Apple dragging on VP9 and AV1 support on all of their hardware is so frustrating. Youtube playback has to be like a top 3 use case for most people.

Good news. The Beta according to @EnderTW has fixed this!! As expected safari which usually only support hw accelerated codec now has disabled AV1 in safari (which is normal and expected since AV1 hw acceleration is available to only some devices in the whole market!!) and on Safari and both chrome it seems like it doesn't crash anymore doing 4K HDR videos!!

Also @EnderTW says the scrolling is much better too. Let's wait until he tested everything and made sure that the HDR crash thingy is really fixed !!

I'm so excited for this bug fix lol

Interesting update - thanks for sharing. I wonder if this is the full fix though because it would still crash if the user was using Chrome or another browser...

Can confirm, this does not crash on Chrome! Safari yep only gives 4k HDR no problem there, plays smooth.
It stutters every few seconds on 8kHDR in chrome but no crashing!

Have you tried scrolling through comments while an hdr video is playing? Cause that’s what seems to trigger the kernel crash for most people. Full screen HDR playback has been working fine.

It is supposed to stutter. Can you imagine?? 8K HDR decoding, using CPU instead of HW decoding :p

I'm for sure gonna use the extension to block AV1 in chrome. no reasons to use AV1 too instead of VP9.
VP9 for us is more optimized since it's hw accelerated (again only some devices actually have AV1 decoder)

And, the best part is. We still have 4K HDR which is what matters to me ...

I suggest if you have time to check more videos while scrolling etc and seeing if u can crash it. While enjoying the screen of course :p .

Yeah this too. Since it seems like a trigger for some people's MBP too!

It took a while longer for me to reproduce in Chrome but the steps seem to be this:

1. Play HDR video in Youtube
2. Make video full screen
3. Reduce back to smaller size to view comments
4. Scroll up and down through comments varying scroll speed
5. Repeat 2-4 and it usually will eventually lock up and the machine will restart

I noticed that if I have more apps open, it happens more quickly.

Anyone want a video emailed to them? I screen recorded, no crashes.

12.0.1 would trigger a crash within 5 seconds.

Prob YouTube is a good uploading service. But wow really nice info so far. Fixes fixes. Really hope they will push this to stable ASAP considering it seems like this beta have many fixes :p

Oh guys, 12.1 is in public beta today, download and see for yourself. @cababah

I think it'll auto update you to public once it's released.

I'm not sure VP9 is even hardware accelerated in these M1 chips (they only mention h.264 and h.265/hevc).

Intel chips since ~2018 had VP9 hardware decode, but I don't think the M1 chips do. I could be wrong on that. From another article it seems like they do some kind of improved handling with the efficiency cores but it's kind of unclear. (A blog showed 4k 30fps av1/vp9 playback at around 250mw)

im able to reproduce the crash and restart in both safari and edge. just watching one of these 4k hdr videos in full screen then escaping out and switching tabs will cause my 14 to restart every time. i was going to return it but i dont think its hardware since there are several reports now. whew.

It is. chrome://gpu shows that too..

Have you tried the 12.1 beta? It's reported that it might be fixed.

Just adding my voice to the crowd. Same issue happening for me on MBP 16" 32GB M1 Max in Safari. Will be reporting this to Apple. Is the consensus still that this is probably a software issue? I have 9 days to return it otherwise.

Ya. Try the 12.1 beta. And report back if it still crashes on HDR . It shouldn't as @EnderTW tested . It looks to be more stable than the stable build for now AFAIK since i saw a user said it also fixes the memory leak.

Can't test ofc since mine is still on the way :(

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm a little gun-shy on installing the beta, as this is my primary work computer. Maybe we can find another brave soul ?. The computer is otherwise fabulous, you are in for a treat when it arrives.

I installed the 12.1 beta and it STILL crashes after watching a YouTube fullscreen HDR video, closing the full screen window, and scrolling through comments. Only difference between the crash in 12.0.1 and 12.1 beta is that in the beta the fans kick on high speed during the lock up, then the computer restarts. So frustrating! This is on a 16" M1 Pro MBP.

Welp. Guess we have to wait for Apple. Don't forget to send the crash report to apple when asked to do so. Hopefully it'll get fixed faster

Yes, I've clicked on the Report to Apple button every time it crashed. I'm already on my second MBP after I exchanged the first one yesterday at the Apple Store. I even got one of the demo models in the Apple Store to crash while I was there doing the exchange. It was running 12.0.1. Hope they get on this one quickly.
