ces this year had ultra books at the forefront. what is the future of large notebooks?

Well considering they all have macbook air equivalent specs they aren't exactly made for pro users. Try editing 1080p on a MBA...lol. There isn't and ultra book made for pro users yet so at this point a 17" still has a decent future.

I don't know what's bigger, my ego or the 17" pro! Either way, I've got a huge ego and only the 17" pro could come close to satisfying it :D. Of course my ego demands the upgraded CPU, 16 gigs of ram, and a 512gb SSD and 2 thunderbolt displays! It feels great, absolutely no regrets. I've now got a mobile command center.

I find my laptop screen size correlates with my grades, when I had a 13" MacBook, I was a C student. After changing to a 17" pro, I'm now an A student!
Can't believe I spent all those years trying to contain my ego!!!

Is it true that the 17" runs cooler for long periods due to better ventilation/fans than the 15"?

That is correct. This is significant when playing games. The 13 used to actually shut off if it overheated while it was on my lap or on my bed. Never with the 17.

The 17" might have a niche market, but some of us like our real estate on the road. Personally I work out of coffee shops as a freelance graphic artist, the 17" is perfect for me. Hopefully 2012 brings 4 ram slots w/o a ODD.

Love my 17"!

I've had two 17" PowerBook G4s and two 17" MacBook Pros. I really love the extra screen real estate when traveling. To me, that's well worth the extra weight.

It fits well at the bottom of a regular roller carry-on. Using it on airplanes in coach can sometimes be quite cramped, but is definitely doable. The only real downside when traveling is that it won't fit in many hotel room safes.

However, I personally liked the 1680x1050 resolution better that the newer 1920x1080. I wish they would offer that again. 1680x1050 on a 17" is plenty high resolution at 117 PPI. The Thunderbolt display is only 109 PPI and 1920x1080 is as high as 132 PPI. That can very straining on older people's eyes.

No compromise!

I've used 11, 13, 15 and 17" Mac's.

My favorites are the 17" MBP and 11" Air. Reason being (for my needs) they're both the best 'no compromise' solutions.

The 11" is the best in portability, no question, meets my needs perfectly for travel or even working from the couch.

The 17" is best for (mobile) screen real estate and power which I need when working at our offices and home office. So I bought both.

In my experience the 13" and 15" are compromise notebooks .... neither the best in portability or screen real estate.

I do Industrial Design and Concept Prototyping for a living, long long hours on computers 7 days a week, it's easy to warrant owning both, they get used heavily.

bought my first mac computer in 2004, a powerbook 17inch still using it as i type this and still my only computer. its all iv ever known so the 15 inch looks small to me anytime i see one.but i probably will be switching to a smaller macbook pro when they get rid of the optical drive since i wont be able to afford the 17

So you finally got the 17, then? They're great.

And I completely agree about 11" + 17", it's the perfect combination!

Facts:

The majority of citizens are not overly wealthy.

AND

The majority of voters in the poll said it was too big.

Put two and two together.

If 390 people said it is NOT too big, what is the deal with these other 450 people? Doesn't it add up? That their motivation is most likely financial? This laptop is not for everybody --but not because you wouldn't want it if you could have it.

A lot of times when I show girls my 17 incher they mention that they've never really seen anybody own one this size.

Lets be real here... its a $2500 laptop....

maybe some day i'll be able to afford that big bad 17" :( until then, living in the abject poverty i do, i'll just have to scrape by w/ the 15"

No way, the 17 is too big.

Or

No way the 17 is too big.

?

Now that doesn't make any sense. He asked if it's too big. "No way, it's too big" only makes sense if he wasn't asking if it wasn't too big.

Of course this whole thing is silly because why would anyone make anything that's too big?
"Yes it's too large to be of any use, but we are just into this big thing".

I don't know how you've gathered he was asking a question as there's no question mark. As far as it's possible to tell, he may have been stating his opinion, so what I've said makes perfect sense.

Actually, I kind of was hoping you were kidding :D
