I know a Scorpio Blue 500GB shouldn't really benefit/suffer from the update but I ran a benchmark test before and after the update using Xbench:

Pre update:

Disk Test 60.27
Sequential 89.72
Uncached Write 135.94 83.47 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 133.50 75.53 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 42.69 12.49 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 158.34 79.58 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Random 45.37
Uncached Write 17.06 1.81 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 131.42 42.07 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 70.00 0.50 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 130.96 24.30 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Post update:

Disk Test 58.28
Sequential 82.91
Uncached Write 103.83 63.75 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 126.19 71.40 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 42.45 12.42 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 140.18 70.46 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Random 44.93
Uncached Write 16.92 1.79 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 127.47 40.81 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 70.84 0.50 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 125.58 23.30 MB/sec [256K blocks]

OK, frick, I thought I applied the update, but nothing happened-- no shut down message, etc. I restarted, and the controller still reads 1.5, and the installer says the computer doesn't need the update..

It think it took the update, but didn't appear to. So.... now what?

EDIT
Oh for crying out loud. I followed the links and went to the iMac updater somehow. OK, I'm a retard. Anyone still want an updated benchmark?

Yes, please provide an updated benchmark. Thanks!

I know a Scorpio Blue 500GB shouldn't really benefit/suffer from the update but I ran a benchmark test before and after the update using Xbench:

Try multiple runs of Xbench and see if those numbers are consistent. Can you get numbers similar to pre-update with multiple runs?

Another benchmark run:

Disk Test 61.88

Uncached Write 133.36 75.46 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 51.47 15.06 MB/sec [4K blocks]

Random 45.78

Uncached Read 71.05 0.50 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 129.70 24.07 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Just finish the update.
I feel so good. The resume XP of vmware fusion before take almost 20 sec. now it's 10 sec. Start up is still 18' like before since it's all small files i guess.
But vmware is much faster to resume and suspend.

here is the xbench
Before:
Disk Test 199.74
Sequential 153.74
Uncached Write 188.38 115.66 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 168.17 95.15 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 93.58 27.39 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 245.21 123.24 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Random 285.03
Uncached Write 125.63 13.30 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 283.54 90.77 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 2265.96 16.06 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 474.91 88.12 MB/sec [256K blocks]

After the update:
Disk Test 273.45
Sequential 225.27
Uncached Write 287.31 176.41 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 314.59 178.00 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 114.86 33.61 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 418.23 210.20 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Random 347.86
Uncached Write 121.91 12.91 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 549.09 175.78 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 2548.45 18.06 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 924.04 171.46 MB/sec [256K blocks]

Almost everything is faster now.

Everyone please test this firmware update and place your results in order to get some result consistency and not just from one person! But first indications seems to show that eveything's ok now.....
Well if this gets really confirmed i'm most definetly getting a MBP 13 inch!!!!!!!
By the way, congratulations to everyone. I'm trully conviced that the noise we made here (and everywhere we could) was very important.
And thanks to Apple for solving this problem. Soon enough they'll have another MB owner and from what i've seen i'm not the only one!
Last minute update it's on Engadget where u can find this link: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacBook_Pro_EFI_Firmware_Update_1_7_
Hope this is really for real!

Can people with the BTO SSD option ( hence Apple branded SSDs ) also trying running XBench before and after the update ?

Wooooo!!! Thank god it was fixed. I feel sure that the people on this thread played a part in this fix.

Now I can finally pick one up! :D

Way to go apple for fixing this quickly

zsnow, thanks for the benchies! Great to see an improvement of 100%, that's why we were whining folks. We shall not be denied! :p :apple:

"Apple has not qualified or offered these drives for Mac notebooks and their use is unsupported"

They act like these are some kind of exotic add-on.

sounds a bit like corp. denial.

wow. is this for all unibody mbp's?

if i got a mbp right now it would have to be the model right before the express card slot was nixed.

Following this thread over the last week has been fun. I only have a platter drive, but I might upgrade to ssd in the future so I am really happy apple fixed the issue. Sorry to everyone that already returned their mbp's about this! Guess you just have to have some faith that apple really isn't out to screw us and is indeed run by fallible human beings that can only do their best :)

Well, I'll be d***ed! I was wrong, I didn't think they could fix this. Glad I was wrong though! :D

Apple's statement:

(..) While this update allows drives to use transfer rates greater than 1.5Gbps, Apple has not qualified or offered these drives for Mac notebooks and their use is unsupported. (..)

and now this thread has become an epic facepalm with ice cream. :D

Unless you're using SSD I guess.

Even more impressive is that's 2009 and they still allow themselves to state something as ludicrous as this. Ho well, who cares?
We can now safely buy the MBP range without remorse or fear that in a few months time our new gear would be relatively obsolete.

Again, kudos to everyone.
