The iPad & Smart Cover combo also screws up the MacBook Air if you rest it on top of the keyboard face down. Not great!

The average random person doesn't need to care. Those with defibrillators implanted do care, and they would know. One of my colleagues has one of these buckyball toys on his desk. Lots of strong magnets. I didn't know they could be dangeroues to some people, but I am sure the people who they are dangerous to would know. Just like I wouldn't have a clue which foods contain nuts because I don't care, but someone with a serious nut allergy would know.
Snap the Smart Cover into place and it wakes up, stands up and brightens up your iPad or iPad mini. It magnetically aligns for a perfect fit. It wakes and sleeps your iPad on open and close. Its a handy stand for reading, watching and typing. And its a way to make your iPad as personal on the outside as it is on the inside.
And I'm sorry - but this research is BS.
I own a car, and I've been told to fill it with petrol instead of diesel.
So how did this 14-year old "discover" this if it's written in Apple's safety documentation?
59 years old man gets stuck on NYC subway doors when his Samsung oversized Galaxy 3 in his outer coat pocket is locked between the closing doors.
Funny how when any magnets can interfere with defibrillators people choose to write an article specifically about the magnets in the iPad Smart Cover...
And yet the diesel pumps at my local petrol station have very obvious warnings on them...
Every knows that cigarettes cause cancer, should be stop trying to reach people on this issue as well?
Do you think education is bad? Or is education just bad when Apple (rightly or wrongly) gets singled out?
This sounds more like a failing of the implanted device, as you can't be sure you won't be exposed to magnetism so something so critical ought to be protected as much as possible.
I mean, the Windows Surface uses magnets to connect to its keyboard, so surely it will have the same issue?
Apple iPad User Guide said:iPad has magnets along the left edge of the device and on the right side of the front glass, which may interfere with pacemakers, defibrillators, or other medical devices. The iPad Smart Cover and iPad Smart Case also contain magnets. Maintain at least 6 inches (approximately 15 cm) of separation between your pacemaker or defibrillator and iPad, the iPad Smart Cover, or the iPad Smart Case.
Yep, really discovered it.

this is very disheartening news
Why? People with pacemakers would be fully aware already wouldn't they, seeing as it's a safety device that is built in on purpose. That iPads have magnets like all the tablets that copy them is also well known. In fact the ads even make a feature of the magnets.
The only thing that is troubling is why Macrumors is putting such an obvious beat up on the front page.
They wouldn't need to put the magnets inside the iPad if they didn't have the smart cover. Ditch the smart cover and they don't need the magnets. Problem solved.
You know how I know I'm on an Apple fan site?
Cuz you can't go three posts around here without someone mentioning Samsung.
Any kind of magnet or just special "Apple" magnets?![]()
You were placing the iPad on your chest the wrong way.
Just because he's smarter than you doesn't mean you should start accusing people now.
Oh wait. Anything "bad" said about Apple means sneaky no good Samsung is behind it.
Bad Samsung. Bad!
Who else remembers getting the manual with their iPad? Who here has downloaded that manual? Who remembers even getting a LINK to that download in their iPad box.
