You buy it because it’s lightweight, fanless, has a larger screen, and comes in cool colors. If you’re worried about processing speeds and saving seconds off of your video file export, buy a Pro.
A 15" MBA isn't going to be any lighter than a 14" MBP though

13" MBA is 2.7 pounds (1.24 kg)
14" MBP (M2 Pro) is 3.5 pounds (1.60 kg)
16" MBP (M2 Pro) is 4.7 pounds 2.15 kg)

15" MBA = 3.6 to 3.9 pounds???

Nothing about this is surprising. We aren't going to get new chips every 12 months or less. 18-24 months is the norm.

Apple wasn't going to introduce the 15" with the M3 while also selling the 13" with the M2. Just like how they wouldn't introduce the M2 Pro in the 14" MBP while gatekeeping the M3 Pro in the 16" MBP.

I don't think we'll see the M3 until early-mid 2024. Before then, we still need to see the M2 go into the iMac as well as the M2 Pro chips in the Mac Studio. We're still missing the Apple Silicon Mac Pro too.

Just curious but why can’t it weigh between 2.7 and 3.5 pounds?

It also might be feasible to compare it to the 16” MBP as well. In terms of pounds per inch of screen real estate, the 15” MBA might still come out on top.

A 13" MBA M2 8-core/8-core with 16GB / 512GB is $1599
A 13" MBA M2 8-core/10-core with 16GB / 512GB is $1699
A 14" MBP M2 Pro 10-core/16-core with 16GB / 512GB is $1999

A 15" MBA M2 8-core/10-core with 16GB / 512GB will probably put this at $1999

If so, wouldn't it then make better sense to just get a 14" MBP instead?
15" will only be $100-200 more expensive

Apples computer sales dropped 24% in the first quarter of this year alone.THATS THE HIGEST SINGLE QUARTER DROP OF ANY PC MANUFACTURER IN HISTORY.
The high prices for products that are not worth the money, the lack of upgradability…. People are leaving apple in droves and it’s showing.
Apple needs a re evaluation and to fire Tim Cooke.

Forgive if I'm being dense, but this doesn't prove the m3 isnt coming in the 15" air, rather the m3 isn't increasing in cores/ram, correct?

Correct, not sure why Gurman pushed it in the M2 way other than trying to stick with his past statements.

I'm just dreaming of Tim Cook saying....and one more thing, and pulls out an updated sub two pound 12" MacBook with a M3 chip...yes, I know, it's time to wake up!

8GB RAM, in 2023!

Steve is laughing in his grave
Microsoft still offers 8gb for the base Surface and an extreme upgrade cost, but apparently (from my experience) it's more efficient with Windows, for some reason.

There are others.

Maybe Apple would actually move more merchandise if they didn't overcharge for memory and SSD. I would have bought any number of Mac Minis, or Laptops on the spot if I could buy one that made sense, as 8gb doesn't.

13" MBA already weighs 2.7 lbs. How is Apple going to keep the 15" MBA at the same 2.7 lbs?

Going up 2-inches in screen size from 14" MBP to 16" MBP added 1.2 lbs

I would think that going up 2-inches in screen size from 13" MBA to 15" on MBA would add about 1.0 lbs, plus or minus say 0.2 lbs. That would put a 15" MBA between 3.5 lbs and 3.9 lbs.

What is never mentioned but is of real interest to me is the WEIGHT. The latest Air is sweet at just under 14" and the weight is good. There is no doubt that the 15", with the same M2, would be nice but at what addition in weight? That is why I left the 14" PRO... weight. Anybody else in this concern category?
A 15" MacBook Air would probably weigh in at around the same weight as the 14" MBP at 3.5 lbs. That's about the lowest you can get a 15" laptop using an aluminum chassis. Laptops made with magnesium alloy chassis can save some weight but the material is significantly more expensive and many users complain it feels like plastic so it's less "premium." If Apple didn't switch the 13" MBA to magnesium I doubt they'd do so with the 15".

Well that's disappointing, no M3 chip on the big boy
Even though the 15.5" screen would be on a larger MBA, Its not universal appealing to all laptop buyers. A 2021 M1 Pro 14" or 16" MBP has 6 way speakers and mini-LED displays. They are on sale these days, compared to this years M2 14"/16" MBPs. So the base model of the M1/M2/M3 SoC are just like the cheapest SoC to put into laptops. M3 being somewhat faster than M2, but not compared to more capable Pro/Max SoCs.

A 15" MacBook Air will only be $100-$200 more expensive than a comparable 13" MacBook Air? Even when the 15" MacBook Air is reported as having the same 3024-by-1964 resolution as on the 14" MacBook Pro as opposed to the 13" MacBook Air's 2560-by-1664 resolution?

I'll believe it when I see it.

Price difference betwen 14" MBP and 16" MBP with similar specs is $200 difference. Even at $1899 for a 15" MBA with similar memory and storage specs to a $1999 base 14" MBP, the 14" MBP seems like the better buy for $100 more to me.

I said between those two ranges. Also, it’s possible the cooling system and batteries of the 16” accounts for a good portion of that weight.

Ok. So you think Apple can do some magic and make a 15" MBA 2.75 lbs?

2.75 lbs is between 2.7 lbs and 3.5 lbs

Right. And that's why I said going up 2-inches from 13" MBA to a 15" MBA would add about 1.0 lbs (plus or minus 0.2 lbs) instead of the 1.2 lbs like on 16" MacBook Pro.

And do you not think a 15" MBA will have a larger and therefore heavier battery than a 13" MBA?
