^^^ LOL... Did you guys LOOK at the photo the OP posted??? That is acceptable to you???

Wow. Such low standards.

I'm planning to return it and be done. I would say the pic I sent in is pretty obvious that it has a problem. I'll admit that I'm a bit over sensitive to color and lighting. I edit videos and photos all day, so that's stuff I look for pretty intently.

I guess if you can't see how ugly that screen is, then there's not much more for me to say on the subject.

Ok, so I'm on my 13th iPad. In fairness, one of those was because I decided I wanted a different color, and another one i decided i wanted to upgrade to one with 4G. 3 were returned right away in the store (scratches, dark blotches behind the screen). A couple were super yellow, one had over a dozen dead pixels, and one even had the bottom half of the screen turn baby blue!

I just got a new one from the genius bar tonight. Pretty bad backlight bleed, and the weirdest thing: there's a darker 'stripe' through the middle of the screen. Has anyone else seen this on their iPad? (Not to mention the pinkish areas)

Yep, I see the dark stripe through the middle of the screen. This is one of the things I was talking about, uneven whites. I have this issue with my Macbook pro screen too. Almost all electronics are built by China so this problem will continue. I heard that it will only get worse.

I support for people complaining about ipads, but if you are exchanging these to show us how the product is crappy, please keep doing it.

Otherwise you should have just returned it for a refund. You probably spent good $1000 on gas alone. This damn Apple is help driving gas companies more income. Gas companies ought to send "THANK YOU" letter to Apple for this.

It's ridiculous that the customer becomes Apple's QC.
Good post. This is really good. I gave you a + rep.

There's no doubt that the iPad in that picture is defective. But how many returns and exchanges does it take before you decide that maybe this iPad release is not good enough to meet your standards?

Do you think it is normal to keep going back for exchanges a dozen times?

I don't, which is why I'm on the phone with Apple returning it today.

I have seen the Stripe of Darkness on the left or right, but not in the center.
And mine Macbook pro have tree lighter stripes on the screen with black background. Won dark strip on the right of ipad screen.

This pic is one of the best representations of the utterly awful quality some of these new iPad screens exhibit.
Most is built crap. this aint da only won.

To be fair though, scratches, dust, blotches, etc. does not equate to "DOA". Dead on arrival means dead, as in does not power on, not cosmetically flawed. You're already fighting an uphill battle to be taken seriously by this crowd...don't be dramatic.
LCD pixels fails over time, not only happen as DOA. You must is new.

Did you take pictures of all the 13 iPad screens?

Are you returning them all to the same store? What are they saying when they see you come back with another? hmmm this makes me reluctant to get an iPad.

I took photos of basically the same issue, at the request of Apple corporate, who then forwarded them to "engineering". I was politely told, "Sorry, it's within spec."
They says it's withing spec cause all of there ipads has issues. its the lower standards build qualitiez. what dou you expact when all is build by China? 50 cent / hr labor theres you're answer.

I can't wait to see when you next test your car's MPG to the advertised claims....

Or if the windows glass tinting is slightly different than what was shown on the commercial.

Better keep returning them, I hear the 322nd return is sometimes the charm!

13 iPads is a bit ridiculous don't you think? How many people would keep buying and returning something 13 times?!? For me I'd say screw it and wait for a new batch or try a different store.

Is there a way to delete a thread? I didn't realize people would get so worked up over this. I was just curious if anyone else had seen the dark stripe issue.

I don't think people are getting "worked up" but buying and returning something 13 times is a bit odd don't you think?

I visited an Apple store yesterday, and also a John Lewis department store. I was able to examine around five demo units in total.

Two had pure white screens. The rest had pink tints of varying degrees. Having seen it in two iPads I've bought and returned, I spot the tint instantly when I open a new tab in Safari and drop the keyboard out of the way.

One of the pure white iPads had a strange "spotlight"/pinching effect at the bottom right corner, indicating a backlight problem. However, the iPad was fixed down and I was unable to even pick it up to examine it.

The other model with a pure white screen looked pretty good as far as I could tell.

Some people posting here are undoubtedly fussy but I'm with those who believe the quality control on the latest iPad just isn't good enough. Clearly Apple's manufacturers have been unable to perfect the new screen technology.

All they could do is ignore the issues. Perhaps surprisingly, I think this is an OK view to take. Most people don't spot the problems. However, it's not of the quality I expect from Apple. Looking at an inferior Sony tablet nearby in the department store (not Retina resolution obviously) I looked on enviously at the unambiguously pure whites that tablet could manage. (The OS looked horrific though.)

In other words, this is not good enough, Apple! Must try harder or your precious brand will be tarnished.

I said I have. This is not uncommon with electronic displays.

Why delete? This thread is good. Please keep posting. I like it.

they have medications for this type of OCD...

Will people stop throwing this term around as an insult? OCD is an illness and there are people whose lives are made hell because of it.

Those who passive-aggressively throw around this term also utterly misunderstand what OCD actually is. They're probably closer to the mark if they say somebody has obsessive-compulsive personality disorder but I doubt any psychiatrist/psychologist will make such a diagnosis with only the fact somebody isn't happy with an item of consumer electronics as evidence.

Nobody's actually making a psychiatric diagnosis. Do you really think anybody is going to say "what's that? These people aren't actually having this specific mental health issue?"

The casual use of OCD is crass, agreed, but no different than calling people paranoid or any other figurative use of psychiatric language. It's insensitive, so perhaps you could tell us how to refer to this bizarre behavior?

Apple - All they could do is ignore the issues.
Good statement. + Rep.

That's why they tell you "it's within spec" when people send in photos of the displays. Apple knows the problem but pretending it's not a problem. If they admit this to the public it will turn into huge chao for Apple.

Mine has no problems. the display is perfect, haven't found a reason to complain. No backlight leaks, shadows, nothing.
I guess some people are seeing things their mind wants them to see, not what's really there.

Keep in mind that the iPad glass is polarized, which also means that it directs light in certain directions. Put on some polarized sunglasses and then try to look at the display in both landscape and then portrait orientation, and you'll see what I mean. The dark stripe in the middle could be an optical illusion or side-effect of polarization. And due to the optics in most cameras, the photos we see could be showing more defects than reality.
