NO Unless it is always plugged in it pulls double the power vs the 5400RPM and a 7200 RPM Laptop Hd does not show too much improvement untill you get to the 16MB cache

Really?! I didn't consider this. I'm planning on running Ableton Live 5 on it, which is already Intel Mac native, and then eventually Logic Pro ... anyone else have any thoughts on this? 7200 drives are usually essential in music production, but with the battery life as it stands perhaps I should save my money and take an external 7200 drive for when doing the more demanding stuff (i.e. using Ableton as a DJ interface to play out, or intensive work in Logic).

The question is, does the MacBook Pro have so much power that the 5200 drive is enough?

Peace.

PS When I said battery life a it stands, I don't know what that is of course!!! But I'm guessing it's around 3.5 hours tops while running applications like Ableton.

Last time i checked the 7200RPM drive only needed more current to spin up but when it's spinning the power requirments are almost identical to the 5400RPM drives out there. Then again it's been a while so i could be wrong but if needs be i'll look up the details again.

If you read factory specs of the laptop 7200 drives vs. those of the 5200 drives you'll see this is not the case. Worst case it's 10% extra draw, not 100%. Also if you read the Barefeats benchmark http://barefeats.com/hard61.html you'll see there is a nice performance improvement.

I am a computer tech and my under standing is that yes it does require double to start and about 50-65% more power to keep the disk spinning im sorry but just look at the amps they pull that is not starting that is the running and my macmini has one i got it is a 100 7200 RPM it pulls 1.35 amps while the stock 80 5400 pulld around .5 or .6 amps!!!
So that is where i got my numbers

I may be wrong b/c i know i am not perfect. besides i mainly fix Desktops but am fixing more and more Laptops

the 100 is a samsung 1 year old in 4 weeks!
the 80 is a seagate

FYI I dont have my mac mini listed b/c the admins get ticked off because my sig is so long???? Why i dont know!'
Those of you with MBPs what brand HD is in there to findoout go to the apple logo>about this mac>More Info...>Hardware>ATA/S-ATA? THEN COPY THE NAME/NUMBERS AND POST THEN thanks!

does anyone know if it is sitting at the local facility at 7:30 am, is it likely to be delivered on the same day?

Love those shots from the Orp Koobcam's iSight. Imagine if they could be set up to take a snapshot the very first time the laptop is opened - I'd imagine the facial reactions you'd see would be priceless! :p

it's on my way this morning. it should be here within 1-2 hours.

i will post what i see on the battery life.

I'd say it's possible. It all depends what time the delivery vans leave the depot. It could have missed the delivery for today.

Write (avg.) 2.0W 2.3W
Active idle (avg.) 1.1W 1.2W
Low power idle (avg.) 0.85W 0.9W

Travelstar 5400RPM

Shipping via TNT

As a UK customer I'm quite supprised (annoyed/ungratefu) that mine Isn't due until friday. Granted it has to travel further then just across the pacific, but the state of my package tracking is confusing:

Update 1:
20 Feb 2006 - 18:39 - Shanghai - Shipped From Originating Depot

Update 2:
19 Feb 2006 - 14:22 - Shanghai - Consignment Received At Transit Point

This reversal of dates throws me off... I'm unsure if it was recieved at the transit point before it was sent? Or maybe it was actually sent on its journey to me from the "originating depot" on the 20th. Either way, I have no clue where (or when) mine is. :p

It says 3:31, with Normal consumption settings.

... That's surely what my PB G4 1.5 GHz says when the batteries are recharged, too. The highest "it says" was 3:50 h, last week.

Hi Guys, i've been following this thread with great interest and i have to be honest i'm pretty jealous seeing all these posts from people saying their macbooks have been shipped or even out for delivery today. I'm from the UK and i ordered the 1.67 version with no upgrades on Jan 11th. My estimated ship date is February 28th, but i was wondering if anyone has any more info of whether it will ship before then? Do you think it will go out this week?

It should go out sometime this week... keep in mind Apple said in their Press Release that they were shipping the original 1.83GHz laptops last week and would begin shipping the original 1.67GHz ones this week.

I'm UK and ordered standard 2.0 (1.83) on Jan 12th, though it was through my HE store. AFAIK the 1.83's are a couple of days behind in the shipping though I'm probably wrong, just that everyone here seems to be going for and receiving the 2.0.

I expect it will look something like this. (this an intel imac to france), except that yours will go to london after argnem rather than lyon. So, i think to europe it's TNT, and don't worry - it's by air!!
