I'm going to go against the grain and say I'm not so sure a 16 GB would be fine for the OP judging by the very little info he gave us. Having a Palm Pre really doesn't say how much he'll use the iPhone cause he could find that the iPhone is a lot more useful for different things he never really used the Pre for (different enough devices that I don't think he can necessarily base what he's going to use on that).

OP...
1. Would you like your phone to have your music on it? Even if you have an ipod, it could be nice just to have your music with you just in case (or if you want to use your phone as an alarm to have the music to wake up to with some 3rd party apps, or go to sleep to cause it does have a sleep ipod timer, or use to listen to as you use other functions on it for car use (for example if I plug my iphone into my car's speakers to take advantage of voice turn by turn instructions I have to use it for music if I want music as well).

If any of that sounds enticing, you might want to consider how large your mp3 collection is.

2. Do you plan on using the GPS as a GPS? Does it sound nice to have it in case you need directions (I will tell you I find it highly useful to have a GPS with me w/out having to purposely bring one but just have it on you)? If so, you may want to consider one of the apps that includes the maps (not just uses maps on the internet) for when you don't have cellphone coverage.

If that sounds good to you, I'll warn you those apps that come with the maps are quite large (I have Navigon and it's almost 2 GBs by itself).

3. Does gaming at all or treating your iphone like a "gameboy" at all sound like something you do? Game apps can really eat up storage space (a lot of the ones with nice graphics can be 500 MBs or more. Even a lot of 250 MBs one can quicky eat up space).

4. Apps themselves, even ones that aren't as big as games, can really add up. If you like the idea of always having an app functionality on your phone just in case (me) , you will find they take up space. If you are pretty good about going, don't use that app, get it off my phone (like my roommate who is boggled at how filled up my 32 GB is), you might do well with a 16 GB

Anyways, those are the four big things that I can see that would eat up space that some one might discover their iphone is really good for that has never had one before. I'm sure there are other things but those are what are in my experience the big eaters of space on my iPhone (I have a 32 GB 4 with 5GBs left. ANd honestly, my music collection is only 5.6 GBs of that).

I wouldn't recommend a 16 gb to anyone technologically inclined. I already have three gigs filled with apps and I have almost no music on it so far. It's a whole two days old. I have a 32 gig but I think by the time the next model comes out I will be ready to go to 64 gig.

What if 1) You (plan to) use iTunes Match, 2) You plan on using it as a GPS w/cached maps occasionally, 3) Aren't a gamer and don't plan on having many?

16, 32, or 64?
Impossible to even attempt to answer with the info you've provided. Keep in mind -- there's no such thing as too much storage space. You have to figure out how to balance your storage needs versus budget and other considerations.

No other intended usage? Again, you need to consider all your storage needs.

iTunes Match doesn't relieve you of the need for space. Music is still downloaded to your device.

Bloody hell, do you really only get 57 out of a 64 model?! I can't believe this sort of advertising isn't under much closer scrutiny.

Well you have to remember the OS eats up some of that room for itself. Plus you have the reserve on the card for when sectors go bad.

All in all your first post answers your own question. You have an 8gig pre and are having zero issues with it so 16 gigs would be fine.

What tends to eat up the most room are your music and if any video files like TV shows. On my Atrix the internal storage I use for music and the external SD card I use to swap around movie files.

The phone probably has 64GB of flash memory in it, its just that some of it would be taken up by the operating system and the default apps that you can't delete. So its not false advertising.

I'm well aware of that but 7 GB below is a huge loss, considering the price of NAND memory. It really ought to be more closely marketed to the true value you get.

Special order 128gb!

I got the 16 tho I was thinking about 32 but I have 100gbs of music and 50gb+ of movies. No way any iphone can hold that. So I decided to just save the $200 bucks and buy a Kindle Fire or save up for a used ipad 2 16gb.

I went with the 64gb, I like to have an assortment of music with me and won't be using iTunes in the cloud as I sort my music by release date.

The other reason I am considering a 16 gig is I have a 32 gig iPad 2... So as far as media goes, I plan on watching video content (movies/TV) on that.

Also, not sure how much video I plan on taking with the phone. I'm more of a photo guy, but more than anything I am more of an "I like to experience things in life in real life, not through an LCD" guy.

I keep debating myself. Since I have this feeling that the next iteration of the iPhone will have LTE, which is apparently going to be a huge boost on Verizon, I think I'll go cheap with a 16GB model. I use my iPhone less and less for things like Angry Birds and watching video now that I have an iPad. The apps on there now take up about 5GB -- 1.26 of that is GPS -- and I can get by on much less music. I can especially get by on less music with iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match. I mean I got by on an 8GB iPhone for more than a year, and I spent $800 on a 64GB iPad to have tons of storage space.

I honestly doubt I'd be considering an upgrade had my iPhone 4 not died. But it did, and while my old 3GS is still a good phone, the battery life sucks and the pictures and videos from the camera are just crap compared to the iPhone 4.

I was thinking of upgrading

After having the 32gb just a day, I was thinking of upgrading, but.

I have always had the 32gb version and didn't hit the limit but was thinking what with the much improved camera specs and the 1080p video that I MIGHT need more space. So, I was about to go back to the apple store and upgrade (I'm sure they'll do this for us) and those extra 32GB on the 64GB are 50% OFF!!!

but, I started looking over my apps (I really like how the ios 5 information screen shows all the app detail and what did I find.

Well, I had four GPS navigation apps, when I really only need the one. I had a bunch of games that I honestly haven't played with in about 2 years, I had a bunch of video podcasts that I NEVER WATCH on my phone, so I deleted all those items and boom, I only was using 10GB now instead of the 22GB that I had been before.

So, while the extra 100$ get you an extra 29GB worth of space instead of the extra 14GB that the upgrade from 16-32 gets, I figure I can probably make do with the 32GB version for the next 1-1.5 years.

Ok, first, sorry but you hit a peeve with number 1,

1) Why does everyone think itunes match or even the regular itunes *SYNCHING* is going to save them space? It's not streaming, it's synching. Which means if you want to listen to the song on your phone, you will have to have it downloaded onto your storage space. And honestly, I'm sorry, but I think it would be a pain to download song I want to hear, erase it when I'm done, then download the next. Better to just have the space for all the songs I want to hear.

That peeve out of the way...

Exactly. I wasn't arguing that he should get the 64 GB. I was arguing that he should think about those things that he may not have thought about when he was considering what he'd use the iPhone for so that he could see what other things he migh need space for. Yeah, if he has no use for a GPS with dedicated maps that's not an issue (basically if he never travels into very rural areas or takes a dedicated GPS if he does do stuff like that). If he's not a gamer that is not an issue (though it still could be if he starts saving a lot of apps to his phone. Even without games apps can add up. especially if he's like me and likes to make sure an app will be there when he needs and not have to worry on if he can download it or has the time. But if he's like my roommate who doesn't like keeping apps he doesn't use all that often, he won't need to worry about that).

Really all I was trying to do was get the OP to see the ways he might use the phone that he didn't consider before (since all he has experienced is the Palm Pre and with all the iPhone can do he may not realize how much storage he needs. That doesn't mean I'm saying he should get the 64 GB though, only to get him to think "outside the box" since I feel he may find he's using his phone for a lot more than he used his Pre for).

Because iTunes Match is NOT the same as iTunes cloud. It is a hybrid streaming/downloading service. Yes it will take up space, but not as much as downloading and storing your songs. At least that's how I read it.

I'm pretty sure it's a synching service, just like itunes cloud except that you can put your own songs on there (and if it already has those songs in itunes, it just lets you download the itunes equivalant on all your devices). Apple has already denied a rumor that it was synching as well (whether the rumor is true or not) so that to me says that Apple does not intend it at least to be a streaming service and if some how you can do some sort of streaming it is a side affect of how they decide to implement it.

I always recommend going the biggest to people.

Whether it is games, videos, or pictures....you never know what you may like or add on the phone.

I have grandmas and other family members who use nothing whatsoever then do some videos or whatever and suddenly find themselves using GB's.

I wanted the 16 but they ran out of it at the store. Got the 32 and tbh I don't regret it. Looking back now,i can keep all 8gb of music on my phone and if I choose put a few movies for the gym without having to constantly be moving stuff back and forth. Also, apps do take space so you never know. I like having the extra room just in case I ever need it. Also the re sale value of the phone is a bit higher since I will prob end up getting the new iPhone next year..I know ima tech junkie but i love having the newest lol.

16GB fits me fine, BUT... I tend to take lots of family pictures and photos, so I want some breathing room for those and my media. So, 32GB is perfect for me. Now, 64GB will be awesome to have but I don't think its worth the $ right now.

Well, I plan to take a lot of video with it, but I won't keep all of it on the phone. I'll store it on my external hard drive and use with my computer's iMovie.

But I am wondering how much I can actually store on a 16 Gb phone. For instance, if I have a fair amount of photos which I leave on the phone, plus some basic apps (no games), how many minutes (or hours) worth of the HD video can I expect that phone to hold?

From what I understand iTunes Match does save space because while it does uses storage on your device cache, it deletes some storage as you continue to listen to music and when storage gets low. Im not completely sure but someone correct me if im wrong

Thank you! That is very helpful.

I'm thinking I can manage just fine with the 16 GB now.

Much appreciated!
