I have the same 12" PB. I think I can survive another year or so. Right? I sure do hope so. :)

Because I don't have 15" MBP money. :(

I can't wait for our MacBook Pro demo model!

MacBookPro shipping for 24/02/2006

Hi all!

I should receive, in France, my MacBook Pro for the 24/02. I have received a mail from Apple and my command have been updated on the apple store. My initial shipping date was 28/02 for a delivery the 6/03, now the MBP is shipped and the delivery is for the 24/02. Thanks Apple!

My 2.16 CTO MBP has shipped!

YES! My MacBook Pro 2.16 w/1 gig Ram and 7200/100GB Hard Drive has officially shipped Today, Sunday, Feb. 19! Whoever said about the 2.16's not shipping was dead wrong, I ordered about 2:20 P.M. (PST) on Jan. 10, called on Feb. 14 to ask a fine young (old?) man (@ Apple Customer Service) to update my current order to 2.16 so I wouldn't lose my place in line, and of today it has been shipped. If anybody does not believe and wishes to see the proof in a screen shot, just ask. I am jumping for joy as I'm sure many have you have seen me and my bad grammar/spelling all over these MacBook Pro forums! The only downside is if battery life does become unspectacular, no canceling the order now. Here's hoping for the best and being super excited in the mean time!:D

Excellent points, Aiden. Better hope he's not trying to download anything over wireless, at the same time :)
Actually, with Centrino, isn't that a software radio? So wireless might affect the processor's ability to do other crunching, also?
The "Centrino" radio is an Intel 2100/2200 Mini-PCI card - so it's not a software radio.

The radio does use electricity (as does BlueTooth). It does take some CPU cycles to do networking protocols, so that could add some extra electrical load if the CPU isn't already at 100%.

Another big power draw is the backlight - so if he's watching the DVD in the sunlight with the screen at max brightness it will kill the battery faster than with the screen at dim.

And the RAM needs power, so a 2 GiB MBP would get a little less battery life than a 1 GiB one...

Sounds like every PC manufacturer is scrambling for duo allocations. I know Dell is in a bad position with their single core XPS series!

I ordered a 2 GHz M170 for $1995, but unloaded it due to slowness issues, and no 64 bit support!

I think I will try a macbook pro duo!

MacBooks are using Yonahs that don't have 64-bit support either. Notice how the subject has been dropped from Apple about 64-bit.

Battery life

Isn't it strange that the no one knows anything about the battery life, while the macbook pro is already shipping (mine was shipped today :) )? Hasn't anyone received (or even seen) one yet so that the battery life could be tested?

I think the only people who have rec'd MBPs are inside the gates of Cupertino and they ain't telling. Just a hunch that Apple isn't going to announce battery life for the Rev A ever. New machine + new battery = inconclusive results. Remember, the unit they showed at MW was only a prototype demo unit.

Apple has gone from demo to shipping unit in about a month. There is no way they could have any solid battery life times in that period. Obviously prelim tests much show that battery life will be similar to the last PB or Jobs wouldn't have made that statement, but prelim data isn't stuff you want to publish because too many people will pretend "prelim" means final, just like they too "estimated shipping by" to mean "actual shipping date."

how are people who ordered after me getting theirs shipped first?! did pre-loading iWork set me back like 5 years?!

You are probably correct - probably no one has received MBP yet (I mean, no one without a NDA)

Still, I find it strange that Apple doesn't comment on battery life now, when in no time (hours? or couple of days?) blogs will be full of "unofficial battery life specifications". Why don't they want to be the ones who sets the "mental image" on battery life?

Anyways - I would guess that those unofficial reports on battery life will be more reliable than Apple official specs ;)

I also feel sorry for the people who decided not to go with the 2.16 because of shipping time, or those who were convinced by wrongly-informed people who told others not to change because of long shipping times. Luckily our rebellious ways paid off eh? Shipping March 16 my butt:p

Yeah, bad move on Apple's part. They lost lots of extra sales.

For those who shipped on Feb 19th, have you gotten a message saying it was picked up after the cutoff, or has it even been picked up yet?

Feb 20, 2006
1:10 AM Picked up SHANGHAI CN Package received after FedEx cutoff

1:10 AM Left origin SHANGHAI CN

Feb 19, 2006
3:07 PM Package data transmitted to FedEx

My credit card is showing a hold on it that directly corresponds to the price of my 15" Pro Book.... but my ship date is still saying it is the 28th.

Trust me I know there are many other questions I personally would like to ask but they will take time to be answered where this is just a yes or no, time & setup involved is non-existant.

It is not a deal breaker or anything but I haven't heard any mention of a differing track pad than that of previous 15" powerbook models, while the images online lead to the contrary.

Sorry to waste anyones time I just figured it would be a simple yes/no if anyone has one.
Again, I will point you to....:http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/design.html:)

If we're talking about things we want to know from the soon to be proud recipients of the MBPs, then it has to be:

  • Battery Life
  • Wirelss Reception
  • Usefulness of Front Row
  • Speed differences compared to PBs
  • Speed difference to 2.0GHz iMac Duo due to GPU

-Battery life, we will see, but I'm thinking it may actually be decent.

-Wireless will be better than before.

-I think the usefulness of Front Row is Given. With the ability to access all your media with a key stroke is great. The remote might not be as useful to some people, but it also works with Keynote, and you can use it to wake you computer if for instance it is connected to a TV.

-I am guessing speed under Rosetta to be comparable to a 1.5 PowerBook. May depend on configuration and applications.

-Some people with iMac 2.0s already have 256MB, so I guess we could ask them what speeds they are getting since they are the same exact specs.

As I stated earlier, we have just got in our Sony and Toshiba Core Duo models. It appears that supply issues have partly been to blame for all the manufacturers shipping dates.

The Sony is so tempting in price and spec, but it ain't a Mac, has slower DDR2 and a 4200rpm disc. That's not to mention the crappy plastic casing. It does have 256MB VRAM, 160GB disc and double layer support though. All in all, I will add another 1GB to my stock unit and it will end up costing me about £1350, still worth it though.
