In OS X the normal setting places the processor in "automatic" mode. This means it scales the processor speed to meet the requirements of whatever task is at hand. If the computer is just sitting there, then the processor is already scaled down. Lets hope that the Intel power management is very efficient. I know I shouldn't complain, after all, my 1GHz 12" barely gets 3.5hrs. and I'm guessing it's at least 6 times slower.

Well, Mine and my friend's MBP arrived in Anchorage at 12:02 and left at 1:58, so clearly it was cleared by customs. And seriously, does anyone honestly think that customs can shut down for a day? Are you really trying to say that no products OR people come or leave the US on holidays?

Customs for people is completely different than that of merchandise. Because package "A" on a shipment was passed through customs has nothing to do with package "B"... even if they were on the same inbound plane. My sister deals in international furniture manufacturing and part of a shipment will routinely get parked for a day or two around holidays. Remember that these are government employees, most take every holiday off.

I'm reading the MacBook Pro service manual-and it says that the Intel Core processor is soldered and isn't upgradable.
Wow lets just say thats "non masculine".

Duff-Man says..well, I just took the plunge and ordered a 1.83 from my fave reseller - he says I should get in on the first shipment he receives. Now....must get some extra ram and decide what to do with the ol' 15" 867 TiBook....oh yeah!

i know this is a stupid question but does anyone know if i could use 512mb ram I took out from intel imac to go with 1gb ram in MBP? someone said I can only use the same sized one before....

Yes you can. If you go to order memory they use the same memory.

You may have to change your sig then. :p

Shutting a core off

Hi mac fanatics,

I dont post very often but I read the rumors everyday!

I just wanted to know if anyone knew if its possible to like shut one of the cores of the core duo off for example to save battery or when youre on the move on the MBP.

The reason why im asking is because before the MBP was launched, i heard a lot of people saying that this was possible on the Yonahs.

Maybe the reason why Apple hasnt posted battery life is because maybe they are still developing some sort of software or powermanagement thing to shut one of the cores off? And then it may be available in a update of some kind?

Thanks!

Is the writing REALLY backwards?? IM CONFUSED.

Dude...the pic was taken via a camera (most likely the built-in iSight in the MBP), so the writing was reversed.

Sorry you got confused by the rampant amounts of sarcasm...there needs to be a smily for sarcasm...:)

EDIT Wow, I just realized that this was from waaaaay back...'pologies.

Damned! And I thought it will be possible to swop it for a Merom

I would take the previous statement of the core do being soldered with a grain of salt. So far only two people have confirmed having a MacBook Pro and up until yesterday everyone at apple tech/customer support had no clue what was going on - so how would you expect an Apple service manual to be available online to the public.

Also take into account that Apple has never said that a processor was upgradable even though they were out there for the daring & those willing to void there warranty.

Wow seeing all these 'birthing' photos is getting me real excited myself.. Gah, April 1st now feels so far off!

Customs does not clear the shipment in Alaska

Actually, Fed Ex does not have US Customs clear the shipment until they get to the lower 48 (to Indianapolis or Memphis). Whilst in Alaska they either simply refuel the jets for their forward journey or the cargo containers stay in a bonded area prior to reloading. So the Anchorage turnaround is usually very quick.

The wait goes on

Well it's officially 72 hours since I could not cancel my order, CC still shows auth but no charge yet, status is still "not yet shipped". Looks like it may be a while. Ordered a 1.83 with 2gigs ram and 7200 on 1/15 got updated to 2.0 on 14th. So much for getting excited about getting it this week, maybe I will get it by 28th which is the original ship date. I cant believe I am doing this! I need to return the Intel 17" iMac I picked up on the 24th (it was a returned item so wont have to pay 10% restock) I have had fun with it while it lasted. Actually not a bad machine.

Even if it was socketed, that's not going to happen. New generations of processors are never backwards-compatible in the Intel world. Even moving from one generation of Pentium 4 to the next requires a new motherboard, even if it uses the same socket, because of voltage differences. Not to mention Intel's penchance for changing sockets (Pentium-M and Core Duo use two different sockets, for no good reason.)

That said, it's extremely likely that Merom will use a faster front-side bus, so even if the socket and voltage were 100% compatible, you'd need a chipset that supports the faster bus. Intel has never added bus speeds in a firmware update, only a whole-new chipset.

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: Yes, but it won't be as big an improvement as getting a same-size stick.

It will work, but the MBP (as the iMac) supports dual-channel memory. This means that memory speed doubles if you use the same capacity memory module in each socket. So you will get the improvement of 1.0->1.5 GB of memory, but the computer will run faster if you use two of the same size module. (Yes, it is conceivable for it to be faster with two 512 MB modules totalling 1 GB, than with 1.5 GB of mismatched memory.)

I Can't Wait Until Wednesday Morning!! I'll be missing school that afternoon also. Oh well.

I believe you are the first, and only, person I've heard that upgraded to a 120GB 7200 rpm drive. The best Apple could do for me was a 100 GB 7200 drive, who did you have to sleep with to pull that off?;)

Sorry, my bad Plecky! Of course it is a 5400rpm. The reason I mistakenly wrote down 7200 is because it took me 2 days to decide if I should go for the 100GB 7200RPM or the 120GB 5400rpm. I figured space and battery time was just a little more important to me than the extra 1800rpm so I opted for the 120GB. Anyways, still waiting!

Woo-hoo! Due Friday.

Just got my shipping notification. Shipped 2/21, due 2/24. FedEx says it was picked up at 2:28PM local time, but that was after the FedEx cutoff. What the!? 2:30 pm is too late? Damn, a little earlier, and I might have had it on Thursday.

SHIPPED THIS AM!!!!!! delivery by friday, awsome since they said it wouldn't ship till next week!!!! Reminder 1.83-->to 2.0, the only upgrade I took was 5400rpm to 7200rpm 100g HD

Is the 7200rpm 100g HD upgrade really worth it? What increase in performance does one actually get?
I read earlier that the rpm was not a good benchmark. What is?

NO Unless it is always plugged in it pulls about double the power vs the 5400RPM and a 7200 RPM Laptop Hd does not show too much improvement untill you get to the 16MB cache
