iPhone 1 was just iPhone right? makes sense
iPhone 2 was named iPhone 3G... which confused people
iPhone 3 was named iPhone 3GS.. ok not so bad
iPhone 4 was named iPhone 4.. makes sense
iPhone 5 was named iPhone 4s... err not very smart. I mean it's not a huge upgrade to the 4 so I guess you could still consider it there 4... but what are they going to call the next one?

iPhone 5 wouldn't make sense at ALL since it's the 6th iphone and iPhone 6 would make sense but people would be like "what happened to iphone 5?"

I hope the name will be in hieroglyphics so anyone asking for one at a store basically has to do a little dance. Something like "Squiggly Line, Dot, Dash, Eye, Guy walking like an Egyptian, in white and 64GB please"

perhaps just iPhone... when a new macbook air comes out (for example rev c) did they call it macbook air 3 or just the new macbook air?

The pattern says it will be called iPhone 4G, but who really knows anything when it comes to predicting what apples going to do

It would only be called the iPhone 4G if it kept the same form factor... but since they already went with the S and most of us are pretty sure there will be a redesign it'll probably just be iPhone 5.

Why would it be iPhone 5? Technically, it's the not the 5th generation phone, nor would it be their fifth design. If anything, (and assuming a redesign is launched next year) that will be their 4th "new" phone. I would think that if they stick to the numerical suffix, it will just be known as the iPhone 6. I think that if they had no problem skipping over "iPhone 2" they'll ignore the 5 as well. But, who knows...

Personally, though, I'd like to see it drop the suffix and just be known as "iPhone".

"5" is one of those anniversary numbers that are good marketing tools. It'll feel more prestigious as the iPhone 5 as opposed to the iPhone 6 which isn't a number anyone cares about.

And it most likely won't be the 4G because of a redesign. Though 4G isn't outside of the realm of possibilities it would be counter intuitive to call it the iPhone 4G just because it's been called the 4 and the 4S already.

It'll probably be marketed as "The iPhone 5, the first 4G iPhone" or "iPhone 5 LTE"
