The recent stuff does seem to be a bit late. I did use the "usually" caveat, in my defence.

The recent MacBook, The C2D MacBook, The CD MacBook
The C2D MacBook Pro, The CD MacBook Pro
The C2D iMac, The CD iMac
The Speed Bump Intel mini
The Intel mini
THe Octo-core Mac Pro

all recent, all released with availability dates or straight away.

Theres a good reason why all of the machines I highlighted in bold were available immediately.

They are all just simple CPU swaps. The Quad Core Xeon is a drop-in replacement for the Dual Core Xeon, and the Core 2 Duo (Mobile is what Apple uses) is a drop in replacement for the Core Duo, and the Core Duo is the same thing as a Core Solo, just with both cores enabled.

Sorry to hear about your cat. I lost my cat Socks that way. :(

I matter because i'm a customer. And judging by the 1% market share, they don't offer what 99% of other customers want either. I reckon Apple will be out of the computer business within 5 years and only sell gadgets and phones.

I'm not a die-hard Mac fan, in fact I think the iPhoto and iTunes programmes are clumsy, ill thought out and not user-friendly, despite the hype by Apple to the contrary. Their customer service can be dire, but sometimes excellent. Product quality is average for what companies supply these days ... I took back 3 iPods, before realising that they all seemed to have been made with the central bezel out of alignment, my laptop battery doesn't sit flush to base and I was told that's par for the course. So, I think Apple sells itself, but doesn't live up to the lofty claims ... just more moolah for Jobs' to trouser and everything is fine.

However, if you're going to start quoting figures at least make the effort to know what you're talking about and reference your sources. I had no idea of Apple's market share for computers, but the following seem to indicate that you're wrong in saying 1%. In any case, your logic is flawed, market share has nothing to do with the survival of a special product.

http://www.macworld.co.uk/education/news/index.cfm?newsid=16335

Apple is the number two supplier to UK education market, pushing Dell into third place.

http://www.apple.com/uk/pr/250407_q2results.html

Apple shipped 1,517,000 Macintosh computers ... during the quarter, representing 36 percent growth in Macs ... over the year-ago quarter. “The Mac is clearly gaining market share, with sales growing 36 percent — more than three times the industry growth rate”

http://macuser.pcpro.co.uk/macuser/news/104655/vista-to-hit-apple-market-share-analyst.html

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster believes that Apple's share of the computer market will decline from 2.5 per cent in December 2006 to 2.3 per cent in March 2007. However that will not reflect a decline in Mac sales, merely a surge in PC demand. Because of increasing demand for laptops, an area in which Apple is particularly strong, Munster expects the company to increase market share over 2007 as a whole.

So it appears you are at least 100% out with your figure, hope you don't work in accounts :)

Cars like Bentley and Ferrari have negligible car market share, which is fine by me ... you keep driving your Ford

and the others? Major engineering changes. Many of the C2Ds also included new wireless cards. Anyways the issue was settled. Apple tries to announce products with immediate availability.

Thanks for the commiserations. The family is gutted for a third time in 3 years.

Why a Dell here?

I thought this was MacRumors, not Engadget.

With a total lack of Mac hardware rumors for almost the last year, Mac Rumors has to go to other companies products to see what they are making that would be wanted Mac hardware items. After the change to Intel processors, Apple seems to use Intel motherboards modified to have FW800 on several of the models. Most other Apple motherboard items are Intel or other Windows motherboard standard items. So by showing now-Mac products Mac Rumors & other Mac rumor sights hope to come up with what Apple can do in the very least. So far Apple hasn't even been able to match the very least, let alone do a better job.

This lack of Mac computer development has followed Apple change into an electronics trinket company & away from its Apple then Mac computer lines. The iPod & iPhone may look nice & sell a lot of units, but rather than expand the Mac computer line, it takes needed resources away from Mac development to the trinket market.

All I can say tp Dell is go do something new & great for a change. Put Apple back into a technology follower rather than leader. The person that I purchased my first Mac from in 1984 is one of those people that have been Changed to the Windows computer field for all but his banking & other areas of needed security over the internet. He is a member of the Windows group that actually prefers Windows over the Mac OS. Being a 23 year Mac User it hard to believe that such a thing can be true. But why not? Apple is on the surface letting the Mac slide. The not even yet released iPhone has a higher priority than the advancement of the Mac OS. People see this as Apple the former computer company the makes computer assessories now rather than actual computers.

There may be converts to the Mac, but there is also over 2 decade Mac User's that are now giving up on Apple.

To many, computer style means nothing. Their computer is in a place that they do not see so useful ports are more important that what we think of as a cool style. Are these Mac styles really cool or are we just blind followers of Steve Jobs & Apple & anything they make we would buy?

Until Apple does something new & cool & useful, I'll just have to look at those that have not forgot to development computers.

Seems like the good thing about the intel switch: regular updates.
The bad: harder to find stuff to differentiate themselves from the competition.
These boxes more and more becoming just a commodity. Especially if the other guys wise up to good design. Price also becomes easier to compare,
If someone else with a big product range wants to sell a selected product at or below cost, it can impact a competitor with a limited range.

Dell Ultraportable scoop on MBP Update Eve?

very cruel to post this dell-teaser on update eve. Ain't gonna happen.

I think that Apple needs to start having Sony act as the OEM manufacturer of MB/MBP. This way we'll get the latest technology, with Mac OSX and Apple Exterior design. Apple, having moved to Intel platform, will not be able to hit the market with the latest technology on a regular basis, like Sony and Dell. Apple will always be 5-8 months behind, no matter how many manufacturers they contract in China. They simply don't have the resources (yet) to update technology as fast as the competition.

Many of the responses to this thread are embarrassing to read as a Mac user:

"Who cares! It doesn't run OS X!"
"UGLY!"
"It's still runs Windows, so I'm not buying it!"
"It's a Dell....ewwwwww!"

You guys are completely missing the point. The new Dell is not forcing you to buy anything; you are so blind in your fanboyism that you think that a new release of some amazing hardware is a death threat to your way of life as a Mac user. If you don't care to read it, don't. If you don't want to buy it, don't.

The bottom line is that that Dell machine is absolutely incredible piece of hardware. I don't give a flying hoot if it runs Windows, OS X, Linux, or your mom's strip joint; it has technology that has NEVER been put into a laptop in mass production. Period.

SSD hard drive. LED backlit display. 4 gb memory capability. HDMI. WWAN. 128 mb video card in a 13.3'' case @ only 4 lbs.

Now, take the blinders off, and recognize that the reason arn and the other mods decided it was noteworthy news is to show that the technology is out there, and for us Macrumors Mac users to get excited that there is a *possibility* of that hardware being released by our beloved Stevie soon. If anything, it's to spark a conversation and stir up our interests in, *hopefully,* new & upcoming Apple products.

Just because it was released by a competitor does not mean that it should be ignored, or scoffed at as crap because "it runs Windows." If it comes to fruition, it's an exciting direction for not only PC machines, but the whole portable computer industry in general.

Its not only "out there", it is mac-os compatible.

If apple will not be able to give us the best hardware to go along with their superior OS, then Apple needs to let us buy the OS and install it on our intel hardware of choice from our favorite (non-apple) brand.

even a small time, non branded "portable one" launched a 13" ultraportable, SantaRosa based with a dedicated 256mb nVidia GPU http://laptopsinc.com/Merchant2/mer...Code=SXS37&Category_Code=P1SX&Product_Count=1

Heck yeah, ever since the move to Intel, news like this is *GASP* relevant to Mac enthusiasts.

It's only 'superior' BECAUSE they control the hardware, otherwise Apple would be just another Microsoft, trying to serve a Ka-Billion :)rolleyes: ) possible hardware combinations.

... anyway, I hope Apple comes up with a Macbook of some sort very similar to this Dell. In the meantime this Dell has everything I'm interested in, other than non-OSX (legal) for a work machine - including the finger print reader.

13' inch mbp

has anyone ever heard of apple releasing prototypes of future products to their company executives? i work at a Hyatt hotel and two days ago i saw someone in the lobby with a 13 inch mac book, except it was silver, and definitely had the characteristics of a mac book pro, in fact i could almost 100% say it was a 13 inch mac book pro, and so close to wwdc, i wouldn't be surprised if it was... new mbps tomorrow hopefully, cant wait to get mine!

:apple:

It would have to be more than just a 'silver' 13inch Macbook, to be worth it.. IMO

Quoting the entirety of this post because it's so true.

"Lol, Dell!" is not a valid... well... anything, really.

I think the Ubuntu move by Dell recently could be a play to eventually get OSX licensed for some devices. Whether Apple would want to go the clone route is a totally different matter.

Ths form factor and spec is what I'm loooking for in an MBP and I'll gladly pay £1300 (MBP prices, not macbook) for it.

Wow, that's ugly!

And Dell, ewwwww!

It runs Windoze too, strike three!

I'm not going to buy it!!

;)

I'd bet 99% of people reading this wouldn't consider it either but it's a nice attempt by Dell.

It's clearly aimed at the Sony market though.

Roll on the store coming down for an update later :)

MBPro EOL

As expected, the Apple Store is closed, and being updated.
We learned that all MB Pro models are EOL, so the new models to be introduced will most likely be the Santa Rosa-based models, and not only limited to a larger HD and small CPU bump as it was the case for the MacBook models 2 weeks ago. We should know more in about an hour.

This from "hardmac" a french site. What does EOL mean?
