Base price has been the same since 2016, FWIW.
Yup. And not only has it been $2,399 since 2016, it wasn’t much different as far back as 2013 when looking at the discrete graphics models.

The 16GB/512GB was $2,599 in 2013, then $2,499 in 2014 and 2015.

In 2016, Apple lowered the base config to 16GB/256GB for $2,399, with the 16/512 back to 2013’s $2,599.

In 2019, the 16” MBP brought the 16/512 config down to $2,399. That actually represents a $200 price cut from the previous 3 years, even though the screen grew to 16”.

Some like to blame the Touch Bar for a $400 price increase in 2016, since in 2015 (and before) Apple had a $1,999 15” MacBook Pro. But that was for the integrated graphics model, not the discrete graphics model.

Yes, Apple discontinued that lower performing model. But comparing Apples to Apples—not oranges—shows the price trending downward, especially if you take inflation into account. (Today’s entry level 16/512 config was priced at $2,599 in 2013, which is $2,879 in today’s dollars. So it’s almost $500 cheaper now than it was in 2013.)

Looking forward to an updated machine from Apple. The new XPS 13 looks amazing (I am running an XPS 15 myself) and I would love to have the Apple match that kind of tech (i.e. a decent keyboard and truly thin bezels). I will be sticking with my Dell (running Manjaro Linux), but my wife needs to update and would (understandably) like to stick with MacOS. But that is only happening if the keyboard gets fixed.
