Your 12pro has 6gb of RAM. The 16Pro is expected to have 8gb of RAM while the 17Pro is expected to have 12gb of RAM.
That is a good jump and to me is important, more so than some of these other features…from these posts I’m now leaning to waiting but with more research or unless of course the 12 goes belly up but it’s seems very good still

I have a 13 pro and could easily wait a year or more to upgrade as battery still 90%. Rumors have it that the 16 will have (much?) improved audio, so I may spring for the 16. Does anyone have any validation on how much improvement can be expected? I am hard of hearing, so audio quality boost would be significant for me.

The only thing attracting me to the new Pro phones is the titanium case.
The 12Pro is an amazing phone, but heavy as a brick.

EDIT: People have pointed out that the 15Pro/PM is basically as heavy as the 12Pro/PM, so my observation above about titanium is pointless. Sadly these phones are super heavy.

You should have upgraded back when iPhone 13 series was introduced and waited for 5 or even 10 years before upgrading... The iPhone 12 series is one of the lowest point in terms of battery life and new technology [5G]...

Battery at 86% now that I look…fine and dandy with no problems …. and no, I would’ve never upgraded to 13 after the 12.

If your 12PM is still running good I would wait for the 17PM. The big rumored advantage the 17PM is supposed to have over the 16PM is more RAM (12gb). That alone might make the 17PM last a lot longer than the 16PM for someone that prefers to keep their phone a long time.
Exactly my thoughts as well. I was never going to upgrade from my 15PM this year anyway, and I'm running AI with 18.1 Dev beta and while it's got some nice-to-have features, so far, it's nothing to spend a lot of money for. If that's the big marketing push for Apple and the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro this year, people will be as impressed as we were with the 5G push...which is to say totally underwhelmed for most areas of the U.S.

What are you all going to do with Apple Intelligence?

It doesn’t seem particularly useful for non-productivity purposes. It is like all the different AI language models in existence, they’re quite impressive but they aren’t (in this present day) going to change my life for better or worse or have an impact on my phone habits.

What’s the game changer for normal iPhone users?

Genuine question.

It’s like Dynamic Island. It’s nice, it’s different. What does it do to improve my quality of life? Don’t know!

Are iPhone 16 users going to utilise Apple Intelligence? The realistic answer to that is no.

It’s a very niche new feature and will likely be as useful as the Touch Bar on the MacBook.

Is it finally time to upgrade…12PM STILL running smooth and battery at 88. Bugs should be worked out from 15’s design and material but is it really worth it and if so, why other than just being new model.

I did finally upgrade my iPad Pro 10.5 to the new iPad 11 2024 and really was disappointed as it really wasn’t worth the money for what I use, so this one will be it for long time unless it dies.

16PM or will the 17PM really the upgrade that will be worth it and if so why?
Well, if you’re not in a hurry… the 17 will always be the better one. In fact, it will be Apple’s ‘best iPhone ever’. 😊

The 16Pro will be a little heavier than your 12Pro since it will have a slightly larger display. Even the 15Pro is basically the same weight as your 12Pro.

12Pro: 6.66 ounces (189 grams)
15Pro: 6.60 ounces (187 grams)
16Pro: 6.84 ounces (194 grams) is what we are being told so far

However, rumors are saying the 17Pro will be going back to aluminum and if true we might finally get a much lighter weight Pro phone.

Personally, I would definitely switch to the 16 if I was no longer happy with my iPhone 12 Pro. But it seems like you are still happy with your current phone. So I would wait for the iPhone 17 because all camera lenses are supposed to get an upgrade and it will get the anti-reflective display like the S 24 Ultra. For me, these two reasons even speak in favor of keeping the phone for longer than the iPhone 12. Because at the end of the day, we all want the best cameras and displays. After that, I don't know what Apple should improve on the display and camera. The bigger innovations will then apply to the iPhone for its 20th anniversary.

PS. Apple Intelligence will be bugless and more polished in the middle of the 16 cycle I guess. When that’s happening the 17 is around the corner ;)

Im the end you decide :)

I find that upgrading each year, and trading in my prior year model (I buy them outright), is the best practice. My coat is usually $400-$500. I prefer this budget hit to a new one once my old has little value. I think $1+ is well worth the annual upgrades.

They are dropping the Titanium that fast? Titanium isn't much heavier if at all over aluminum in the size of content of an iPhone case is it? I will say, I am impressed with how light my dad's 15 Plus is compared to my 15 Pro Max. I thought maybe that was due to the camera module

Early rumors for the 17 series are saying the Pro will be Aluminum but the Pro Max will still be Titanium. Nothing is definite at this point of course. It has been mentioned in articles on this site though. I agree there is a big weight difference still between the 15 Plus and Pro Max, the camera has to add some weight but I wonder how much of the weight difference comes from the camera and how much from the Titanium.

My upgrade plan below and why...

I was planning to upgrade from 13pro to 16pro, mainly as I felt it was slowly starting to show its age in terms of battery degradation but also that the 5G network are much more available now and I want a phone that can utilize that more efficient.

But, after the 17.6 update and a somewhat, what it seems like, improved battery-life. I might keep it for another year. Well see how it goes and how desperate other family members are in need of a "new" device (my 13 pro) :-D

What bugs from the 15's design and materials are you referring to? I'm holding off for the 17, but I had upgraded every year since 2013.

I’m no AI expert, but many of Apple Intelligence’s announced features seem a lot more useful than ChatGPT et al. I don’t really need something to write a book report or draw a picture of a twelve-fingered person for me, but being reminded about emails that mention deadlines without having to manually create reminders, or asking Maps to grab an address from a screenshot received by Messages instead of pulling over to highlight, copy and paste—if that sort of intelligence works as promised, it will usefully reduce the effort and friction in everyday tasks. Heck, Siri being able to work through an “uhh” or a correction is a killer feature by itself!

I agree that there are many little things that Apple AI will make doing things on the phone easier.

I will say though, that I find ChatGPT highly useful. In fact, my entire workflow has changed for the better due to it. But that's very task specific I think. It's also still wrong more often than it should be and users really need to understand that, but it almost feels like moving from a typewriter to a word processor.

I have a 13 Pro Max and I am so ready to upgrade.

Despite battery health stating 90% my phone does, fast. Like half a day. Didn’t used to.
Screen seems harder/dimmer in daylight.
Even on an 80 degree summer day in limited use the phone gets massively hot and the screen dims even more. (Sometimes to nearly black.)

Ready for the new-new.
