Another question ... What cases, bags, etc do people recommend for the MBP?

I would get the Hi-Res screen even before the Anti-Glare screen The Anti-Glare is good if u use it outside a lot and like you said, you don't.

I'm all about pay for the differences I can SEE. And the Hi-res screen u'll be able to enjoy more. With crisp graphics on the screen.

But that's totally preferential.

Seems like ur pretty convinced that you want the 15". So I'd say just do it and enjoy it!!

@the new dude & others who have purchased new mb pro 13inch

I need pointing in the right direction please having just purchased my second ever computer..macbook pro 13 inch 2.4ghz with 250mb for £999 and the 199 3 year applecare.

i had a Sony Vaio 10.6 inch TGR1mp which cost £1800 back in april 2004 and now has had its day after i threw the optical mouse at the screen after several problems with xp and other stuff and it is now unusable, several other problems with it also including broken web cam and track pad and it does not charge cos ac adaptor is very loose.

I have bought the new core duo basic macbook pro 2 weeks ago but still have £400 burning a hole in my pocket. I have about 40gb of photos and music in total and mostly use it for social networking, fotos, web pages, travelblogging. My previous sony machine had a pentium 1ghz m processor and 40gb hard drive with 512 of RAM..Please let me know ur thoughts on whether its worth doing any of these or holding onto the money and get the new iphone 4g or iphone HD in 2 months.

1) upgrade to 128 SSD - £279

2) upgrade to 2.66 GHZ processor - £249

3) change for basic 15 inch new mb pro with new intel I5 processor and better graphics - cost £499 etra

4) stick with the 2.4ghz and spend the £400 on a set of B&W MM1's speakers instead

I want to future proof my purchase a little and need to know whether it will be sufficient, i dont like buying new things every couple years.

Okay well, i'd suggest you spend the money on the BMW first and then get me a job wherever you work.... I can sure use a BMW too...

When would I notice the Hi-Res screen? It doesn't play Blu-Ray. I'm not going to be using the MBP to edit. Is this something I'll really notice?

You will notice the sharper screen all the time. Everything will look sharper. The pixels are densly packed.

The 15" screen will become even bigger. You'll be able to fit more on the screen. (Does that make sense??)

And it's not just the Blu Ray. You can download TONS of Hi-Def stuff onto your computer now. All of that stuff will look very sharp too.

I did say B & W speakers or Bowers and Wilkins..

http://www.bowers-wilkins.co.uk/display.aspx?infid=4503

I dont own a car just a mountain bike these days.

anyhows...stick with 13inch 2.4ghz and buy speakers or new iphone 4g

or

upgrade to the I5 15 inch macbook pro

will this last me longer and not be as out of date in say 4 years..?

thanks

Oh man, i feel so stupid now!! LOL
Yeah, i'd buy the iPhone 4G for the extra bucks.... Or u can pick up a iPad.... those things seem to be pretty popular now days...

If I may also make some comments. Today I took back a 15" i7 and replaced it with a 13" 2.66. The biggest reason was weight and size. I like to read and surf in bed. The 15" screen would not stay put. It kept falling. I have last years 13" 2.53 and LOVE it! I also like the latest and greatest. I have never had a problem with the 13" and it's proven to be a great work horse. If you are going to do any traveling, trust me, the 13" is much easier to tote around. Being that you are just finishing school, getting married, I would actually recommend the new 13" at 1199.00. It's a really solid machine. The 15" does have a larger screen but I personally don't find it worth that much more. I didn't notice a big speed improvement on the i7 from the 2.53 core 2. Good luck, a mac is still is the best computer, wether it be a 13" or 15". Good luck

Anti-Glare is useless unless you work outside :p

This is completely untrue. What makes a display viewable outdoors is the displays brightness. The anti glare display will benefit the user whenever the display is in a position where light can be reflected such as near flourescent lighting or near a window or glass door when the sun is out. This glossy display is no different than older CRT displays and tvs. If apple ever offered an anti glare 13", i would upgrade. This is my only dissappointment with my MacBook pro but I do still love it.

Ouch you got ripped off. $300 for a processor bump and slightly bigger hardrive. I am surprised apple could pass that off as an upgrade to anyone.

Great input and I appreciate the response ...

Does anyone else have problems with the 15" being too big? Or not portable?

Conversely, is the 13" too small?

I've seen them both and had casual use with both. However, I know that using them a couple times at a friend's house or in the store is different than everyday on your own. FWIW, I have the 17" iMac G5 at home.

Thanks again for everyone's responses and help ...

while I still think I made the right decision buying the 13" because i also have a desktop with a large external display, I think the 13" is so small if it will be your only computer AND you are planning to do real work on it. I say this because the screen can start to feel small after hours of writing code away from home. If there will be no real work done on the computer, I doubt this will be a concern. And I still suggest viewing the anti glare and glossy displays in the store.

I'm not going to be writing code but I almost always have more than one window open at a time. I swear I've got ADD so I'm always working on a couple things at once. This is one of the reasons I wonder if the 15" would be better suited for me. I'll still keep my iMac and use it from time to time, but the MBP will get nearly all of the usage.

If that's the case, you really want the hi res 15" as 1440x900 isn't that much greater than 1280x800

I sometimes find my iMac's screen too small. Even when using dual 24"s I just want more

0% interest for 12 months would make the 15" a lot easier to get. Is the only way to get 0% interest with the Barclays card? Are there other options out there?

Well since everyone in here is being so helpful, I would like to tag on another question:

What is the best way to protect the aluminum body of a MBP??

Thanks!

I've heard InCase enclosures are pretty good, no personal experience though. SeeThru shells are also quite popular

Thanks!
Even though shells like that add a lot of "size" to the laptop, I will look into them cause I want to make sure i protect the computer.

And i won't hijack this thread! :)

FWIW ... I have the InvisiShield for my iPhone and plan on getting it for my MBP. It's thin, provides great protection, and is clear so you still get to see the aluminum!

Doesn't the invisible shield make everything shiny???
