The iPad & Smart Cover combo also screws up the MacBook Air if you rest it on top of the keyboard face down. Not great!

That's because there's a magnet in the topcase called a Sleep Sensor. It's there to detect the lid being closed (which also has a magnet).

And I'm sorry - but this research is BS. If you have a defibrillator, you will have been told not to put magnets on your chest. I own a car, and I've been told to fill it with petrol instead of diesel. NEW RESEARCH JUST IN: cars will stop working if you put the wrong fuel in. Even though people already knew.

----------

The average random person doesn't need to care. Those with defibrillators implanted do care, and they would know. One of my colleagues has one of these buckyball toys on his desk. Lots of strong magnets. I didn't know they could be dangeroues to some people, but I am sure the people who they are dangerous to would know. Just like I wouldn't have a clue which foods contain nuts because I don't care, but someone with a serious nut allergy would know.

Plus - it says on the Smart Cover page on the website:

Snap the Smart Cover into place and it wakes up, stands up and brightens up your iPad or iPad mini. It magnetically aligns for a perfect fit. It wakes and sleeps your iPad on open and close. It’s a handy stand for reading, watching and typing. And it’s a way to make your iPad as personal on the outside as it is on the inside.

Regardless of what you think of the research, do you think that her attempts to propagate education on this matter to be a bad thing?

And yet the diesel pumps at my local petrol station have very obvious warnings on them...

Every knows that cigarettes cause cancer, should be stop trying to reach people on this issue as well?

Do you think education is bad? Or is education just bad when Apple (rightly or wrongly) gets singled out?

So how did this 14-year old "discover" this if it's written in Apple's safety documentation?

She proved it. Even if we *know* that something is true, being able to demonstrate it or otherwise prove it is a big deal in science. It doesn't really change anything if Apple was already aware of the possibility and warned of it, other than generating negative PR.

Oversize smartphone

59 years old man gets stuck on NYC subway doors when his Samsung oversized Galaxy 3 in his outer coat pocket is locked between the closing doors.
He barely survives by promptly taking off his coat that disappears in the Subway tunnel waving between the locked doors.
Gorilla glass might also have been an issue because it did not crack between the doors.

This wouldn't have happened with an iPhone. That half inch in width and height is the only thing separating most of us from life and death.

While unsettling I still think that such a simple way of shutting off the defibrillators is the problem. Not so much that 'its an iPad'.

Many items contains magnets. Speakers for example have some damn hefty ones. What happens if you're sitting next to a giant speaker? Car speakers alone have huge magnets on them. Drop one on a sheet of metal and try picking it up!

The defibs need changing in my opinion.

This sounds more like a failing of the implanted device, as you can't be sure you won't be exposed to magnetism so something so critical ought to be protected as much as possible.

I mean, the Windows Surface uses magnets to connect to its keyboard, so surely it will have the same issue?

So where do we stop?

Do we have to post a notice on any device that incorporates a magnet that it could be dangerous to:

- People with Defibs
- People with pacemakers
- People with metal implants
- People with electronic/hydraulic prosthetics
- Credit cards
- Speakers
- Hard drives

There comes a point in life when people have to take responsibility for themselves. When you have a defib put in, you will be told, quite clearly, that you magnets interfere with it. Its YOUR responsibility to protect it.

The only reason this is a news story is because it's an apple product, you could've done this "experiment" with any product containing magnets.

On defibs it's by design. You can use a magnet to turn them off, if you need to.

Apple iPad User Guide said:
iPad has magnets along the left edge of the device and on the right side of the front glass, which may interfere with pacemakers, defibrillators, or other medical devices. The iPad Smart Cover and iPad Smart Case also contain magnets. Maintain at least 6 inches (approximately 15 cm) of separation between your pacemaker or defibrillator and iPad, the iPad Smart Cover, or the iPad Smart Case.

Definitely, a big discovery .
I sometimes believe the big media-outcry about it happens only due to the fact this girl is 14 years old.

Why? People with pacemakers would be fully aware already wouldn't they, seeing as it's a safety device that is built in on purpose. That iPads have magnets like all the tablets that copy them is also well known. In fact the ads even make a feature of the magnets.

The only thing that is troubling is why Macrumors is putting such an obvious beat up on the front page.

I totally agree.

Also in other news: If you get hit by a drunk driver, dont be surprised. There are cars and alcohol in this world.

...also, not all tablets have magnets.

They wouldn't need to put the magnets inside the iPad if they didn't have the smart cover. Ditch the smart cover and they don't need the magnets. Problem solved.

The iPad 1 is strongly magnetic too despite not having a smart cover, so the problem would not be solved.

Anyone see the episode of The Following where the Followers put industrial magnets on Kevin Bacon's chest to stop his pacemaker?
They should have Duct Taped an iPad to his chest...

Keep in mind that the previous iMacs had magnets on the corners of the screens to hold the glass. Try it. Run a paper clip along the glass.
So don't hug your Mac anymore. ;)

Just because he's smarter than you doesn't mean you should start accusing people now.

Oh wait. Anything "bad" said about Apple means sneaky no good Samsung is behind it.

Bad Samsung. Bad!

Thank you. It's sad, but I've come to expect these types to stumble all over themselves to get in here and slam Samsung in some way. Very. Pathetic. These should all be reported as off-topic. Keep to the subject.
