That's pretty much the pricing I was expecting. You just have to look at the pricing for the 15" retina models and you can get a pretty good idea of what the 13" models will sell for.

Ouch, pricey. I'm still thinking this generation of retina computers is just a little too cutting edge with a cutting edge price to match. The 13-inch Air for $1199 seems like the laptop to buy for most folks.

Yea. I'm convinced on retina for iDevices but not yet in the realm of computers. I've seen retina and non retina side by side and I had to really get close to notice. Of course the girlfriend said, "I really don't see the difference."

If/When they do a retina iMac 27" - expect to sell a kidney or lung.. Or both for that matter.

That's too expensive. The base retina should be $1499 - at that, I'd at least be interested. A $500 premium is too much (and is a higher percentage premium than that demanded by the 15") for an improved screen and an SSD.

If true, the 13" retina won't be remotely worth it a - base 13" MBP will offer the same computing power for 2/3 the cost. And most people won't notice the SSD much - it doesn't make you facebook any faster, or type emails, or use Word any faster.

Too much.

This is perfect for the 50 rich kids going to Stanford!
Sorry, we weren't designing this product for anyone else, but have a bunch of amazing two year old computers available for your children as well. They're STILL magical.

That's a lot more than I expected honestly. I imagined that Apple would price it in such a way that it could be in competition with the currently developing 'Ultrabook' market which PC manufacturers started pushing hard around the same time that the rMBP was released - not have a price which sits it far above that market. Apple could have just lost a lot of potential Ultrabook sales to PC manufacturers.

It's crazy to think that PC manufacturers haven't done their own high resolution screen notebooks. If I were a rich Chinese elite, I'd manufacture my own copycat retina MBP and sell it for $500 less.

PC's have had high res screen option for a while. The sony z series has offered a 1920x1080 screen for more than 4 years now. You could buy 1920x1200 in many 14 and 15 inch laptops for a very long time now as well. Atleast 8-9 years.

1699$ for the base rMBP 13"?

Thats way too much. I was guessing $1499/$1799 for the 13" since the 15" matched the price of higher model classic 15" at $2199.

Though cant say Im surprised. They wouldnt sell any MBA if the rMBP had the same price.

Im gonna stick to the regular 13" MBP since it has the disc drive and it's user serviceable. Maybe in a few years when rMacbooks is all that is available and the price has come down I will get one for my first Mac upgrade.

Bitching about a rumored premium computer and its price? A student needs a retina display? I'm betting a sharp pencil and some paper would still work for most students, and would leave a much smaller hole in your parent's credit line.

If you really need to type something, try anything positive about which you are truly informed. That doesn't have to include each thread announcing theoretical specs and pricing on any Apple product.

What are they teaching kids in school these days? :(

Unless you're 13

what a waste.

Only way these prices ever drop is if people don't buy them.

Can build an outstanding PC with all the bells and whistles that blow these models out the water.

Prices are to insane.

Unless you are 13 years old, I can't honestly believe you are serious.
Can that water blowing PC also put out a 7-8 hour battery life?

You make such a good point on your first line (on the price dropping issue), just to lost all the reason on the second paragraph.. I mean, come on, still comparing... We know Apple charges a Premium, a ridiculous one on this particular case if true, IMO, but still, post like yours sound like troll fishery... : /

Also, prices can be TO sane people too, as long as they have enough money. :p

expensive, yes; However, it is actually priced perfectly. If it was too low it would destroy sales of higher end Airs. This mostly gives people looking at a high end Air two choices.

Think about it like this. If you were to buy a base 13", upgrade the RAM and the SSD to 256 you would be looking at an additional $300....and of course the retina display carries a premium. Oh yeah, and it is overall a better build than the 13" pro (thinner and better cooling).

Is it dual core or quad core?

Why are ppl so surprised?

This is actually $100 cheaper than my estimates. I was expecting 13" rMBP to start at same price point as base 15" MBP. You guys all act surprised... really?? You didn't think apple would charge a premium on top of the high cost on one of these panel? What other laptop has these resolutions? Do you remember how much the MBA cost when it first came out? Don't worry, over time price will decrease slightly, then it will take a huge cut when they finally phase out the MBP's and it'll be retina alone. I'm thinking that'll happen in 2 years time.

In the UK the price for the higher end model will now likely be £1649.
That can buy you a Samsung Ultrabook and a blazingly fast desktop PC.

I didn't think about the European prices. Yeah, that kind of sucks. Well, at least you've got options.

Too much for me. Makes the mbp for 999 I just had best buy price match seem like a really good deal

I'm relieved. If they had priced this competively I might have made an impulse buy on day 1 and sold my MBA at a big loss.

Not bad at all. What's $1700 when it will help increase Apple's profits? That's all that truly matters.

Why would you spend that much on a dual core without dedicated graphics card, could this machine edit high def video smoothly? If not then whats the point?
