I've got a couple of questions about restoring a new phone from a back-up.

1. On the Apple website the instructions given are when staying with the same carrier. I have pre-ordered from a different carrier, can I still restore from back-up when I get my new 4S?

2. If I can then do I just need to adjust the carrier settings?

3. If I can't then is there anyway to transfer over my SMS texts and saved data?

4. Can the restore from back-up be entirely done using iCloud?

Thanks in advance.

What about jailbroken phones? Will iOS 5 be officially aware now if your phone OS jailbroken and can void warranties or notify carriers etc?

I thought the whole purpose of iCloud and backing up your phone in iTunes was so that you didn't have to start from scratch. I will be updating my phone on the 12th with IOS5. When I get the new phone I think we can set it up from the phone and not in iTunes.

Remember: Those of you doing an upgrade swap with your phone carriers, make sure you call them or go into the store before activating and setting up your new 4S.

Why?

I have a 3GS that I want to transfer over to my new 4S that will be on Verizon (I activated an old Blackberry on Verizon in July to lock in the unlimited data plan). I plan on updating the 3GS to iOS5 on the 12th and then doing a restore on the 4S. Will this be possible?

Also, does iCloud back up videos loaded onto phone (eg videos loaded into VLC player).

Why what?

I am not sure if iCloud works with 3rd party apps such as VLC. I have videos on my 3GS and I'm sure those will be transferred to the new 4S when I restore my new phone.

Yes, I am setting it up as a new phone. I still have all my iPhone 4 stuff backed up, but I'll do a fresh start. There's some application and music I need to delete off my iTunes anyway.

I am moving from iPhone 3G to 4s. If I set it up as new phone will I loose all my SMS. I want to do a clean install but want contacts pics and SMS from my old phone. Is there a way to clean install and yet have these specific things fromold phone transferred to the new.

Another question will you do it via computer or just set it up on your phone?

I'm looking forward to the cloud, but until I trust it, I will set it up via iTunes. I imagine there will be a massive crush on the cloud servers the first day so I have no idea how long or how buggy the setup will be.

It is my understanding that the Restore process restores user data/setting. I wouldn't think it would have anything to do with carrier settings.

NEVER... NEVER restore a backup that came from a jailbroken device. Jailbreak apps do all sorts of modifications to the OS that could get "restored" and then wreak havoc on your new on jailbroken device.

Restore for sure (resto' fo' sho).

Same here. I was planning on using iCloud backup, but now I'm not so sure..

Restoring in iOS only copies over app data, preferences and media. This means there are no issues with upgrading like there can be in OS X.

From back for me.

However, I have a question. Will restoring from a backup that's from a previous iOS (not iOS 5) cause any issues?

I doubt there will be any issues. I upgraded to the iOS5 GM and restored from my iOS 4 backup. All is peachy.

I'll be upgrading from an old iPhone 3G to a 4S on Friday, and I'd like to do a fresh install. But this is the first time I've changed iPhones, and I'm not sure how to do it.

I don't want all the crap from such an old phone going on the new one, so I don't want to connect it to iTunes and suddenly see everything being put on the new phone.

How do I make it a completely fresh install? All help appreciated!

You'll be asked if you want to restore from backup. Say no, then manually set up your e-mail accounts, sync your media, install your apps, etc.

The only thing I'd really like to keep are my contacts, text messages past, photos.....hmm yeah that's about it. Anyway to do that? Is there anyway to start new and just sync those things?

Since I'm finally upgrading from 16 to 32 gb I'll probably be setting up a new phone. I'll be able to sync soooo many more apps it'll be amazing!

I always start out fresh every time I get a brand new phone. Otherwise it feels like I have old stuff gunking the phone up. I'll manually transfer stuff over that I need.

Sometimes this is true. I believe its what you back up. I don't back up apps in iTunes so i can re-download them all and everything. I just backed up my photos / contacts (and the normal stuff it automatically does like text msgs).

I was on 4.1 JB with greenpois0n and then i upgraded to 4.3.3 and restored from backup. Then i re-JB it on 4.3.3 and its been gravy ever since. Zero issues. Just re-download all my apps from the app store and restored my tweaks from Cydia using the backup app (doesn't backup the JB app to cydia just saves what i had before ... then when i was on 4.3.3 and told it to "restore" it just downloaded all the tweaks again)

I started with a 3GS which was my new phone so I'll just restore from my latest iCloud backup. As people say too many saved games, messages, contacts etc to start from scratch.

I always thought restoring from backup negatively affected battery life. B/c old settings and things got put on a new phone. I'll do a clean install. Contacts, mail, etc will sync through iTunes.

Why would we need to contact our carrier or go into a store before activating?

I haven't seen a basis for this view recently. It may have been true in the past but I don't think it is anymore.

I sold my iPhone yesterday, but backed it up to my computer. I should have waited for iOS5 so that the systems would match for the 4S. But now thinking about it, my phone had a few problems, some software related, and don't want to pass it on to the 4S. So, new phone set-up for me! Good bye game saves!
