I'm aiming for an iPhone 17 Pro to replace my XS. Mainly for two reasons:

1.) iOS 19 will not likely be supported for XS, unless Apple surprises me again like they did this year with iOS 18 being compatible.
2.) 64 GB storage is starting to feel cramped. Have 8-10 GB of storage left. Apps, OS, and system cache ("System Data" is what I think Apple calls it) use up 75% of the storage capacity.

Also, not that I care too much, but Apple Intelligence won't be fully baked until iOS 19. iOS 18.1 will give a taste of what's to come.

13PM had a useful leap:
- Much brighter display + promotion is a treat
- much improved battery (it still lasts almost 2 full days between charges)
- camera is actually decent (before it was just a "phone-camera")
- tele has 3x zoom and is actually useful.

In 14 is a great succesor but not necessarily a massive jump of useful features:
- Dynamic Island + always on display

In 15 could be:
- main camera is 48mp + improvements that can be noticed from 13. Images look better when seen bigger screens.
- tele camera has 5x. This might be more useful than 3x in some cases (but not all)
- USB-C for fast photos and videos transfer
- Reduced weight and screen bezel

14 Pro also got Emergency SOS (LEO satellite connectivity), 2000 bit displays and a 48 MP main camera

I always tell people get the Pro models as they last longer. The regular models get obsolete much faster.
But Apple only sells Pro models for 1 year. They are always removed from Apple's inventory as soon as a new Pro model is introduced. While the baseline (and SE) iPhone models are continued to be sold by Apple for 2 to 3 years. So it is not clear which models get obsolete faster.

Is it finally time to upgrade…12PM STILL running smooth and battery at 88. Bugs should be worked out from 15’s design and material but is it really worth it and if so, why other than just being new model.

I did finally upgrade my iPad Pro 10.5 to the new iPad 11 2024 and really was disappointed as it really wasn’t worth the money for what I use, so this one will be it for long time unless it dies.

16PM or will the 17PM really the upgrade that will be worth it and if so why?

‘It will always be the next one on the horizon. It, too, will be another incremental update.

I mean it’s gonna be a big improvement over the 12 Pro Max but I was still wanting to wait till the 17th, but it is what it is

Sticking with my 12 Pro Max until it dies. Hopefully that will be a couple more years, but if not then I'll deal with it when it happens. Really don't see any reason to upgrade now, it certainly wouldn't be for Apple Intelligence. :)
I'm upgrading for the camera improvements. My wife's 14 Pro Max is better than my 12 Pro Max. The 17 Pro Max's cameras should be even better.

Yeah, my cute cat photos would be even cuter with a 16, better still on a 17! 😺

Seriously, as someone who started developing their own photos in the early 1960's I can appreciate the impressive things Apple has done with computational photography. Still pretty impressed with my 12 Pro Max on those grounds and have no doubt I'd be even more impressed on a new phone.

But that's just not enough to get me to upgrade, especially considering the cost. I'm quite happy to have a phone that's all paid-off and meets my needs. I can find better uses for my money than a phone upgrade. Obviously, that's a personal decision that each of us must make for themselves.

Well, I have a medium format TLR (for which I developed my own B&W film), a 35 mm SLR, and a couple of dSLRs, along with a bunch of different lenses, yet I truly value the iPhone camera quality because that's what I have with me 99.9% of the time. I very infrequently use my dSLR these days. About the only time I use it is for spontaneous portraits outside (for better bokeh) or for high telephoto.

I hear you, my Nikon DSLR died a few years ago and I've been using my 12 ProMax exclusively for photography since then. Meanwhile, a camera bag full of expensive Nikkor lenses gathers dust in the closet. Sort of the same thing there... I don't have a "need" for either a new phone or a new camera, and since I'm retired on a fixed income, I'm more selective about big purchases.

why not sell those lenses? KEH or B&H (assuming you're in the US) might offer you something. and since DSLRs have moved to mirrorless, it's probably unlikely you'll ever use those again ... just a thought

i am also a 12 pro max user, but i would not upgrade my phone to a 16 pro max as the changes are slim to none.

I am choosing to update to a 17 pro max for

- The triple 48mp cameras & 24 mp selfie camera

- The rumoured anti reflective display

- The 12gb of memory

- The slightly refreshed design

- Finally the thermal improvements

Besides these factors the 12 pro max is still a great phone. If my upgrade impulse did not kick in, i would have hanged onto it until 2027 for the xx anniversary iphone & when the phone is no longer supported by apple.
