They made a phone whereby when you pick it up, one's hand covered an antenna and the phone lost signal.

I think that's still the winner.
I remember the iPhone 4. That was a bad engineering decision, but you literally had to squeeze the phone tight (almost on purpose) in a specific small area. When that happened you usually lost a bar.

Taken my 17 Pro Orange back already and keeping the black 16 Pro

I'm gutted really as love the Orange and feel of the 17. Its one gram heavier and 0.5 mm thicker but feels way lighter and thinner that my 16 but end of the day the 48MP camera, 8 X and front camera isn't worth the risk of a phone which might look worn out in one year as I never use a case
I’m in exactly the same bucket as you and have decided the same.

I’ve already taken some great photos with the new tele, which I will miss, but I’m not paying thousands of dollars for a phone that feels cheap, even chintzy.

$29 with AppleCare+ on my 15 pro max.

Had the back glass changed last week and the phone looks brand new.
That doesn't mean they didn't give you a whole new phone, or refurbished, and charged you $29. Depending on the model thats exactly what they do.

Apparently this is happening to many people

Apple made the iPhone 17 air undestructible meanwhile the 17 pro the wind will break it in half 🤣 spend more get less
Not true. The Pro holds up much better to drops and bangs on the front and back for both drops and hammer tests. The edges however do not, they deform and chip fairly easily, but the glass survives. The Air, holds up better on the edge, but the back glass and screen shatter with quite a bit less effort than the pro.

I wouldn't use either without a case. They are too expensive.

I'd love a very thin Ti alloy bumper case, and I think the orange with some finish wear, a nice patina would look great.

Excellent point. I made this point in another thread. I think Apple has begun to place their priorities when it comes to durability in protecting the glass/screen from breaking and not so much the edges or sides of the phone from small dings and scratches.

I am not saying it's not a big deal that the iPhone 17 Pro scratches more easily than previous models, but the fact that it can take a huge drop and not have the screen shatter (in most cases) is probably the outcome that Apple was aiming for. You can still use your iPhone if the back or edges have some scratches and small dings, but most of us cannot use our iPhones when the screen shatters or cracks, or at least not to the same degree of satisfaction.

Again putting the iPhone 17 Pro in a case is going to almost completely mitigate the dings, scratches and the paint chipping problem, while the new design of the 17 Pro will make the screen much less susceptible to damage from a drop. I think for the overwhelming vast majority of owners that will be considered a win-win.

I could care less about youtubers - hammering, cutting with a knife, dropping from the Empire State Building, launching it out of a cannon, taking a flame thrower to it....quick break sponsored by (extremeflameproofcase.com), running it over with a Zamboni, mafia hit squad, or shooting it with a 120mm smooth bore sabot round. If I put it in my pocket and it comes out missing paint, which it does, then thats a deal breaker for me,

I already knew I made the right decision going with the Air. And this confirmed it.

Why do you need someone to confirm your decision making. I have the pro Max and love it. I popped a case on it like I do any other iphone I have owned. By the way you do know the Air Scratches as well.

You guys spend more time looking at the back of your phones than the front absolutely kill me

They don’t, a lot of them are justifying there Air purchases. Well they are in great company, well maybe not so much since I can still pick up the air 2 days after it went on sale to the public.

This logic makes no sense to me. A phone is a tool, but I do agree we want to keep it as nice as possible. That said, it’s not jewelry and phones depreciate quickly unlike a luxury watch for example.

You are both willing to give up 15% speed (up to 35-40% GPU), less RAM, worse cameras, better cooling, and less battery life because the phone might get a few superficial nicks on it after a year of use? And since you both had the 16 Pro - it seems like you may upgrade annually.

I’d get AppleCare+ if you are worried about cosmetic damage that doesn’t impact the usage of the phone at all.

AppleCare+ doesn’t cover this tho.

The only time I use my phones with a case is while I'm at work.

I dropped my Samsung Flip 6 without. case twice and no issues.

My 17PM Cosmic Orange 256GB ETA is October 5. Let's see how, where this goes.

For me, the internal compute upgrades have zero value - CPUs, GPUs and RAM are at such a level that adding more adds nothing to what I use a phone for. (I do have an M2 Max studio at home and an M4 Max MBP for more compute intensive stuff.)

I’m Australian, and we still have the sim slot, so no upgraded battery for me.

So the aesthetics matter, because apart from the Tele it’s the major reason to upgrade from a 16 Pro and, as explained, they just aren’t there. It’s not just the chipping, I didn’t like the orange colour either. What is deep and lustrous in renders is thin and unimpressive in hand - it actually reminds me of the iPod Mini finishes more than anything.

In isolation, of course I’d keep the 17 Pro, it’s the better phone. But not at a cost of $2,500 Australian dollars. And that’s the rub of it really. I can afford to upgrade, but I want value for money and don’t feel I’m getting it this year, for the first year in a long time (the XS was a dud too IMHO).

I respectfully disagree especially with the extra RAM. 12GB should help a lot with minimizing reloading. Liquid Glass is slowing down my 16 Pro so I’m looking forward to faster processors too. I do appreciate your position, but life’s too short (if you have the money and you seem to have it) Might as well get some quality of life upgrades including major camera advances in the 2nd and 3rd lenses.

I love my 17 Pro and think it might be one of the largest year over year upgrades in a long time (I upgrade every year even during some of the minor years lol)
