I’m so torn right now... buy the currently refreshed rMBP 13 2020 or wait one year for the new 14 MacBook Pro? I’m still using the rMBP from 2015 and it’s still going strong, however I just wished Apple would have introduced the 14 inch right now. What’s for sure is that I’m not going to buy an Arm processor MacBook, as I cannot wait for the devs to port their apps to the arm platform. Hopefully they will use the new Ryzen processors next year 🤞

I feel your pain, but don’t fall for marketing hype: from 13.3” to 14” is just 1/3” per side. Like the 16”, you really won’t notice the difference. It’s like swapping a 2.8 Ghz cpu for a 2.666 Ghz one - you just can’t tell.

Does (an ARM macOS announcement) make sense considering the product updates they have just done? I don't see them coming out with an ARM Macbook Air months after they announce a significant refresh of the Intel Macbook Air.

If Apple announces an ARM version of macOS at WWDC next month, I would expect them to also announce a hardware Developer Transition System. What form that will take, I do not know.

I do agree with you that I do not believe Apple had any plans to announce a consumer ARM-powered Mac next month. That will be a 2021 product.

I am inclined to believe that Apple's plan was to ship the 14.1" MBP and a refreshed 16" MBP this Summer and both would have mini-LED backlit displays. With those plans now apparently/possibly delayed until next year due to lack of said mini-LED panels, I am inclined to believe this is why they did the basic CPU refresh to the four-port MacBook Pro 13 as a "placeholder" until 2021.

Consumer 13” air
Prosumer 14.1/16” pro
Consumer 12/14/16" Air (but with heat pipe, so the processor is actually usable)
Prosumer 12/14/16" Pro.
There's no good reason why not, they will all sell.
(I would be first in line for the 16" Air. I need a big screen, but don't need a fast and expensive processor or GPU. The current Air is pretty good, but too small, and the current 16 Pro is too expensive, so I stick with my 2015 rMBP15 and wait. I can wait for years, the rMBP is solid as a rock).

Yeah, I know, but deep deep down I still hope that Apple wants to use AMD processors in the upcoming Macs. An 8-core Ryzen 7 4800H would be a dream to have in a Macbook :p I don't understand why Apple is still using Intel processors, they're just a hot mess at the moment, especially with their history of security issues implemented right in.

What I wish Apple would examine closely for the next major MacBook (Pro) laptop redesign is to base it on the new iPad Pro Magic Keyboard principles.

Imagine the same hinge/folding principle — a non removable, thin and light display floating over a heavier base with the computer-parts at the bottom.
It would flip the weight distribution to allow for much greater freedom in screen angle.

Not only would it look modern and plain awesome — it would also give the laptop better ergonomics by raising the screen a little. And give Apple the design edge.

i wish there they put face id and dedicated graphic card to the 14 inch. even if the price goes bit higher but not near to the 16 inch one

I use the brightness and volume keys all day long, thanks. Same with the music playback keys.

My screen Brightness, Volume and Mute are displayed all the time while playback controls are a single extra tap away.

Beyond that, the Touch Bar is so much more useful than just the standard dumb F-Keys its not even funny. I won't go back to a static F-Keys, and I think a lot of others around here really want Apple to give the Magic Keyboard and Extended Keyboard a Touch Bar as well. I know I would jump at that as soon as it is announced.

Po-tay-to, po-tah-to, I guess.

Apple doesn't want to use AMD CPUs, but I am sure they gave it serious thought. AMD cannot supply Apple's needs, their PC OEM commitments and the boxed CPUs out in the open marketplace for DIY builders. AMD will not want to compromise PC OEMs and builders just to get Apple's business because it would ruin their rep in the DIY community. AMD also has made some inroads with EPYC and that's where there are more lucrative deals to be made.

Apple is still using Intel, because up until a few years ago, AMD was the hot mess. Too many on these forums act as though AMD has always been as hot as they are now and forget that Apple would have had plenty of money to acquire them back in 2015 when AMD's share price was $2.32 USD a SHARE, which is a far cry from today's price of $51.90.

Everyone trumpeting AMD today needs a reality check, but that won't happen in these forums. Commenters here will just keep pumping this bilge that Apple should/must/has to go AMD, which Apple would do, if AMD could meet all their needs. I think Apple is fed up with Intel, but Apple's desire to control their own destiny started back around 2015 with the arrival of the A9X and the 12.9" iPad Pro. That's where the rubber really met the road in terms of replacing Intel CPUs. AMD in 2015 was a complete non-factor and fell out of the running a long time ago.

Just my 2¢.

To each their own. I just get irritated when someone tells me I shouldn't have physical keys because I "never use them". I honestly can't see why Apple doesn't just make the Touch Bar a configurable option on every tier of MacBook so everyone can make their own choice about it.

I was in the same boat and decided to order now. For me, it came down to the keyboard. I've already had to replace my butterfly keyboard twice, and I'm not experiencing a sticky key again on my third keyboard. I just couldn't wait another year. The extra screen doesn't seem that significant to me, at least compared to the benefit of having a keyboard that works!
I am in the same boat. I’ve only replaced the keyboard once but the “period” key started to misbehave within 2 weeks. The lockdown is the only reason I haven’t brought it back for another swap. Having said that, I can’t bring myself to buy a fully specced (I only buy full spec) 13 incher just for the keyboard. I want a better screen, especially better speakers, cam, and mic now that my work is remote 100%.

Don't blame you, I feel the same way. But I just can't deal with another year of sticky keys, or having to send it in a third time. (Though, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly Apple returned it to me each time.) I have an iMac Pro as my primary computer with a better camera, speakers, and screen, so I'm not as worried about those features with my Macbook Pro.

I've even considered switching to an iPad Pro or a Macbook Air for my travel/work in my office solution (when I start going back there). But at that office, I have a dock, an external monitor, and a USB-to-ethernet adapter that I need to plug in, so I need the 3 ports of the Macbook Pro.

4K display please.

Agreed, battery life is fabulous on DELL laptops and definitely not an excuse for Apple to say NO.

The accurate display resolution is 3360x2100 for the 14” MBP.

It's really odd that this is the first time since the Pentium M days (a decade and a half!) that AMD has had a competitive laptop CPU, and all of a sudden, everyone wants Apple to switch to AMD. Like, hold your horses. Renoir is really good, but there are probably considerations Apple has made that speak against it. Such as:

  • can AMD deliver in volume? (When was the last time any major laptop came with AMD as default?)
  • what does AMD's roadmap over the next five years look like? How about Intel's? What about Apple's own?

My guess is AMD doesn't do too great on either of those two.

Lots of people were expecting a 14" MBP this month because all the 'analysts' and leakers and reviewers had suggested, telegraphed or hinted that it was coming. From now on I will not watch these predictive videos or posts because they are just hypothesising. I bought the 2020 MBA anyway so ended up very happy with it. Compared the keyboard with the 2019 MBA and not much difference. Here we thought the 2019 was noisier.

Yeah. Be more like Samsung where you release a product that breaks within a day, then look like idiots and start from scratch instead of taking your time to begin with.

Yeah, let’s look elsewhere after needing almost half a decade to get a working, reliable keyboard. Sure.

User-replaceable storage/RAM on a laptop is essential and everyone agrees that M.2 NVMe need to be removable on Macbook Pro.

It most certainly is important to some, you included but also most certainly you don’t speak for everyone as indicated by the fact that you disagree with me.

To many the ability to upgrade within the supported lifespan of a Mac of maybe roughly 5 years is not important at all. I’d go as far as speculating that the amount of people doing any hardware upgrade to a MBP is a fraction of the customers.

That's almost certainly the case, yup.

I'm part of that fraction (I do miss that ability from the pre-Retina era), but I neither extrapolate from my personal needs to everyone's, nor do I think Tim Cook is out to get me.

Still waiting for an upgrade to my 12" retina Macbook. The line hasn't been updated for three years now and once you go fanless and ultra slim there is no way back to a fat old laptop with a spinning fan...

I've noted that the 12" models were criticised for having slow CPU:s and while it was a fair point for the 2015 models, my 12" i7 from 2019 is as fast as the two year newer (mid 2019) Macbook air base model. Only a couple of %-point difference in Geekbench.

Holding my thumbs for new fanless Macbooks with ARM next year...

I have feeling you are waiting in vain. The 12" MacBook is gone - most likely not to be seen again, at least for a long while. And I feel your pain, I have one as well and love it.

Personally, I figured the path was going to be a 12" and then a 14" MacBook, along with the 13 and 15" Pro. Just made sense and harkened back to the days of the iBook and the Powerbook.

My gut tells me that the MacBook is gone -they MAY do a new 11" MacBook Air, to have the 'four sizes like long ago' thing. Odd sizes for the airs, even sizes for the pros.

or the could REALLY wow us and bring back the footprint (maybe smaller) of the good old 17", and stick an 18" in it. Imagine the pro lineup with16 and 18" screens, move the 'MacBook' name to the 13", and then have a 13" MacBook Airfor those wanting a thinner more portable (but less powerful) machine.
