I suspect this will be the last introduction of a MacBook with an Intel CPU. Starting March or June next year will have MacBook Air with ARM, then Mac mini, then iMac, then MacBook Pros. The previous transition (PPC to X86) was very quick. Less than 18 months. They'll have to do the same thing this time again to be coherent.

I certainly hope not. And if so, I hope it comes with a robust x86 and x64 emulator.

Don't even know why I'm anticipating this, it's going to be such a waste of money for someone who just wants a 15" MBA with a good keyboard. I usually don't feel the need to justify a purchase - wanting to upgrade to it from a 4 year old MBP is usually enough for me but spending probably £2-4,000 over the odds vs say the new Surface laptop 15 is just such an incredible waste of money I don't think I can just treat myself to it on this one 😅

I'm inclined to agree, they're not likely to want a long drawn out transition splitting developer attention between supporting two versions of apps, I expect once the transition begins Mac customer and developer alike will, seeing which way the wind is blowing, rapidly hop on board the new platform.

I wouldn't even be all that surprised if this were to be the debut ARM Mac, Apple showcasing their own silicon as a powerful option ("x times faster than the 2019 MacBook Pro") to stop it being pigeonholed as a low power and low performance option. Microsoft have just effectively done that with the Surface Pro X, bringing it out confidently as the shiny new premium option that everyone's interested in, not having it as a timid secondary option that's almost immediately forgotten as less impressive even before any potential compatibility issues, like with the Surface RT models in the past.

This is very un-green of Apple. I can’t think of many laptops drawing 96W. What the **** are they thinking?

It is quite feasible Apple with run Arm and Intel together then transition gradually to Arm when software catches up.

Question is why would they need to increase power to 96W. I don't think its a CPU so that would leave the GPU requirements. Im not into the mobile GPUs but Im not aware of any GPU better than Vega 20 that would fit MBP. Anyone?

The 16" display may also require more power. In addition, improved cooling could allow the device to remain in a high-power state for longer, which could necessitate a larger power supply in order for the battery to be able to charge (or even not discharge) during that high-power state.

Also, in AMD's latest earnings call the CEO mentioned they have 7nm mobile versions of Navi coming. There was no timeline except "in the coming quarters." If we are very lucky maybe the 16" will launch with a 7nm Navi GPU (although if I were a betting man I'd expect to not see a mobile Navi until next year, sadly).

I see a possible plan here: Make all the x86-macs so expensive it's out of reach for most people and focus on making iPadOS and iPads the go-to-solution for the masses.
Replacing the "cheap" 15" with a really high end 16" starting at $3999 perhaps with Xeon CPU (Xeon-D is possible) could be the next step.

I doubt the starting price is a penny over $2999. Maybe even less.
Yep. I'm guessing a new 16-incher starts at $2999 with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage. Upgrade to 32 GB at $3399.

If such an ARM Mac required a 96 Watt power adapter, I would be disappointed.

My guess this is an Intel Mac with new form factor.

He talks about macbook pro with Xdr display...And he is right...a second tb3 would be nice for those who use that display with the 16" MBP
It'd be nice perhaps, but given that the MacBook Pro will have 3 other TB3 ports, it's not really necessary. That MBP would likely be sitting on the same desk anyway.

Thinner bezels, scissor keyboard....but what new design? They’ve looked the same for several years now. What can they do? Make it a triangle?

Remove the gimmicky touch bar and return the Function keys to their rightful place.

Perhaps Apple will take a cue from Microsoft and use AMD for its high end offering.... Nah, that would take too much ‘courage.’

.....

Ha, I'm thinking they'll offer a $500 protective case. Made of titanium. 🤪

Nah, just declare you Apple Card stolen a bunch of time, then use duct tape and voilà!

Ok, so find at "top of the line" laptop for $3k. And here come the compromises...
Depends on what you're looking for/ how Apple specs this. If it features a Xeon, ECC memory, SLC SSD, ultra colour accurate P3 XDR display and half decent graphics, then maybe you'd be pushed to find anything at the $3k mark. If it's an existing 15" pro with a new slim bezel screen, there's very competitive alternatives below $2k.

Honestly it probably will still be an Intel Machine, could just have monster graphics though (mobile RTX chips can still draw over 100W by themselves for example).

Looking at the photo of the back of the display, what’s with that Mickey Mouse shaped AC adapter plug? Why not use the standard AC adapter plug that everyone has used forever?
