I bought an Intel MacBook Pro 2 weeks before the M1s came out. I knew what I was doing (as well as that I didn't want to jump into 1st gen stuff). No remorse - suits my needs. New stuff comes out all of the time. Granted, Apple's range is a little confusing at the moment, but it's a massive transition. My machine will last me a good 5 years or do (saying that, one of my machines is a 12 year old iMac that I still use daily). These new M1X machines have been on the radar for along time now - we ought not be surprised.

I think it’s wise to wait if you can since a lot of changes are coming as well as the multi-external display issue likely being sorted. I returned my MBA because I can get away with a desktop for now but its a solid machine at a great price and anyone that needs one can’t go wrong.

I mean Apple duped everyone with the M1 MAcBook Pro 13” like people are mad in less than 8 months here comes a 14” M1X with 4 USB4 aka Thunderbolt 4 ports. Like game over.
A 12 Core M1X and a 16 Core GPU.

I’d be furious.
Why?

If you need four ports, more RAM etc, you'd have waited right?

If you did buy one, or an Air, you've bought a laptop which is well-priced and incredibly powerful - are they not more powerful (simplifying things here) than nearly every other Mac apart from the top-end ones for nearly everything?

It would have been different if these first M1s were crippled in some way, but they're fantastic products and they've continued to sell other options for those who need more ports/RAM etc.

Honestly those who need 4 ports or want a new design, have for sure decided to wait instead of pulling the trigger on these models.

I had the opportunity to buy the Air for 950€ and even then I decided to keep my 16" for the time being. I'm looking forward to these new 14" models.

Everyone buying a 13" M1 MacBook is told exactly what they are getting. It's their own free and hopefully educated decision whether they buy one, whether they don't buy one, or whether they buy something else. It's nonsense to claim that anyone was duped here.

Who could possibly have foreseen that Apple would release more and better MacBook models in the first year of the new Mx era?

Clearly, the expectation of any reasonable person would be that the M1 MBA/MBP models would be the definitive and final release in these categories for Apple for 12-24 months to come, and they’d have every right to be BOILING FURIOUS should Apple release anything else in the 13/14 range through all of 2021 and most of 2022.

Yup, that seems totally a normal and sane thing to think.

My MacBook Pro will still run my music software fine (as it does now) when the new models come out so who cares about an extra inch ? You wouldn't buy anything if you cared about a perceived obsolescence. Its a great Mac now and it will still be a great Mac in a year or 3 years time.

Who could possibly have foreseen... everybody which isn’t looking only at apple ;).

1. The reasons to sell M1 was: apple, new macos big sur, new soc, new hype, very cheap = it’s easy to earn a lot of money and to get new apple users.
2. The reason for M1X and M2 and new MacBooks are: Intel, Amd, Nvidia (new much stronger cpus and gpus which will come in the next half year 2021) / competitors. Also other competitors -> notebooks -> Lenovo, Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, HP, Dell, Acer, Microsoft, Huawei, Schenker, Honor, Razer, Fujitsu, Aorus, Alienware, Dynabook, ...
3. Problem for Apple: when the others are upgrading now or in the next half of 2021 to 32 gb ram and 64 gb ram, then apple can’t stay with only 8 to 16 gb ram. Intel comes with ddr5 = apple can’t stay with only ddr4. Intel comes with pcie 5.0 = apple can stay with only pcie 4.0. Competitors comes with notebooks with wifi 6e = apple can’t stay with only wifi 6. Some competitors have already 5G in their notebooks and other are doing this in the second half of 2021 = apple can’t stay without. They have already up to 4 or up to 8 tb ssd and the other in the second half of 2021 = apple can’t stay with only up to 2 tb ssd.
4. = it depends on the competitors what apple must do. It’s not only what apple would like to do.

5. I know at least 30 points where at least one competitor is clearly better at one point or more than Apple.

Which in the end comes down to:
Give me the fastest Mac in this screen size as I don’t work with Windows, issue solved.

Most people do not switch ecosystems due to minor spec sheet variances.

I’m entirely happy with my M1 13” MBP.

It does what I need it too, a new machine coming out doesn’t instantly make mine obsolete or slower.

The thing with comparing apple to competitor products is you often need to cherry pick. This laptop has a better gpu, this one has more ram, this one has better battery and so on. But often there’s serious compromises in systems to beat the MBP in one area. As a complete package there’s not too much out there as direct competition.

I bought an m1 MacBook Air to replace my aging 2015 i7 16GB MacBook Pro 15”. I did it knowing that in 6 months or so there would be better hardware.

I adore this little guy. It takes everything I throw at it and should last years due to no moving ports or places for dust to get in. You all enjoy the next round of apple hardware while I sit back and still love my m1 MacBook Air. :)

My only regret for my M1 13” MBP. Is that I didn’t get the air. 😂

That was my thought process for my $599 M1 8GB Mac Mini. I have not complaints about this machine at all, it's very impressive.

I'm more of a maxed-out MacBook person (and then use that as a docked desktop at home), and my MacBook wasn't keeping up with what I needed to do at home (teaching with Zoom and all my open apps and tabs were killing it). This will hold me off for a year-ish until they come out with the MacBook Pro I need (which I'll max out with RAM, 1 or 2 TB, and bump the processor if they have any options, and then keep 5-7 years).
M1 Mac minis are $699 ($679 through education store.

There is nothing to be furious about. I bought the Mac I wanted at the time. When new tech comes out, it doesn't make my current Mac worthless

People who get upset about something like this are people who have equated self worth with what tech products they have. That is why it is so important for them to show others what they have.
Says the guy who then lists all his Apple products in his signature :) . No offence, but I couldn't resist pointing out the (probably unintended) irony. Made me chuckle...

The reason for listing my Apple devices is that when I ask for help or someone has a question, they can see my device specs in my signature. Once in a blue moon it saves me from having to create a post to answer what is already in my signature. If it weren't for that, I would remove it and replace with more apropos quote from one of my many interests.
