I don't think I have ever seen so much confusion in all my time in mac rumors lol... I guess no one really knows... I just cant believe I am stuck with this 15" laptop and another week on the return policy...…. but then what would I use between?? ugh

I'd say, just use your Mac. Also, you are not stuck with anything if you still have a week to return it. Just return it, wait for the newest thing to drop, and use another Mac in the meantime. Easy.

If you don't have an extra Mac, can't you use your iPad Pro until the 16" ships in Oct/Nov? If not, and if you only have the one Mac to work on, then it seems only logical to keep your fully functional MBP and use it. Also make sure you invest in AppleCare+ if you haven't already.

Chasing the newest thing is a lost cause in IMHO. Because there will always be something new. Upgrades and innovations never stop.

oh, this is not chasing a new thing IMO, this will be a completely new product line up, the fact they are d/c the 15" means value will plummet!

Yeah I wouldn't agree with the whole "there's always something new coming" logic when it's a substantially redesign that only happens 3-4 years, especially with the upgraded keyboard being a big part of the design.

Problem is, we currently don't know any of this. Substantial redesign? Maybe, maybe not. Here's what seems most likely: 1) 16" screen and 2) scissor-style keyboard. If true, great! However not exactly groundbreaking innovation in my opinion.

You can bet if they are doing any type of a redesign there will be a bunch of internal improvements. I'd put money down that betting cooling is going to be an advertised benefit of the new design. Just that change will boost performance a good amount if the CPU/GPU can breathe better. I'm sure the LCD will be upgraded as well, maybe 120hz? At the very least they will probably sprinkle some screen tech in from the pro monitor.

So better keyboard, better cooling, most likely better screen, probably FaceID, and probably a updated Touch Bar. I'd say that's a pretty substantially update. This is a laptop after all and they don't really change that much even with big redesigns.

Apple has clearly changed they way they approach the Mac in the last year. They are updating Mac's left and right when the new chips are available instead of waiting for the annual refresh. They are releasing a technically impressive Mac Pro and new Pro monitor (clearly real Pro level devices, but it still shows the new design logic of pushing for performance instead of fancy aesthetic design). They cleaned up the MacBook lineup and released a fantastic base model 13" pro that finally gives consumers a great balance of performance and value. There are finally good things happening here and I'm excited to see the future of the lineup.

Those potential improvements sound great to me, I hope Apple rolls them out. However if they do, it does sound like it's going to be way more expensive than the current 15". I'd love to be wrong.

Also, FYI, I am really excited for this new laptop, I don't mean to sound too cynical. I can't wait to see what they roll out!

We will see. Lots of conflicting information about this release, but with all the reports of the 15" being retired this year, I'd assume the 16" will slot in where the 15" is now, but we won't know until the release. I don't think the 15" would be dropped and replaced with a 16" starting at 3k, just doesn't make sense. The 3k model would have to be a "pro pro", but if the 15" is being discontinued that doesn't work. So maybe a minor price bump on the 16" when it takes the 15" slot. Nothing about the 16" rumors really seem to scream needing a 3k starting price to me. It sounds to me like a new 15" replacement that just happens to have a 16" screen due to the smaller bezels.

I don't think the value of the 15" will plummet because it's discontinued. The 17" is still held in very high regard and has been discontinued for some time.

If the value of a current 15" plummets (and I think it will), I think it will be because of the keyboard. A 4 year keyboard replacement program isn't that long. A 3.5 year old current generation MacBook would have to be spectacularly cheap for me to risk purchasing that and then potentially being out of pocket $800 (or whatever it is) for a replacement keyboard in 6 months.

But being discontinued - why would that matter?

It reads like you’ll be happier returning the current model and waiting. Hope the new machine turns out to be all you hope for.

I just can’t see how Apple will refresh it this year when they just refreshed the whole 13” and 15” line up. I could see it happening at WWDC next year, but, don’t get me wrong, the sooner it comes out the better.
