Actually, this has already been discovered by at least 6 men over 70 years old. They just didn't live to tell anyone.

It shows that nobody was reading them before. Did you? Nope....

That's completely irrelevant.

The topic was that this girl DISCOVERED something. No - Apple knew this already, and pretty much anyone with a brain knows that magnets cause problems with Defibrillators. There is no DISCOVERY here. Only someone without a brain hoping others without a brain will be shocked.

i can only imagine how he discovered that...

His father's a doctor, with common knowing about magnetic effects on pacemakers, suggested to his kid that it would be an easy project to see how much impact it would have. Doing the test using an Apple product would ensure notoriety and world-wide press.

Seems legit.

Not a discovery. Not news. Just click bait. Anyone at risk (defib wearers) know very well about this. Probably far more likely to be impacted by a magnetic refrigerator seal.

And does this not mean the magnets in my Nexus 7 and it's case can not also produce the exact same results?

No, it means that your Nexus 7 magnets can produce the same results. There's no difference between the magnetic fields eminating from an Apple magnet than any other magnet.

Right on the mark. Because it's Apple the click potential is enormous. The fact that this effect is well known means nothing. The article could have pointed out that any device with magnets could cause this problem but no, it singled out Apple. This was done with forethought and planning.

Isn't that true of any electronic device? Magnets are not good as they interfere with electro magnetic signals. Take a powerful magnet, but it on the back of your phone and watch your iPhone turn off. I really don't think this is a discovery when it is well known and documented.

Then again, not many people would know about it.

This is a non-story....

I have no idea why this is news. My wife works in surgery, and they routinely stop pacemakers with.....wait for it.....magnets! You can't have your pacemaker firing off during surgery, so they shut it down and this is how they do it. Medical magnets, not ipad covers.

It's news because it's apple and apple stories get clicks.

Since when? I know my iPad didn't. Then again - I am still sporting my original iPad.

I stand corrected. But is that manual the same one linked in the post? Does it have the same warnings?

It came with safety documentation

So how did this 14-year old "discover" this if it's written in Apple's safety documentation?

Majority of people don't read those documentations. The person has to read or hear it on the news, or be told about it in person through word of mouth.

Luckily this issue is being brought up to bring this awareness. Last thing we need is someone to die from an Apple device because they fell asleep with it.

Yes this is true, the point of contention is that she did not discover this. It's been well documented for years. It's the wording of the article that is misleading as if this is a shock to the tech world and this 14 year is a whistleblower or something

This is a feature of the icd !!!

ICD, Pacemakers and most active implantable device has this feature, to allow emergency room crews to temporarily turn-off or disable a device using a magnet.

THIS IS A FEATURE OF THE ICD, not a bug.

For a 14-year old to "discover" that a magnet can turn off an ICD, this is a marketing stunt by the dad, who happens to be a doctor, who happens to be an implanter of ICD, and who happen to be familiar with this feature.

What a load of baloney...

Right, attach the word "Apple" or "iPad" or "i-anything" to it, and suddenly it is a front page news story on all news outlets.

Wow......

That was just about the most obnoxious and idiotic 9 pages of comments to one of the most idiotic stories I've read on here.

As someone without a peanut allergy, I don't care to know what has nuts in it and what doesn't.

But someone with a nut allergy does.

As someone on Weight Watchers, I watch what I eat - carefully point the ingredients and make sure I portion my meals well.

Someone who isn't on this program (or me before) wouldn't give a rat's behind.

And someone with a medical device implanted in their chest that regulates their heartbeat better as hell be cautious and know (i.e. read) if there is a magnet or electromagnetic field in whatever they are trying to use.

The rest of us wouldn't care at all.

Why is this news? Why should we care? There's safety documentation available both in the box and online (hell, I bet it's even on the iPad itself somewhere). Just because no one reads it, doesn't mean there aren't those out there who should.

And ignoring a danger because the documentation doesn't slap you in the face is pure stupidity. Man, what a coddled and entitled generation we are.....and its getting worse.

Go listen to Bill Engvall's "Here's Your Sign" stand-up comedy routine.....unfortunately that's the world we live in.....ridiculous.
