They already check your drive with XProtect and analyse all your photos in Photos on the Mac.
I did not know XProtect existed. Thank you. Photos app obviosuly analyzes images but when you say that analysis is uploaded to iCloud, are you saying that data is associated with the images to service Photos app usage or that is Apple using that information for their own purposes?

XProtect just checks quarantined files against known malware hashes. It has no effect on photos (except possibly for photos you've downloaded, because that could quarantine them).

I believe the "they analyze all photos on your Mac" thing applies to aspects such as face recognition and search, and iCloud is only used to aid sync between devices, not as storage.

I was hoping to hear rumors of a new 12 inch MacBook. The one they discontinued was really nice to carry with you. It didn’t hurt my back to carry in my backpack, and it was a real computer, unlike the iPad. Oh well.
Couldn't agree more.

It also had a broken keyboard. And a failure-prone SSD. And a failure-prone Core2Duo*. And that single USB port often failed as well. An overpriced paperweight.
There is a potential slot for a superlight Mac in a similar 11-12" form factor, but the "pink book" was an overpriced and broken (keyboard) toy with performance more netbook than Mac like.

Give it an M1, new KB, 2 USB C ports (and maybe include a stealthy black color option) and that machine should be able to carve out a healthy niche for itself.

Are they both coming out at the same time or this another one of the Apple things where the 14 comes out in the fall and maybe the 16 in the spring/summer 2022.

You had me at stealthy black.....how long has it been since there has been a black Apple laptop? Too long IMHO...too long...

I think the previous post is speaking in hyperbole. I have a 2019 16-inch MBP and I don't have the issues the poster is describing....
Nope, it a bit of an understatement and it's a well know issue... and one of the longest forum discussion on MacRumors ever at over 200 pages... the GPU in the 16 can't be cooled properly (the solution I've *had* to use because my income relies on design+development with 2 monitors and long MS Teams sessions is to purchase a Blackmagic eGPU).

And unless you're running an external monitor at 1080p (maybe) your fans are going to go full blast... and if you start doing anything like Google or MS (also Slack) you're going to see kernel_task suck up your CPU to a unusable crawl to cool the system down... I've heard the 5600m is better, so maybe you have that... otherwise maybe you maybe speaking in hyperbole about the lack of an issue.

Here's the long running thread:

Where would you look? Honest question.
I might end up getting an M1X. I'm just pissed that Apple is caving to the surveillance state in any way. If I really wanted privacy that bad there's always Linux, but I mean it's unnecessary. I just don't like the creepy thoughts of doors this could open.

Sadly I think this will be standard across all platforms if it goes ahead which it might not

I absolutely can't wait to get rid of my 2019 16" MBP with its ****ing piece of dog **** abomination touch bar. Whoever came up with the idea for the touch bar should be ritualistically castrated and then fed to a pack of only somewhat hungry wolves so that they just bite off small occasional pieces over a long stretch.

I've got a 2017 12" Macbook and its been my travel machine since then. Never had it glitch or break or any other problem. But then, I don't dribble crumbs over my keyboard.

Slow, but for what I do when mobile, it's fine. I also have a new model 13" M1 MBA which I bought to replace it, and I figured I'd sell or retire the 12", but to my surprise, the 12" still goes in my bag a surprising amount of the time, other than when I need a bit more horsepower. I'm not sensitive to the keyboard issue.

Weirdly, the 12" screen somehow feels a bit more deluxe compared to the M1 MBA 13". When traveling, smaller and lighter wins.
