Late 2008 2.66 Does Work with 8GB RAM

yes but again "this" is on the late '08 15" UMBP's. the early '09 15" UMBP's (the 2.66 & 2.93) dont seem to have this problem

Actually, after must research, I just purchased a 2.66GB MacBook Pro 15" last week, and ordered 8GB of 1066 PC3-8500 RAM from Other World Computing. Much to my surprise, when I booted my computer, I found that it was a Late 2008, not an Early 2009. I didn't even know there was a Late 2008 2.66 GHz model.

Anyway, I called OWC and spoke with their tech support and the confirmed that the 8GB RAM will work with my model. The RAM arrived on Monday and I have been working just fine.

I run a VMWARE fusion XP VM with 3GB of RAM allocated. My system seems extremely stable and responsive, although most of my work is done on my VM at this point.

will 8GB work on the 2.6 17" MBP's? Mines already installed with 6GB and working flawlessly. But wondered if upping it to 8GB will be ok too

How do you know it's a late 2008? There is no such thing as a late 08 2.66GHz. The 2.66 and 2.93 were introduced in 09.

That's what I thought too. My first clue was when I registered my Apple Care support with Apple and entered the serial number of my MacBook Pro. The verification said "Thank you for registering your MacBook Pro (Late 2008)".

I thought, "what the heck?". Not only did I not think there was such a thing for my 2.66, but I was a bit angry that my brand new PC from CDW was actually 4-5 months old.

Anyway, when I called tech support at Other World Computing, he told me to look at the Hardware Overview under About This Mac. If it said 5,1 then it was Late 2008. If it said 5,2, then it was early 2009. So I went to check and it was 5,1.

Then I asked if the 8GB would work, because even their OWC website didn't have an option for Late 2008 2.66 GHz MBP 15" in their list of computers for which they sold memory. He went away for a few minutes and came back and said that yes, it would work and I recommended that they update their website with the existence of the late 2008 model.

So no chance the 2.53 machines will ever support 8gb? cool apple.

No, but you can get 6GB from Other World Computing for that model. That's still 50% more than you have now and it's only about $200 for that upgrade kit (I think) instead of the $700 I spent for 8GB.

my MBP is the very last of the classic all alu MBP 17's released in october 2008. its a 2.6GHz not an early 2009 2.66GHZ machine.

so still unsure. can anyone confirm?

Can't tell you for sure. I'd call tech support from Other World Computing and ask them. It's not supported by Apple either way, so it's really a question of whether the memory supplier will support their product.

Thanks for this thread...

I have been wrecking my head over this issue for days. Everyone I asked gave me a different answer as to whether or not I could install 8GB Ram in 15" 2.93GHz MacBook Pro.

I just spoke to an Apple tech support guy who confirmed that it would "probably" be okay to install the 8GB in my laptop. This thread gives me added confidence.

Thanks.

I just picked up a 2.66GHz MBP and tech support at OWC is wrong. It says 5,1 also. There is no such thing as a late 08 2.66GHz MBP.
