How is the hard drive user replaceable but the battery isn't? Those pictures make it seem quite easy. Maybe the battery doesn't have enough casing to sell it safely?

For a second I thought they had removed the digital optical ports, but no, they are simply combined with the analog ones - very clever.

The big question is, does it have a digital out?

That is a must have for hooking up to a home theater system.

Not a big question really, it's on Apple's website for Tech Specs on the 13" MBP:
Combined optical digital output/headphone out (user-selectable audio analog line in)

So same as my current MBP which is nice since I use a Mini-TOSLINK connection to my Klipsch computer speakers. :)

It's confusing. Sure you can google things of question. You could also go straight to the source and find the answer awaiting you on Apple's website. Some people are just confused because this is a Rumors website. When information is available on here, maybe they just see it as a rumor and need lots of reassuring and confirmation. Furthermore, it is a Mac Rumors website. That is:

speculation + extreme fanaticism = anxiety attacks

Or at least that's how rumor has it.

While I agree with you when it's about the rumours, there are times when the facts are available from the manufacturer (in this case the Tech Specs page on the apple.com site).

previous unibody 13 + 8GB support?

will the previous 13 inch unibody support 8 GB ?

Hi

Can someone just clarify, if I was to buy a new 13" MBP, how much would I have to spend on SL, when it comes out?

Was gonna say you could always chuck in a resistor to give you a voltage drop (not really suggesting you could do it, or if it's possible).

But i realised you have to step up the voltage. So really this whole post has no point and achieves nothing.

Good thinking! It's the old one that is 10.8, not the new one, so that would work. I'll check it out in my post... of course, we'd need to check the charging voltages are compatible, too...

I thought it was only $9.95 for those purchased after June 9th?

Which will probable convert into £10 for us in the UK! :(
Jowl is correct. From the apple website:

Snow Leopard Up-to-Date Program.
If you purchased a qualifying Mac on or after June 8, 2009, that does not include Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you can upgrade for $9.95.

Older Macbooks, new battery?

So, you guys think I'm gonna be able to change the battery of my "old" unibody MB 13" to the new battery? I know it's not as simple as switching it, but, would it be possible? It's the only thing I REALLY need to have to stay on top of it.

Thanks!!

I would not attempt it. It is generally not advisable to use a battery with a different power rating than what your laptop uses.

I picked one of these up yesterday in Australia. (2.53, 250GB, 4GB ram)
They only had the 250gb 5400 rpm drives, and with no option of getting a 7200 disk. I went straight from the Apple store and picked up a 500gb 7200 drive and installed it as soon as I got home. It is pretty easy to swap out, with just 10 screws on the bottom of case, 2 more to release the hard disk, and then 4 into the sides of the disk. All up it took around 10 minutes and that was having a good look at it etc. The longest bit came from having to install Leopard from scratch again.
Re SL upgrade, the guy mentioned in store that you fill out something online and they will post out the new disk when it comes available. I can't seem to find the link where you do it. Does anyone know where it is?

Overall it is a nice little machine. It feels snappier than my 1st gen Macbook Pro, that I have been using for just over 3 years now. The SD card sticks out about 1cm from slot, which is a minor annoyance, but it successfully transfered 170 photos from my wife's camera quicker than I can do it via the camera or a card reader.

+1. The battery doesn't seem to have significantly different dimensions to the old one.
FFS Apple are your design compromises more about marketing than engineering these days?

wait...
does this mean I can't replace the battery...ever? Because that would suck. I would also like to be able to get into my macbook pro without voiding the warrenty, please..

hopefully apple fixes this sorry excuse for a "pro" computer before my early 2008 conks out (i know i've got a while:D)

If you need to replace the battery, Apple will do that for free (free doesn't include the cost of the battery of course). The hard drive and the RAM are still considered user replaceable and upgrading those will not in any way void your warranty.

Losing the audio input is frustrating, and in my opinion makes this not a "Pro." Getting the firewire back is a good thing, but it's annoying because several of my friends have the previous 13" and it's a bit of a struggle without it. I'm not a mac whiner or a fanboy, but this seems to be an example of Apple deciding that Firewire was unnecessary, and then changing their mind because of public reaction. I think there needs to be more consistency. The Macbook upgrades are great, but they shouldn't have ditched the audio input on the 13... :(

I was going to ask if it was mono or stereo ... but

This pretty much means the input is mono? Or am I misunderstanding?

While I can record on my MP, it was always nice to have my PB around for things too. I also believe a lot of other people use their macs for recording, how does the single audio in/out port affect that possibility? Does that guarantee the need for an interface now? (opposed to before some instruments didn't need one (acoustic) and others could use the Griffin iMic.

Anyone halfway serious with recording on their computer is going to use an interface anyway, though it's definitely less convenient to carry an additional device. Even one the size of an iMic.

There's never been anything "pro" about any audio input on a laptop. For professionals doing audio work on a laptop, this doesn't change a thing. What does change is the ability to now use high quality FW interfaces such as the RME FireFace 800 on a $1199 laptop. That is, of course, if it works with the chipset being used in the 13" MBP.

The audio output port functions as an input port as well. Yes, you won't be able to do both at the same time, but at least it's there.

1cm?! You'd think that with all the space that was saved by getting rid of the battery compartment... It's a good thing they didn't add SD to the air.
