPhones, are all the apps organized in folders? How about playlists, wallpaper, ringtones for contacts?

I've always restored from backup before. Current iPhone4 JB at 4.3.3, but seems to be the least stable of all ver JB's. And not sure if it's due to the chain of restores since iP3G.

So, going to restore new this time. Contacts and calendar will sync from iCloud already setup from MBP. Gonna suck to lose texts. Don't care about app settings. Will copy pics off old iP4 and save.

Ive heard many complain about losing texts. I'm trying to figure out what the big deal is in keeping old texts. Can you help me understand?
