I also want an iPad for a specific purpose. I don't want a Mac, I have one already.

I travel for long periods of time mainly in Europe. I don't like to pay an extra fee for WiFi at a hotel. Even the smallest computer gets heavy and heavier as you travel. A netbook is out of the question for me. I am working on a travel guide, I need to jot down facts as I go. I need to stash pictures of hotel rooms, sites, etc in one place and make some sense out of my research. I have been looking for something like this for the past five years.

I am not a geek or an elderly person (at least not yet), I am sure there are plenty of other people that can put an iPad to use with a specific purpose. If it is convenient, mobile and reliable, I want it.

I dont know why people make this so hard...Just get the wifi and tether to your phone....Thats what I plan on doing. I tether my laptop all the time for downloads and surfing in a pinch. No way giving At&t more for an additional 3g service. I have watched streaming movies over my laptop using my iphone so no worries on this end. Seems like no brainer

as much as i agree once att activates tethering it wont be free. aka you will be paying a hellalot anyway.

a small note people are forgetting....

movies formatted for 1024 resolution will be, maybe, 3 times the size of current movies for the iphone.
so my 5thElement m4a is 550MB....i'm thinking the same thing at higher res has gotta be 1.6GB....

just food for thought!

If ATT doesn't know whether someone's tethering now, how can they charge more when they officially allows it? Based on the discussions of this forum, it seems like if you tether with programs like MiWi, ATT won't be able to tell?

I waffled constantly back and forth on how much memory to get. I've finally decided to go with 64GB because of three things:

1. dedicated ipad apps might be bigger down the road

2. movies will be about 3 times as big (storage wise) as the iphone movies

3. I'm going to be putting some seriously high rez pictures on this thing and a lot of them. I plan to take full advantage of the digital picture frame feature when docked.

What is the point doing high resolution when you are limited at 1024x1024? Even if you have high res images, it likely will be downgraded to 1024x1024. File size is not that much. To fill 64gb, somebody do the math, but you will need a gazillion pictures dude.

How many of these pictures would I need if I also put:

1. a bunch of 3 gb movies on there?
2. a library of songs
3. a bunch of iphone apps
4. a bunch of ipad dedicated apps
5. a bunch of ebooks
6. some games
7. a bunch of ipad designed magazine subscriptions
8. and my library of pictures

?

If someone is using MyFi from the Cydia store on a JB phone, AT&T's decision to allow or not allow tether doesn't effect a JB iPhone user. They can activate the "legal" tethering option, but doesn't mean you can only use their means. The hacking community will clearly just continue on using their JB iPhones and programs.

i know. i been jb for ever and been tethering since the 3.0 betas:p

just that when the legal way is enabled they can find you. tho there will prob be hacks to get around that:rolleyes:

I'll take the low end model, like i did when the iPod Touch came out, if i love it i will buy the 3rd Gen iPad with the max storage once it's out, i usually buy these things for 2 gens

My iPhone is 16Gb, and I'm using roughly half of it with all of my music, podcasts, and apps. I figure 32Gb will be fine for movies, books, and documents

Guess I had to finally make a decision... 16 GB has been pre-ordered.

Price over function for now, if I need more space sell the iPad and upgrade?

Anyone else thinking about dropping AT&T for Verizon now that you'll have a giant iPhone?

Only 16GB for me

I will be docking every 10 hours so there will be no need for me to have 1 years :D worth of storage. I will watch a movie on the iPad, dock to the desktop/iTunes and get another, ect, ect. You are a big time user if you use 64GB every 10 hours. :D

Step out the box. Your "big time user" quirk is narrow-minded at best. Not everyone syncs in the CPU room an walks into the living room to watch a movie. Not everyone has a laptop and an ipad.

Try that logic when you are across the water in Italy and your computer is at home.

Just depends. For me, I don't have my music on my Ipad. I figure I'll always have my Iphone around so if I want music I can use that. That alone will save you a lot of space.

Nobody can answer for you. The main factors as I see them are:

1 - do you plan to put your entire iTunes library on the iPad, or will you use other devices for that?
2 - if yes to #1, how big is your iTunes library?
3 - do you plan to load a bunch of movies on the iPad or will you mostly rely on streaming when/if you want to use it to watch movies?

Aside from music and movies, the 16gb is a no-brainer.

If you'll mostly use your iPod or whatever for music, then music is a minor factor at most for your iPad. I put 900 songs on mine "just in case" and they take about 2 or 3 gb.

If you'll mostly use Netflix or other streaming methods for movies, or if you don't plan to watch movies on the iPad anyway, then video becomes mostly a non-issue.

I'm the type who usually maxes out capacity on devices I buy and rarely regret it, but with the iPad, I think 16gb would be enough for me, so I didn't want to pay $200 extra "just in case." I did go up to 32gb in case my needs evolve. So far, I'm using 10gb, which will continue to go up a bit over time as I add apps and pictures, but probably not drastically.

I went with the 32GB model. It is working out perfectly.
I have 54 applications, 300 tracks of music, 1000 photos, 5 full-length movies, 5 1-hour TV show episodes, 1 1/2 hour TV show episode, 2 dozen ebooks, a half-dozen pages documents, a few video-laden keynote presentations, and assorted notes. 19GB free.

My media collection weighs in at a total of over 2TB so I have plenty of experience of optimizing my selection of media. :)

You are right. The 16GB iPad would be ideal for the ones who sync at charge time.
