With everything stored on iCloud, 16gb is just fine. We don't all watch movies and play games, you know.

I find 16 GB to be too small on my phone, especially now with HD video. On the iPad where I will put movies and much bigger files, 16GB is way too small. I'm not sure why you would complain if they replaced the 32GB for the 16GB either way though, even if you do think 16GB is enough....

I would rather have $100 in my pocket than 32GB in my iPad. Replacing the 16GB with a $499 32GB model is fine, but I think the point is that it would be nice to have an even cheaper entry-level option for those who can live with 16GB.

i really think that the hard drives need to go up in capacity. my 16gb iPad was getting so full. and thats not even putting shows, music, or movies on it either. the size of those textbooks are huge and adding in various apps, and games, and documents just starts to fill it up too fast for my liking. also more RAM is a must.

I see little reason for so much memory on the iPad as Apple does not let me store what I really want and that is files of MY choosing. Until they allow me to set up folders and store Office files, more memory is a waste! I am only using a fraction of my 64gb now. I have more software than I can use now and over 3000 images.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I've been using Readdle Docs as a file manager for about a year now and really like it.

I have the 16gb, and don't mind not having that much space. It has all that I need on it, and a couple of movies and some songs, not overdoing it.. I will be getting the 16gb iPad 3 if they make it.

I agree. They did this with the iPod Touch 4G where the 16GB was dropped and replaced with the 32GB. I have a feeling they will replace the 64 with 128, 32 with 64, 16 with 32 while maintaining similar prices.

It seems like a logical next step for Apple.

16GB has always seemed so small. One iTunes HD movie is over 4GB on average. A TV episode is roughly 2GB. And apps like Infinity Blade are over 1GB.

My 64GB iPad is usually very full, I could see myself using a 128GB model.

if the rumors are true and if the iPad 3 has a resolution of 2048x1536 then its most likely that the base model will be a 32 gb. Think about it, all the graphics will need to be doubled in size as well as ALL the app that you will be using...

For everyone who is saying they would rather keep the extra 100 box then get a 32 gig, No one is saying its going to be 100 box more.

i do think that the 16gb iPad 2 will drop 100 box, however the 32gb iPad 3 will come in at the same 499 price point (as the current get 16 gb)

- $199 iPad 2 - 8 GB
- $299 iPad 2 - 16 GB
- $399 iPad 3 - 32 GB
- $599 iPad 3 - 64 GB
- $699 iPad 3 - 128 GB WiFi + LTE
- $749 iPad 3 - 256 GB WiFi + LTE

yeah right... lol

No chance at all...I still think the 16GB will be dropped...remember that the new 3 (if rumours are correct) is going to be capable of higher definition and hence file sizes will increase.

16GB just isn't going to go far with that in mind. I can see the point others have made here, that not everyone fills their iPads with large video files and huge iTunes library content, but more do than don't.

Base model 32, then 64, and probably a 128. I have managed to use 43Gb on my 64Gb wifi ipad2, and am starting to be selective about what I put on it now.

A 128GB model would be great for me, And many others, but a 32GB starting point makes sense. The pricing should reflect that though.

It won't be long before we know!

If I removed the 6 movies from my wifes 32GB ipad she would have roughly 23.5Gb if free space.
I think the 16Gb would be a great seller at $399, as we have seen at the TJMaxx secret sales. Better yet $450 for a 3G 16GB.
If schools are going to be moving their text books onto and issuing ipads, some attractive pricepoint needs to be availalbe..
Apple is already stripping down imacs and airs for education, though the savings are breathtaking.
Something tells me Apple is keeping a very close eye on how much space ipad users consuming and making products to fit.
Now if the line up was 32, 64, 126 GB with the same price points well maybe the 16GB would be obsolete.
Right now apple seems to be able to sell milk to a dairy farmer so whatever they put on the shelves, it will most likely sell.
Keep the 16Gb, put a $399 price tag on it and watch how many kids sudden have an ipad or how many homes become multi ipad homes.

Textbooks take up a huge amount of space. There's no way apple will drop entry model to $399 and I don't blame them. The 16g will become obsolete bc all apps and everything else continues to increase in size eg- HD movies, larger camera pixels etc.

If anything they should remove the 16gb, and put in a 8gb model. Think about it, it would save on cost, and because most people stream content now a days I don't think it is necessary to have all that space on an iPad. I'm not sure about everyone else, but the only things that take up space on my iPad is apps, because I have a phone and iPod touch for music, and I keep all of my photos on box.net (because I have 50 free gb and I can keep my Dropbox space for school). My videos I rent from the iTunes store, and everything else is done online. Just my thoughts :)

^ disagree. 8Gb is way too small even if you just put apps on it. esp. with some apps these days topping > 1Gb. 16Gb is enough for most people I think though and as you said, for those that mostly stream things.

16 GB is more than enough for me.

Music in the cloud.
Only photo's on it are in Photo Stream.

Don't really play games, except for some puzzle ones like Cut the Rope.

Only video I watch on the device is through apps like iPlayer, 4OD and Sky Go.

If I ever go away for the night where I won't have WiFi, I usually rent a movie before going.

I usually have about 8 or 9 GB of free space.

Ipads and iphones are already becoming quite mainstream in my country anyways, what with telcos heavily subsidising their prices. Heck, I am a teacher, and it seems that every other person in my school has an iphone, and several own an ipad.

While some have good ideas, I disagree the 16GB model should be removed. I have a 16GB iPad 2 and it's perfect for me. I only store a few movies on there. I primarily use the Netflix and HBOGO apps to watch TV shows and/or movies.

My iPhone I use to store the majority of my content (ie. music) so I'd rather shell out the extra money for a 64GB iPhone than the iPad.

I think there are plenty of customers for which 16GB is plenty (even more than is needed), so killing off the 16GB variant is completely unwarranted IMHO. My wife for example has an iPad 2 but uses it almost exclusively for web browsing and videos (youtube or other sites). She has no need for most of the 16GB on her system, so shy in the world would she need more? I believe there are plenty of users that have the iPad for one or a few very specific uses like this. Instead of killing the 16GB variant just lower the price and slot in a 128GB variant for those that need it.

Agreed

To further iPads objective in becoming a replacment for a laptop (for a typical consumer) I think with the iPad 3 they should remove the 16GB model and move the 32GB model down to that $499 price, and therefore move the 64GB down to the price of the current 32GB. Effectively moving the whole range down to the lower price, and then introduce a 128GB for the same price of the current 64GB. With the ever increasing size of apps (and if we really want app developers to develop large games for iPad) this needs to be done. With Apples push into the textbook market - and each textbook weighing in at nearly 2GB (Life on Earth for example weighing in at 965MB for the first two CHAPTERS) - this really needs to be done. And with the advent of much higher resolution graphics if the retina display arrives, the iPad will be storing potentially higher resolution graphics and video. 16GB isn't enough now even for the lowest priced model. Thoughts?

Well said! Completely agree.

Seeing as for the 64GB model apple uses two 32 GB modules, perhaps instead of 128, the '64 replacement' should be 96GB?

What a waste of an iPad.:p

Quite the opposite! I'm a musician and carry 1200 jazz tunes on my iPad. In addition, I have about 100gb of music stored on iTunes Match. I read a lot and browse a lot and that doesn't take up much space. I have about two games and no movies, and I definitely believe I'm getting a lot more out of my iPad than most people ;-)

The vision for the future is people either having their own server at home/work or paying a company for the use of their server equipment. As internet bandwidth pipelines keep widening things will remotely go on and come off a server so quickly that even the notion of running apps locally on the device will diminish. Based on all the writing that's on the wall by now I'm confused as to why there's even so much fuss over the computing capabilities of these devices, let alone how much storage they have built in. Storage and CPU implements are the things that will keep iPads more expensive than we all want them to be, so the sooner this transition sets in the better as far as I'm concerned.

My 16GB is plenty for me. I have no need for textbooks and keep just a few movies on there for the occasional flight. eBooks take next to nothing. Apps are the biggest consumer of space, and with 60 apps, I've still got room to spare. Keep the 16GB as a low-cost option.
