Just got done with my Apple Genius Bar appointment. They don't have any parts for these MacBooks yet, also since I have a BTO machine they didn't have any to swap it with. What they did was have me order a replacement machine and then put notes in on my machine I'm allowed to return it late. So basically new machine comes in, I swap my stuff, bring in the broken speaker one for a refund. All and all really not that bad of a deal since I get to keep using mine and I get a new one as a replacement instead of having a repair.

Not sure what caused it, I'm still thinking quality control issue over bootcamp breaking the speakers. I booted into bootcamp and had the same distortion on the left speaker, so I think mine was just bad from the start.

Hope the rest of you get a repair solution that works out for you.

Are you going to go ahead and install bootcamp on your new machine?

Well that's not really a special deal because with the holiday return policy that was mentioned earlier you could return it anyway before jan 8th. I'm planning to do just that. the only thing is, will you be charged again before you are reimbursed?

I was just asking myself the same question!

Just made an account so I could chime in and add myself to the list of victims...

15" $2800 config, was using bootcamp to play a few games, sound at low volumes, for a couple hours when I started hearing the popping. Sure enough, right speaker is blown even when going back over to macOS.

Anyone know if it's possible to avoid the issue if exclusively using the headphone jack while in Boot Camp?

Ok so it is now almost 100% sure that the couse of the problem is Bootcamp.

BUT is there ANY one have the problem without touching Bootcamp/windows ????

If there is.. I'm cancelling my order right now...

Do apple even know this issue? Are they solving them right now?

This is 100% bootcamp. Regular Mac OS does not CAUSE this problem.

Cool, please update this thread if you hear any response, thanks!

Notice that if my right side speaker starts acting up cutting out to just low bass notes (missing higher notes / treble) a reboot will fix, it will work perfect in OSX until i go over 60% volume then at some point randomly cut the right speaker volume in half leaving only the lower bass notes.

In Windows I've noticed that it works about the same volume wise, but in Windows since you can speaker sound test I notice that the speaker test sounds no different at this point though it exhibits the same qualities as in OSX at that time, a reboot it's back to normal again until triggering over 60% volume for some time.

Strange. Wonder from the ifixit teardown that if these are replaceable would it just be a visit at some point to the genius bar to replace. From the looks of it if it is a bad speaker it seems like something field replaceable.
[doublepost=1479623108][/doublepost]Fresh reboot after doing some work in Windows and it's 100% fine right now, I can crank it up and down with some general test left / right audio same volume both sides no issues.

If it was blown / damaged / ruined it shouldn't work and then not and then work again, it should exhibit the broken state all the time if it was blown. Not sure what's up .

How do you fix it?

How do you fix it?

Not sure honestly

- did NVRAM reset (no difference)
- check audio midi setup made sure left / right equal when adjusting volume
- checked speaker config changed from stereo to 2.0 surround back to stereo. It's interesting like Windows if you test it when it's acting wild like that (right side bass / low volume / no treble / low mids) you can go in the test and click each speaker and it sounds equal testing the test white noise tone. In windows the speaker test with stereo or quadrophonic when it exhibits that is the same, normal level audio on each side testing through the audio test tone tool.

So strange, I can't give a specific fix / what's causing it. Right now I'm listening to iTunes no issues, volume like at 40%, pan left and right no issues. Pull up some neutral mono video and pan it sounds exactly the same, crank it a little and still fine right now so I don't know. Give it some time it'll start again and a reboot will immediately get it back to normal again until you adjust volume wrong or listen to something a certain way?? Seriously this is crazy lol

My last reboot in windows test tones were good, listened to iTunes in Windows and did some mono video tests and speakers sounded fine both sides volume wise at like 67% volume, checked some mono videos and test videos sounded normal across the sides. Seriously no clue ack!

I hope it is a software/driver issue only. At least I will still think of installing Windows when they fix it. But if Windows can couse a hardware issue to the speakers I will not even think of installing Windows even after they fix it.

Happened to me in bootcamp a few minutes ago as well, right after I finished doing updates. The right speaker is barely outputting sound now. (15" MBP 2016 - 2.6Ghz, Radeon Pro 460, 512GB).

Im hoping to see some sort of coverage of this on macrumors this week so that apple can get a fix out.

I guess it has something todo with the speakers directly being connected to power now and getting too much energy or something... I am no expert though... ;)

Working fine today in OSX until driving it up to 75% for a full 2 minutes of rock music then right side dropped to just low / bass sound in OSX. Rebooted and back to normal both speakers in OSX (simple reboot). In Windows 10 right now, speaker test tones perfect same both sides in quadrophonic settings. Went to pull up my test video as normal and noted that now currently left speaker is bass / low only and the right speaker sounds perfectly normal completely opposite of what has been happening this entire time! Wierd??

So they swapped place this boot up to Windows, time to reboot again and see what it does .
[doublepost=1479682870][/doublepost]And restarted back to Windows, test tones sound perfect left and right (same volume / tones), test my left and right video for audio and normal both sides. Only thing I did was a reboot, I don't get it AGGGHH

P.S. If you want a easy left / right test audio

I was just asking myself the same question!

I know everyone keeps saying this but I would say to really double check, mine showed the regular 14 day return policy. Not saying you're wrong, but with all matters make sure to have the apple tech enter notes anyway so you don't get into a battle with apple later during a return.

As for bootcamp, yup I'm putting it on my Mac. I mean first I highly doubt this is a driver issue, I was barely in windows, I didn't hear any popping etc as everyone else states. I honestly think this is a quality control issue. Also I've noticed people saying they have 2 very different problems, sound cutting out, and crackling. I would say sound cutting out could be drivers, but the crackling suggests it is bad hardware.

Second I need windows for work. If it truly is bootcamp causing it and apple can't get it together by the time my replacement mac gets here I don't really have any sympathy for that, haha.

For the person who asked about refunding the money before it ships, no, but I chose this path so I could keep my machine. They did offer to return it right there and refund the money and I could buy another, but with a 4 week ship time I chose to keep the machine and get the refund after I get the new one.

Sorry but I don't understand very well if the issue is of someone or everyone who install bootcamp

Whole thing is completely strange, working fine for like 30 minutes of listening at 70% volume in Windows 10 iTunes, then right speaker goes into low / bass sound only. Strange thing is if I go and do the tone test in "quadrophonic" it sound correct not low bass only, if I swap to "stereo" instead it of course test tones fine, strange thing then is if I go play the same audio test both speakers are loud and trebbly. For giggles I went and set it to "surround" which tested fine sound on the test, when i played the audio again both left and right were bass / low sound only. Really strange, it works and it doesn't and it's completely random.

It seems directly related to volumes. In both OSX and Windows I can put iTunes 70-75% and put system volume up to around 70% or little over before it cuts the right to low bass (no highs), if i crank system volume to 90%+ the left will follow suite. A reboot not even 10-15 seconds and back to normal again until I trigger it like that. It can play iTunes all day under those conditions, same with Windows. Sound is normal, no crackling or issues sounds great. Strange.

Like others mentioned it seems like it's some kind of speaker limiter / protection to prevent damage, I notice my volume seems pretty loud even at 50% system on a YouTube video or typical rock song in iTunes with those app volumes set to say 70-75%. Not sure how loud these are suppose to get but I assume much over 75/75 they are pretty loud.

The thing is.. no one who didn't install windows faced the same problem.

Any one guys??

Thankfully this hasn't happened to me even after playing Civ 6 for a few hours. Kinda scared to boot into windows now. Hoping to see some sort of fix soon.
