That is messed up for anyone that recently got the top of the line $7,000 Macbook Pro back in August. I am sure they would have wanted this option included.

But there were no vega mobile back then, so choose, you want frequent updates or one every few years? There is no way around, it's funny tho, you can't make everyone happy but you can make everyone sad.

Why should it be?

You payed and bought for the product at that time for the current price at that time. It is with everything like that. At one point you decide to buy or to wait. If you have to wait until the next revision or model you never have to buy anything :)

I also don’t understand why some Apple consumers say a 2600 dollar product is deprecated or obsolete when the next one comes out with only a few minor changes. It is not like the iPhoneX is total crap and stops working now the the XS is out...

Good, but I wonder if they shouldn't make room for better cooling first - no point in having the best in class GPU if it's going to be throttled like the CPUs are.

Also, isn't it a little weird to have this sort of high-end GPU option available with only 4 GB of memory ?

It's not GDDR memory so it's not weird.

I miss Nvidia options.

I don't miss sending it back 3 times to fix the GPU thou buddy

Any comparisons between:

a) Mac Mini with the best external GPU.
vs.
b) MBP with Vega 20 GPU.

Anyone knowledgeable on this...?

If you want raw performance go for Mini + external eGPU due to cooling efficiency... But obviously if you want mobility the MBP is your only option.

*cough* Nvidia *cough*

Nvidia doesn't have any better options with similar wattage. And they certainly don't have mid-range GPUs with HBM2...

The Mini + external GPU is going to be much faster obviously.

There has been a lot of back and forth about eGPU's with the new mac mini. But, do they perform the same as internal GPU's, or is there a performance hit?

Although it is anecdotal, reviews on apple store are mixed as to them working.

Does anyone have useful experience with eGPU that can share?

I looked on the AMD website to see if they put the specs of these new GPU’s up to see relative performance but it’s not up yet. All they have are the 400 and 500 series and Vega for iMac pro, interesting

Bummer. I bought the first day the 2018s were bumped, maxed out the machine and unfortunately, the MacBook Pro is still slower than my 2016 iMac which has the M395X GPU that was the top of the line at the time. The iMac is still faster at Lightroom and Final Cut Pro than my top of the line MacBook Pro. The gap is very slim but it's still noticeable. I wish these options were available at the time of ordering this machine because it would have meant I could sell my iMac and use just the MBP.

Sure, OK. But which is the current best external GPU? And what are the benchmark figures like for each?

Your signature says you got the 1TB option, rather than the 4TB, which is the "maxed out" model; with RAID'd 2x2TB SSD.

I use a Radeon RX 580 in a Razer Core X with my 15" MacBook Pro 2017 daily. It's great. I highly suggest going for something like this over the black magic and other premade solutions, since you will want to upgrade your GPU someday, and buying a new enclosure every time doesn't make sense.

I haven't ran benchmarks to see if there would be a dramatic difference between internal/external performance, but I can say it runs very well as I expect.

The eGPU keeps the laptop much cooler. I do fairly heavy 3d game development. Using the internal GPU, my laptop gets to 70 degrees or so. Using the eGPU, it sits around 45 degrees instead.

All in all I strongly recommend eGPUs for Mac users that need graphics power. It solves two of the biggest Mac hardware problems; heat and hardware options.

Honestly, I often wish I got a 13" MBP instead of the 15" - I didn't expect I'd use an eGPU this often, and the 15" seems to have more problems.

So tempting but what I really need is that i9 with 32GB of RAM, 1TB SSD and Vega options on a tricked out 5K iMac. Should be cheaper, faster, and suit my need for a desktop form factor better than plugging this into an existing display. I kinda think the reason they haven't updated the iMac is because they have no idea what to do with the GPU and if they put that i9 into it, there isn't a lot of difference between that and the lower end iMac Pro aside from it being cheaper. I think they're repositioning the iMac so that it has crap specs that many professionals will avoid. I mean for crying out loud, the iPad Pro is as fast as the iMac now.

I have just purchased a high spec 15" MacBook Pro around 4 weeks ago.... £3700 or so... So should I be upset by this... ? also I use VM all day normally... I am very interested in feedback?
If it is within 30 days of a new model being released you can usually go to the apple store and have it exchanged for the new model. That is if you got it from apple. I don’t know if this is still a thing but it doesn’t hurt to try if your curious.

You're best going to eGPU.io if you want to know what's the best eGPU. I'd hazard a guess (for MacOS at least) is the AMD Vega 64. Both the MacBook Pro and Mac Mini (in theory) support up to 4 external GPUs, via the 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports. So the question really is, how much are you willing to spend?

I don’t think u should. Imo anything that DEMANDS better than the 560x (and even 555x) is likely to require an egpu for a significant upgrade. I do think that the vega 20 might be worth it but for the price it implies, an egpu might be even better value for money.

Compared to full on desktop PCs with PCI slots one tends to lose about 20% GPU performance using an eGPU with the same chip. Compared to mobile GPUs though the eGPU can be much faster. Useful site here- http://barefeats.com/macbook-pro-13in-2018-with-egpu.html

I'm one of those people... That said, I would go back to an iMac. Without an official Apple monitor, it is way clunkier and buggy compared to my old Air on a Thunderbolt Monitor. I've had to hard restart this MacBook more times in the last 3 months, than I have on all previous Macs I've owned. Only have the issues when connecting to the 3rd party LG monitor.
