Yep. Google is starting to move to AV1 in 8K etc. It's weird that it crashes tho. Could be Monterey since there is a blog testing AV1 and VP9 in M1 Mini and it's fine. With comparable performance and power usage it seems.

It might be a bug.

Wouldn't suprise me though since the safari and other browsers aren't even optimized for pro motion since some stutters while scrolling and safari doesn't go to 120hz . So yeh if it crashes on both safari and chrome it might be because of Monterey AV1 or Monterey with apple silicon
I have only 12 days left before I can return/exchange it. In case it's HW related, I think I'll just exchange it.

Does it happen on any of the demo models at the Apple store?
I actually tried to reproduce it on the demo units yesterday (one 14, and one 16) but was unable to…it is one of those things that takes a little time to get to happen even on mine. It’s not an immediate crash…seems to happen kind of randomly.

I have a feeling it has something to do with the following conditions: Apple Silicon, ProMotion, and HDR content.

I was thinking about returning mine too but evidence gathered so far points to this being a driver/SW issue rather than HW. HDR content plays fine in full screen, my crashes were happening specifically when scrolling while the video was playing in a smaller window.

I have 12d left on being able to return it so hopefully we see something from Apple addressing the issue.

Again since you couldn't reproduce it in the demo units, it may be something off with your actual unit. Just exchange it.

If it’s not happening on the demo units it could be that you got a lemon. I would return it before 14 day return policy and get another one.

Been happening to me as well, YouTube 4K HDR video on Safari. After closing full screen playback the Mac completely shuts down and reboots. M1 Pro 16". I can pretty much get it to do it every single time

It is looking like it is SW related. For all people experiencing the issue, please be sure to submit crash logs to Apple. The more users reporting, the sooner we may be able to expect a fix.

Happened to me as well. 8K scrolling through comments, took a minute or so to crash.Beautiful video though! 4K no issues. Submitted crash report.

Guys. Please. If you guys have the issue. Report it. And try the extension and change it to vp9 only. Retry the video that made you crash and report back . This is chrome only since extension, but it's been reported that it crashes in chrome too. If it does crash in chrome. Try the extension. If the extension prevented it. Then we know what the problem is. And if it is AV1 decoding. We can have a workaround so people's MBP don't panic when watching videos and potentially losing active windows and apps. Thanks

More point suggesting it could be AV1 since YouTube is starting to push AV1 codec for 8K and some 4K videos. But we'll never know if we don't try and figure out if it's the AV1 / VP9 codec or not. I'd try it myself but my MBP is still on the way

Or at least play back the video that made you crash, select the same resolution and HDR if enabled or not. And then right click the player and click stats for nerds. Screenshot that. We'll see if it is vp9 or AV1. If it's either we'll see if it crashes too. That way it's more obvious

I did what you said in Chrome and the crash happened again (even faster than originally)...these were the settings I had:

And you set that settings before you open the video page. Correct? If yes. Then it's prob not just AV1 . But just YouTube HDR in general

I'm getting the same error under the same conditions, 4k HDR YouTube playback on Safari/Chrome. At first I thought it could have been some Chrome bug but then it crashed in Safari too. I'm running Monterey 12.0.1, 16 inch M1 Max with 32GB RAM. I haven't tried the workarounds yet. I'm thinking I should just exchange it, not sure.

I contacted Apple Support, they suggested to wait for a software fix and said it's very unlikely that this is a HW issue. (of course they'd say so). They also recommended submitting a feedback form at https://www.apple.com/feedback. I'll probably wait a little longer, if there's no fix until my 14 days are up, I'll return it. These machines are not cheap, won't be taking any risks.
