I want one (shiny, sexy, new, Midnight Blooooo) but I'm not going to order one.

The M1 Pro is mostly overkill, but trading for an M2 Air will cost me money and I won't have a better machine at the end of it all.
I’ll have my M1 MacBook Air for a while but hopefully the the Midnight color comes to the Pro models. Unlikely but one can hope. I spec’d the new M2 Air and with semi-equivalent specs it gets expensive quickly and becomes less and less appealing-the 14” MBP begins to look more and more appealing.

Especially when you can routinely get $200 off the MBP 14” like right now.

Probably mostly people who realized the Pro is overpowered for their workload and prefer a thinner, lighter, more portable laptop with better battery life. Or maybe they just want the midnight color :)
I actually have a MBP 14” for just do practice questions for my boards exams. So, I bought it due to new form factor etc (i came from a MBP 2015). But is not the same as 2015. Now Ms chips have the sufficient power even if’s Pro/Max/Ultra/Poor edition to do single-tab practice questions at the browser. I’m planning to return my MBP 14“ and get the New MBA, i save myself more than $1000

Well, I plan on buy one and I currently have 2 14 inchers pros and a 16 inch max. I just want a real light little laptop that's super sexy and that midnight fits the bill nicely :) Will sell my 2 14 inchers if I like it.

Wow, impressive laptop lineup you have. Just out of curiosity- what is your current use case for having two 14 inch Pros and a 16 max? How do you use each laptop?

Hi, I use my Max 16 for my photo business and surfing playing etc... That sits in the middle and then the 2 14's either side for music videos, forex etc. Nice 3 screen setup all independent of each other :) I only really take the 14 inchers into the front rook now and then to earn some money on forex in the evenings for an hour or so. So I DONT really need the M2 Air BUT it just looks so svelte and sexy!!! maybe I will keep 4 laptops!!!!! lol

Incredible. I notice your 16 inch is silver and the 14 inch ones are space grey, is there a color you like better? Which color would you get the Air in?

I hope you realize that the Air is just that: a 'Lite' version of the Pro. And in just about every way. AND, they can sell it the lack of stuff as a feature as it 'weighs less' (from missing parts).

Lite versions of anything, are questionable. Fortunately Apple isn't charging more (for less).

My opinion is you probably want fans in this if you need any kind of performance. Throttling is not something I need presently.

Now if they brought back the 12".... :)

Thanks :). I quite like the contrast of the silver one in the middle and the space greys on the outside. But yes I prefer space grey for the MacBook Pro's BUT without any hesitation I would choose the midnight on the M2 Air for sure. The darker the better. I also had a 14 inch max fully specced on the silver when it first was launched and I totally loved the 14 in silver as it contrasted so nicely with the dark keyboard but this is what I now have currently.

Go for it.
Yes I agree totally but I want a super thin MacBook in that dark colour. Specs art important to me as I have more powerful laptops here anyways

Meet the family!! :)

Plus I love how they all share the same power MagSafe 96w cable which sits behind the middle one at the back of the desk out of sight.

I’m absolutely bouncing. The 14” is great and it’s what I needed when I got it. Different priorities now and despite the downgrade in some areas, the higher RAM ceiling and the size/weight are important, so moving to the Air as my companion to the Studio on my desk.

Its not just a more powerful laptop you lose when downgrading. The screen is better on the 14, i suspect the speakers, i worry about ssd speed. Once you jump to 16 ram and 500 ssd too damn close to price.
I picked up the m1 air and the 14 pro and for me hardly any weight diffrent. Now some might say the dont need pro and air is good enough but the question is who is selling a 14 which they will lose money and get the new Air and i cant believe it will be many

I downgraded from a new 16" to a 14" because of weight and size. But that's more of a lateral move, as the are the mostly the same internally.

I wouldn't want to go any further. I really get a kick out of very small and light laptops, but the Air isn't the 12"

Not that's it's not an ultralight, but the 12" was certainly.

Someone mentioned the speakers. This would make me nervous, as the 14" speakers are great.

I was very tempted to do this during the initial oooh and aaaaah of the keynote, but in reality it would be a downgrade in a bunch of ways. The display is significantly worse being smaller without mini-LED or ProMotion, speakers would definitely be inferior, multi-core speed of both CPU and GPU would be downgrades, HDMI and SD card slot are removed, etc.

Of course, I have a simple and easy solution to satisfy my desire for it; I’m ordering one “for my wife”! :)

Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha no

Why would I spend $1899 on a laptop that is worse than my existing one? My 14 inch costed as much as the similarly spec'd M2 Macbook Air so why would I downgrade to that?
This is by design. Apple knows if people get within a couple hundred dollars, they will spend up for a better spec'd computer. Part of what made the M1 MacBook Air so appealing is price/performance. It's an incredible laptop in every way when you consider the $999 starting price, and even less with deals.

I'm coming from the 16 inch 2019 and will probably be ordering the air tomorrow. Although I should really buy a MacBook Pro for what I use a laptop for I really want something thinner and lighter. I haven't done much 3D work as of late so I'm not too concerned about losing out on some of the beefier hardware.

My rationale is that if I ever have a chance to get back into 3D work again I can always upgrade, in the mean time I'll enjoy the small form factor and better portability of this machine that I'll do dev work on. I've had Airs in the past and was able to run all kinds of programs on them just fine.

I had no need for the power of the MacBook Pro 14", but I really wanted the MiniLED display and (correctly) presumed it would be years before it made it's way down to the MacBook Air. So once the Air gets MiniLED, I'll laterally trade.

I have the 14" Pro 16/512 but might order an M2 Air. I don't really need the power of the Pro, never connect to external monitors, and carry it with me everyday, everywhere I go for my business. A lighter model would be nice and I just don't really need that much power that the 14 is capable of. I kind of want to try the new M2 Air out for a week or so because I really do like the 14" Pro screen and worry the Air will be noticeably less sharp/brilliant. Also, as an aside, I don't really need more than the base spec'd model but I'm worried about the slower SSD speeds--as seen in the M2 13" Pro reviews--and losing the snappiness of the Pro. Maybe I should get the 512GB model but I really don't need the space. So... I'm unsure as to whether I will order one to try it or just wait for the deluge of reviews.

are you sure you need both? seems like overkill a bit...
I could sort of understand the desire to own a 16" MBP / 13.6" MBA.. but a 14" MBP / 13.6" MBA with less than a pound of weight delta, in a similarly sized package, does seem like overkill to me. Of course, it's not my money! And if I was Ultra Loaded I'd probably have gone that 16" MBP / 13.6" MBA route myself.
