I could sort of understand the desire to own a 16" MBP / 13.6" MBA.. but a 14" MBP / 13.6" MBA with less than a pound of weight delta, in a similarly sized package, does seem like overkill to me. Of course, it's not my money! And if I was Ultra Loaded I'd probably have gone that 16" MBP / 13.6" MBA route myself.
OR we are just all really jealous LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

are you sure you need both? seems like overkill a bit...

I'll let KPOM speak for themself, but the reason I want an M2 Air is for travel (and, yes, the svelte industrial design of the thing).

When I was rocking a 15-16" MBP as my main machine - a secondary smaller, lighter travel laptop made more sense. The bigger laptop doesn't work in an economy seat and if I had a current 16" MBP, I would be hovering over the buy button tomorrow. With the 14" I can totally use it for travel, so even though I want the M2 Air, there is no reasonable justification to get one. Curse you 'logic'!

But, oh that sexy Midnight Blooooo!

I know this thread is about the prior MBP 14 inch verse the new M2 MacBook Air, but I was looking for opinions on the new 13 inch MacBook Pro compared to the new MacBook Air. They look relatively specked the same to me, I know there’s a difference in display tech, but I don’t know which one is “better”. Also I know that the MacBook Pro has a little better battery, better speakers, and has a worse WebCam and I think that’s about it. I can configure both of them to be exactly the same price with the only difference being what I mentioned above. I’ll be using it for logic pro (solo projects) and maybe some web development, that’s about it. I feel like the Air would suffice but looking for opinions. My current laptop is a 2016 MacBook Pro quad core Intel.

Why you think most people care about this? And if this option is a must, you shouldn’t buy the MBA from the beginning.
I’m not sure how many people will be impacted by this limitation. Merely highlighting it’s deficiencies.

The Air is far superior to the new MBP 13". There are a ton of videos discussing this.

As for Logic Pro, you'll have no problems whatsoever with either machine. I've got 4TB of sample libraries and plugins and will be picking up a new Air for portable music production and work.

Please don’t give Apple money for the “new” MBP M2, if any product in their lineup is a slap in the face to the consumer it’s that thing.

The screen on the Air is not bright enough and can’t run Vivid so no deal. It’s a shame because it would be nice to be able to use it outside.

I'm in the same exact boat. That just means we should sell our 14" MBPs and get a 16" MBP along with the new Air... right? RIGHT? 🤣

I find it odd how so many people would get a 12 inch but not the new form factor 13. The dimensions are very similar

I have a MBP 14" that I got last October that I love, but I'm starting grad school in the fall that is largely virtual/hybrid. I will need to be able to video conference/use online collaboration tools like Canvas/MS Teams/Zoom/Office 365 on the fly.

I've been doing some other professional development courses that are virtual this year and I've found that the weight is VERY noticeable when I carry it in my pack along with my headphones. Honestly it's probably over-powered for me as well considering I don't do content creation, photography or programming (the most 'intense' thing I do is play the Sims 4 sometimes).

I know it's crazy when I have a great laptop already but I like the idea of cutting some weight from what could end up being a daily haul laptop (I work on campus so I may end up going to the library for research/study). Not to mention I have an iMac at home if I want a bigger screen. I may need needing to install parallels according to my academic program no matter what mac laptop I'm using due to the university's preference for MS products.

Am I wrong wanting the new MBA? Thanks for listening!

Sadly, "logic" and "want" are often at odds with each other...Seems like the M2 Air will be great for travel but the 14" MBP is still pretty good for travel...

It sounds like you don't need higher scaled resolutions on external monitors / connect to multiple monitors, so definitely get it. It's expensive but the weight and volume difference, albeit not numerically material, will be noticeable. I have the M1 Pro 16" and it is heavy and chunky. So far, during my three months of ownership, I've taken it off my desk literally just once

Until you activate Vivid, which as I said will not work on the Air because it in not an XDR display.
Oh, my apologies. Kind of blanked out that part of the post from my brain / just thought it was an app you wanted to run that benefited from having higher brightness and more contrast.

If they bring out an M2 Pro Mac Mini, then I’d probably sell my 14” MBP and get that for home, then an M2 MBA for the road. Or even better a 12” MacBook!

I upgraded from the 2018 MacBook Air to 14" MacBook Pro (M1 Pro). Will order the M2 MacBook Air for my mom, she also has the 2018 MacBook Air.

I had a maybe not meant to be moment with my 14” 16/1TB, ordered online here for 20% off and was sent to local office works store, went to get it yesterday and the lady I saw first thought I was cancelling the order and told the girl who went to get it that, while I am waiting at the desk, I thought she was just checking the order she actually cancelled it and refunded to my card lol. She said I can sell it to you again for same price ffs, I didn’t even know if had the funds on the card as can take 5 days to go back on, so said I’ll go home and check and let you know. It’s still sitting at the store. Might cut my losses and save $1300AUD and get the base Air 2.

If I didn’t need the 8 performance cores, I’d go with the M2 air over the 14” MBP.

It’s a chunky little thing. But powerful.

If you don’t need all the power. Go slim.

Any owners of the 14-inch MacBook Pro planning to order the M2 MacBook Air?
🙋🏻‍♂️

I've been using a Silver 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max (with 32-core GPU, 64GB Memory, 2TB of Storage) since November 2021.

Today I pre-ordered the new Midnight MacBook Air with M2 (with 10-core GPU, 24GB Memory, 2TB of Storage) with delivery early August.

Ask away, as I go catch-up with the rest of this thread.

I thought about it, but I'd just miss too many things. Mainly the amazing display on the 14" at 120hz, but also the right side TB4 port so I can dock/charge in any orientation. Performance would be similar enough for me. I mainly want to see a size comparison to the 14", how much smaller is the footprint?

Probably mostly people who realized the Pro is overpowered for their workload and prefer a thinner, lighter, more portable laptop with better battery life. Or maybe they just want the midnight color :)
Definitely like the color better, but then what do you do with the 14in.
