If Apple could manage to release the new 16" MacBook Pro at the same price level as current one (the already increased the price in the past too much) it could become an interesting device if it has:
  • better Keyboard without the stupid and expensive touchbar
  • Touchpad with Apple Pencil 2 support
  • SD-Card Slot (I'm ok with missing USB-A, but having no SD-Card-Slot on the go is a No-Go for photographers)
  • More Storage in Base-Configuration (256 GB is a joke) and cheaper Upgrade-Options that are more in line with marketprices for Highend-SSDs
  • effective cooling instead of making it 0.1mm thinner
  • BTO option for a cellular LTE modem
  • improved Quality Control
That would be something that I call a PRO Macbook.

OK let's rewind to 2012. They introduced the 15" Retina alongside the existing MBP range as a "flagship" model. The 13" followed later.

They're not going to add Mag Safe and Ports back, that ship has sailed.

I think this 16.5" will sit alongside the existing models as a new "Flagship" that will take over the range by 2020. Likely it has no keyboard but instead utilises touch and haptic feedback. Virtually no bezel and is 16.5" in a 15-inch body.

I do miss MagSafe, painfully much. I've been using the 15" TB MBP for the last two years for work, and whenever I'm at home I default to my 2015 MBP or my iPad because they're just more pleasant to use (largely thanks to MagSafe).

There's no chance in hell they're reversing it IMHO. Not only Apple is too arrogant to admit mistakes, their guiding principle post Jobs is unilateral reductiveness and overconfidence that the user will adapt to their designs instead of designing to adapt to user habits.
It was such a brilliant and beloved innovation, and truly gave them a huge USP ( unique selling proposition) over all other laptops.

I think they missed the boat by never coming out with a really clever commercial that showed a montage with laptops of all shapes and sizes crashing to the floor after their cords were kicked, with some tragic punk song behind it, and then show a MacBook MagSafe cord being kicked out and then... blissful silence.

Why do you all set yourselves up for disappointment by clamouring for features you know very well are not going to materialise?

Yeap, if we are very very very very lucky, it will have a new keyboard design that doesn’t break so easily.

Otherwise it’ll have four or five USBC TB3 ports, and have the OLED Touch Bar, look the same as the current models. Oh and it’ll be super thin too so it has no room for any other ports bar USBC. But Apple will be more then happy to sell you a single or four.

It will probably thermal throttle still too, but Apples laptops do it a lot less then some other PC ones do, Apple will offer the same power on battery as it does on mains, some PCs reduce the power automatically when in battery.

Knowing modern Apple they have a long term goal for the touch bar. This is only the first iteration. I would guess it is full touch keyboard/interface with haptic that changes depending what you are doing, in line with the recent rumours we have been hearing.

We may see Apple make a concession by including an SD card slot. Or maybe not.

We might see it adopt some more design cues from the iPad as well. I doubt we will see Face ID (screen just isn’t thick enough).

Everything else likely shouldn’t change too much from the current MBP design. I don’t really see Apple walking back on their current design choices. Love it or hate it, it’s here to stay.

No way this is going to happen. Apple spent millions to develop the current Macbook Pro - for them to abandon it after barely 2.5 year run (late 2016-mid 2019) is to lose tons of profit. They'll never go for it. The 32GB option on current 13in machines is feasible though. Hope it happens.

They have to know they made a lot of mistakes with current design. I also think we will see redesign in 2020, because you know "it's Apple". But having 4 generations of flawed keyboard design will became a problem in next few years:

The replacement program "covers eligible MacBook and MacBook Pro models for four years after the first retail sale of the unit.", so for 2016 MBP program will end in October 2020 – and that's next year! And after that? The keyboard is still bad and the main problem is not dust, but the heat. What about the value of those MBP? I can't imagine what is gonna happen to those computers, I guess most of them will be thrown away... which is really eco-friendly, isn't it?!

They should really focus on those problems before they became mainstream problems. It will catch them sooner or later. It's like with AirPods. The only real problem is the battery. Bluetooth headphones longevity is about 2-3 years. But the usability could be much longer. So when you buy bluetooth headphones, you have to count with it. So for first 2 years it's an amazing product, but wait another year and you will see tons of angry people having to buy new (more expensive) AirPods. Some of the over-ear headphones have at least an option to connect them via 3.5mm jack (Marshall / B&W PX), but when the battery dies in AirPods, you have to throw them away. Apple of course wants you to buy new ones, but the legislation should force manufacturers to make their products more repairable. I'm not some kind of environmental activist, but I found it quite stupid to produce non-repairable products.

The MBP USBC charger is what, 62 watts? I simply find it cumbersome compared to MagSafe. With MagSafe you didn't worry about flying laptops or snapped connections. You do with USBC.

Who knows, maybe they were working on a new MagSafe charger that could offer more power but had to use USBC.

Don't know how long you've bought Apple, but it's exactly why the brought out MagSafe. Their older laptops used a unique styled plug that was sturdier than what PCs were using at the time and probably now, too. The problem was that accidents happened and those plugs would become deformed and or cause chassis problems. I have no idea why Apple got rid of the MagSafe. It was the dumbest reason unless they couldn't make the module fit in the current MBP body or couldn't make a more powerful version.

Please let this rumor be true! No way I could live without my 17". Hopefully Apple won't price the new models exorbitantly ... otherwise I would be force to move to another platform.

to be honest i would love to keep the same bezels and make it a little bit bigger and have even better thermals for the cpu and vega gpu inside

and don't forget the Firewire 400/800 port, CD/DVD, the Floppy Drive and a 56k modem, I would also like a clear cover that slides off and has some cool custom patterns I can put under it like my PowerBook 1400 has!

Oh wait I can do almost all of that if needed with 4 TB3 ports and whatever additions (dongles or hubs) I choose. I can also drive 4 displays (I currently run 5 with MacPro).
No SCSI, No ADB ports, no sale.

Its amazing how Apple just doesn't get it. Consumers are begging for these features and they don't put them in.

What is the reason for disrespecting your consumer like that?

Because they want everybody "all-aboard the iToy-train". The Mac is the underachieving sibling (in terms of market share), so Cook doesn't like it. So they've been working diligently to make the iToys look more attractive than the Mac.

It is the only plausible reason as to why the Mac and macOS have been so lacklustre during the Cook era. Let's see if this year can prove me wrong.
That said, it will take more than a single shiny 16" MBP or modular Mac Pro release to convince me. What's important here is support. A road-map for the next 5-8+ years where we see adequate updates to the hardware as and when new cutting-edge components hit the market. Increased development of macOS that's aimed at pro/power features and not just chopping it down and repainting it to match iOS. Apple will have to work hard and actively show ongoing support for the power users to convince me that they care. They can't treat it as an afterthought, otherwise this will just be another 1 in 3,4,5-6 year update.

I have owned Macs since they first came out, and am aware of why they came out with MagSafe. Not sure what made you think I didn’t.

Great feature. Badly missed.

Huge mountain of Salt.

I dont really get excited, problems with the recent releases means being an early adopter is not the most sensible thing.

Step number 1: complain about lack of Mac updates.
Step number 2: complain about the price.
Step number 3: repeat.

I still remember the time I payed $2000 for my 17"MBP.
I don't see that happening now.
Adjust for inflation.

It can start at $4000 for all that matters; it should have MagSafe, SD-card slot, 2 USB type A housing for the USB-C ports, two regular full featured USB-C ports, HDMI and an audio-jack.

And, no bloody Touch Bar!

You have forgotten to mention to back to the " old " keyboard!
