I always thought restoring from backup negatively affected battery life. B/c old settings and things got put on a new phone. I'll do a clean install. Contacts, mail, etc will sync through iTunes.

I've never had that problem and I've always started with my most current back at the time.

I always start out fresh every time I get a brand new phone. Otherwise it feels like I have old stuff gunking the phone up. I'll manually transfer stuff over that I need.

If you actually look at what content is in the backup, you'd see this isn't something to be worried about! :)

I wouldn't if I was getting a 4S. Lose my game saves!

You can save your games with tools available out there (at least on the PC, not sure about Mac). I saved my Angry Birds before clean wiping to iOS5gm.

as a backup.

I'd like to keep all my texts. I'm weird like that. Deciding to delete them all would be a big decision, i guess if i notice it's slowing my phone down i would maybe need to make that choice. I have multiple contacts with thousands of texts each and it doesn't make any different whatsoever.

That's why i loved the facebook idea of integrating their messaging systems with texts and emails to create a history of your interaction with that person. It's just a shame it's not very slick in reality.

I've owned a couple of iPod touches, so I have apps already bought from the App Store in my iTunes already. I'll still set mine up as a new phone but with the same Apple ID, hopefully this will allow me to just move my apps over from iTunes to the phone w/o having to repurchase them.

Don't worry, you won't have to repurchase them.

Definitely going to set up as a new phone.

I've been restoring from backup for years, since my original EDGE iPhone. There is definitely stuff that's not working right on my 3GS after all this time...push notifications not getting to me, just a lot of cruft all over the place. I'm looking to start fresh this time.

so there is a way to set up as new phone and get my contacts synced? I am on a PC and have my contacts synced to windows contacts.

I'm going to restore from back-up, just to make things easy. I will be spending quite a bit of time though moving around my apps and such. Some will be deleted, some will be replaced, I'm sure I'll get some new ones, and it'll be a good opportunity to reevaluate my system of organizing them all and what folders I want to have. Then I'll spend the rest of the day talking to Siri and figuring out just how good she really is.

I was going to restore from backup as well, however I have been JB for a while and I think i will start from new....kinda a PITA but i want the 4S to be perfect.

I'm going back and forth about this as well. Probably gonna start as a new phone, as I'll know that nothing weird has came over from my 3GS.

I just upgraded to the GM of iOS 5 on the 3GS, and I'm getting uneasy about upgrading my new 4S from that back up.. just because it was the GM seed, not the "official" released one. I have problems!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

I always set up a new phone as new, people have too many problems restoring from backups when going from one model to another on different versions of iOS.

I was going to set it up as new but I have been running iOS 5 through all the betas and now the GM... and everything is working fine, battery life is good. I don't think there is any reason to set up as new.

Going to set up as new. I like inputting everything :D Great feeling in my opinion. And yes, that includes my 50+ phone numbers lol.

I am most likely going to start over. I wish Apple had a utility to transfer text messages, but meh, whatever.

Anyone using PhoneView - http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/

I saw it advertised as part of an app bundle (can't remember which - but might have been the most recent Macupdate bundle) and thought it was interesting but didn't pull the plug.

I always forget about app data though... maybe this way the phone can be setup as new and app data from a previous backup copied over?

I think the reason to re-install all of your apps vs. do a restore is iOS 5 blocks UDID, but a lot of your apps have tracking codes in them.

By re-installing apps under iOS 5, the apps lose track of your UDID and unless you give them your name, you now have a decent amount of privacy. Apps can only do per-app usage analytics.

I have an obsession with making things seem as fresh and fast as possible, despite my intense dislike of losing messages and game saves. I won't even sync my apps on there as it just "seems" to slow things down. Well that, and putting 300+ on there is a bit insane. I'll slowly install what I want/need one by one.
