I also have this problem, totally random crackling.

I also have this issue. Both during start up and randomly during the day. I still don't know if I should replace it or if it's just a software issue.

I just received yesterday a new unit with exact the same problem. This is unbelievable. I don't know what to do anymore.

Just picked up a 13" MacBook Pro non-touch bar and I'm having the same issue... Has anyone reached out to Apple, yet? I'm thinking about taking mine in to see what they say.

At first I thought it was just my finger passing across the headphone port, then it crackled without my hands anywhere near it. Seems to happen randomly, whether the speakers are muted or not; charging or not; display or keyboard brightness is low/high... It may be correlated with CPU activity as it seems to happen more frequently when quitting apps, but I'm at a loss on how to make it stop :(

I have the same problem with the same exact laptop

makes popping noises at random times? is this bad for the actual hardware?

As so many have this issue, and according to some people it helps for a while if you reboot the computer I'm thinking software issue - maybe something wrong with the sound drivers?
I have never used bootcamp but I still think that I have this issue.

I don't know if I have it but I think so, I did hear some "pop" sound sometime from and off.

did you get any good news from apple? i still have the problem.

you guys can login with your AppleID and make a bug report on this link, they 'll take a look at it and then report back to you, so everyone with the issue report it as a bug:
http://bugreport.apple.com/
[doublepost=1487054634][/doublepost]
Is it almost a single click sound, like someone flicked a light switch somewhere and that static pop came across the speaker.

Well then I have it also and I have never used bootcamp.

People please report the bug here: (login with your appleID)
http://bugreport.apple.com/

If many people report it they 'll fix it is my guess I have gotten some bugs investigated trough that link when I reported it.
Make sure to attache a sysdiagnos when you report it also and write down the time when the issue did happen, when you did hear the sound.
Instructions for how to make a sysdiagnos:

Okay. Now I'm having the same issue with my new MBP 13'' non TB. It started this week and the return policy is ended... I'm contacting with Apple Support...

Anyone has any idea?

(Perhaps we should start a new thread for us...)
[doublepost=1487435331][/doublepost]For MBP 13" non TB... Does anyone have a custom machine? For example, mine is 16Gb RAM...

The noise went away for a week or so, but now it's back with a vengeance...I'm fairly confident the notebook is building up a static charge internally. From a cold boot, the "pop," which sounds like an electrostatic discharge, occurs just before the keyboard backlight activates and sometimes again when a current passes through the speakers (e.g., from the sound of an email notification). I think this could be caused by improper grounding or shielding, in addition to environmental circumstances...it's winter here, so the air is cold and dry and more conducive to static electricity.

I was able to get a video of the "pop" during boot and scheduled an appointment with the local Geniuses later this week.

The same sound happens in my MacBook 13". Apple support suggested to do a NVRAM reset. Until now, it doesn't appeared again. But I don't think it solved the issue, as you said the problem disappeared for a while.
Hope we have some explanation of Apple.
Meanwhile, please send me a message if you get news from Genius Bar. I'll make an appointment with Apple next week.

you can make this sound happen, run the CPU so it gets hot. Then just tap the display and it 'll sound like that.
Exactly like that.

Run terminal then write this many times: yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null &
Then your CPU 'll start to go up in temp to exit it just typ: "killall yes" in terminal and ofc push enter.

Then tapp the display like try to close it and you 'll hear that sound.

So what did the genius say about it?

The store was too noisy to hear the arc/pop, but I explained the issue and showed them the video. They seemed to understand and said it could very well be a grounding or shielding issue. The only option they presented was to have it shipped to an off-site repair facility to disassemble it which would take 3-5 days.

Ok, so you did send it away?
If you did please can you tell later if they did fix it?

Can you look when it's build?
You can see it trough the serialno.

09-Jan-2017... directly from China since i ordered it with 16 GB of ram.

i share the same opinion. The problem is somehow related with improper grounding/shielding of the speaker circuit. It's also winter here and noticed it is even worse when the humidity in the air is higher then 90%.

The only way to disconnect the speaker circuit is by connecting a wired headphone. I tried it for an entire week and the pops completely disappeared.

Have you gotten your back?
I did replace my mbp 2016 to a mbp 2015 and guess what, the 2015 mbp has the same issue!

The grounding/shielding is not the issue thats impossible, the logic board are "grounded" with multi "dots".
And if the logic board should not have been grounded you should have been hearing "spark" every time you touch the MBP, almost due to the energy difference between you and the MBP.
And it should happen directly when you started the mbp.

In my case it happens sometime during startup and always on the same "place" in the startup process.
It might be something with the speakers but, the issue here is - why do I have the same issue as you guys? I got a mbp 2015.
Is this maybe something with sierra? That sierra did damage our speakers some way?
But that don't explaine it either as post on the internet says that people have been hearing the pop in Bluetooth headsets also.

I hope I did explain it so you did understand my English are not so good that I can explain this type of stuff.

I did as I did write above change my MBP to a 2015 15" and I also have the issue on that one during start up and sometimes when I'm running macOS - and as far as I know nothing in the 2015 15" are the same hardware as in the 2016 model =/

A grounding and/or shielding issue is certainly possible. If the imbalance is introduced by environmental factors or any other non-constant factor, of which there are many, it won't happen every time you touch the MBP.

It's possible the 2015 and 2016 share similar internal components. I have a 2011 MBP running Sierra and it does not exhibit any of these symptoms.

I hope a firmware update can compensate for the issue because I just received a brand new replacement MBP with the same issue.

Hmmm... I might have some extra info. I also have the problem. I have a MBP 15 with almost all the extras you could get. For me the popping/clicking appears a lot (in 10 seconds i probably hear it 3 times) when I play music or watch movies. I think I've never heard it when just working on my mac. Was about to go to Apple center to get it fixed since I thought there was something wrong with my speakers. But yesterday I discovered that my popping/clicking sound only appears when I don't have my dongle (with mouse) connected. If I connect the dongle the popping disappears. When I disconnect it takes some seconds, then the popping/clicking comes back. Anyone that experience the same thing?

the pop I always get isn't from speakers its the hinge making sound from bottom screen I think its heat makes it pop but yeah I figured it out I can push the screen in the hinge and makes the pop

I have this issue too, from all the different forums that are listing this issue it seems that it is a widespread issue with the design of the screen hinge expanding and contracting from heat. I have my computer at the apple store now for repair (2nd time) and I am preparing to get the computer back with the same issue. We will see.
